Plattsburg Public School Newsletter

June 2021, Term 2 Week 10

Principal's Message

The end of Term 2 is upon us, and what a great first half of the year we have had.  Our students have made great academic, social and sporting gains this Semester.  As a school, we measure students' academic achievement frequently and report to parents and carers formally twice a year. Semester 1 reports will be available in the parent portal at the end of Week 1 of Term 3, allowing teachers to report on all of Term 1 and 2 content.  Whilst these reports are a great round up of how students are progressing academically and socially across the semester it is important to celebrate the great gains our students make each day - learning a new timestable, taking on leadership roles, making a new friend, climbing a little higher on the monkey bars, improving their attendance.  Our students make leaps each day that seem small when viewed in isolation, but build to create the great young people they grow into. Our students work hard each day on these challenges, with support from parents, carers and teachers.  Each of our students (and their families and teachers) should be proud of the great progress they have made in Semester 1.

This week we bid farewell to Miss Blumer, who heads off on a snowy adventure. Those students and parents who have had the opportunity to get to know Miss Blumer during her time with us will agree that she has been a great asset to Plattsburg, and not just for her dazzling handball skills but her focus on helping students achieve their best and get involved in all of our activities.  Miss Bec will teach 2/3B for the remainder of the school year. Plattsburg will welcome Miss Sam as our BD support class teacher. I know our Plattsburg community will make her welcome.

This week we also farewell our School Admin Manager, Mrs Bridge.  Mrs Bridge has been a valuable part of our school over the past 12 years, working to ensure the best possible outcomes for Plattsburg students and supporting staff with her outstanding knowledge of school finance.  We wish Mrs Bridge all the very best. Mrs Hoare will join us as Relieving SAM for the remainder of the year.

We also welcome Mrs Bax back to Plattsburg PS at the start of Term 3.  I'm sure there will be a very excited student population ready to welcome her back on the first day of next term.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday. Students return on Tuesday 13th July.

And in STEM news...

KC is powering along with their coding. On Monday, they were using their iPads to help Rey direct BB8 to pick up all the scrap metal. Most students were able to make it through ALL 12 LEVELS!! Great algorithms KC :)

STEMTASTIC fun in 5/6K

5/6K were some of the first students in the world to use LEGO Education SPIKE Prime. We are lucky enough to have the stem. T4L Inventor Robotics Kit and Virtual Reality Kit for next term. Students from 3-6 will be able to work as a team to build with SPIKE and code their creations. 5/6K students really enjoyed using the laptops, following steps and building with LEGO. We are looking forward to seeing what creations we can create next term!

Annual Junk Sculpture Competition

It is that time of year again - time to collect all your recyclable goods and turn them into a sculpture. The theme of this year’s Book Week is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds, so we are asking for the students to create a sculpture of something from another world.

Students are encouraged to collect and reuse household items such as boxes, tins, plastic bottles and egg cartons etc. Your sculpture needs to be completed and brought to school on Friday 23rd July (Term 3 Week 2)

Sculptures are to be taken directly to the school library between 8:30am - 8:50am on this day. Please note: sculptures will not be accepted before this date.

Please do not place your child's name on the sculpture to ensure objective judging.

Prizes: There will be a prize for the best infant (Years K-2) and primary (Years 3-6) sculptures.

Winners will be announced during Education/Book Week celebrations the following week (Term 3 Week 3). - Miss Cathcart

Alternatively, students can keep a list of books they have read over the past few months and hand these lists in to the library to be included on their Personal Reading Log.
