Community Positive Feedback

As a Principal it is always so special to receive emails and personally voiced accolades for our Miles State High students at both school and public events. Last week I received an email from Kylie Drury on behalf of the Murilla Garden Group. I directly quote We really appreciated the students’ efforts with serving morning tea to all the people who attended the event. Many compliments were received for the professional and caring way these terrific young people interacted with the crowd and for all the help they gave on the day! Well done Miles State High School!”  Thank you Kylie and congratulations to those students…. This coupled with the many comments from our Miles SHS School Expo exhibitors of praise for all our students respect and maturity at the event.

I truly believe our students actions both in word and deed are the result of our parent/carers and wider communities’ commitment to developing our students’ social skills along with our staff and students enacting our school values. Together we are preparing our youth of today to take on their community citizenship for tomorrow.

Farewell to Staff

Farewell to Staff

Saying farewell to staff is always hard, this term we say farewell and best wishes to two members of our Miles Student Services Team. Our long-term School Based Nurse Bobbie Moore. Bobbie has been working in our Miles and district cluster of school for many years. Bobbie’s professionalism, knowledge and ongoing care of our students both individually, in class groups and with whole school health and wellbeing events will long be remembered.  Our Youth Pathways Coordinator Renee Cremer has also recently departed. Renee’s tireless work driving and supporting our students to move ahead with their future pathways in the areas work experience, school-based traineeships and our Year 10 vocational program. Renee has worked extensively expanding our community, business and industry partnerships which has provided many choices for our students in career training and placement along with curriculum enhancement in industry currency for our school programs. Bobbie and Renee, we wish you and your family well in your new endeavours.  You both will be missed. Please know our door is always open for you to return have a chat and share with us your new journeys.

Welcome to new staff

Welcome to our new School Based Nurse Alyssa Mirabito our school community is looking forward to working with you. We have advertised the Youth Pathways position and we look forward to an announcement in the near future.

Take care,

Josette Moffatt

School Based Health Nurse

Hello everyone and thank you all for the warm welcome to Miles State High School. My name is Alyssa Mirabito and I am your new School Based Youth Health Nurse.

I was born in Miles, later moving to Bowen then back to Miles to study Nursing in Toowoomba. I have been a Registered Nurse for the past five years. I have worked at Tara Health Service for 3 years and am currently working at Miles Health Service where I have been for almost 2 years.

Since my partner and I started a family I have developed a love for children that I never knew was possible.

I am so keen to be able to work with everyone at Miles State High School and I hope to make a positive impact on everyone’s lives in some way. I strive to promote positive health outcomes and provide the school community with access to appropriate health professionals.

Thanks, Alyssa.

From the Deputy Principal

Hi Everyone,

In the last newsletter I wrote about the importance of student attendance at school.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts that parents and carers make to ensure that their children attend school. We also acknowledge that parents and carers do their best to inform us when their child isn’t attending for a particular reason. Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed a number of new families to our school community so I thought it would be timely to provide a flowchart that shares the process for parents and carers when their child is absent from school or late to school.

Student Absences Procedures Flowchart

Road Safety

Reminder for students about Road Safety – to and from school.

Getting to and From School Safely

Parent and carers are encouraged to remind their children about the expected behaviours in terms of road safety and students getting to and from school.

·         Students are expected to walk on the footpath – not the road.

·         Students are expected to cross at designated crossing areas.

·         Students who scooter to school need to give way or make way for pedestrians if they are on the footpath.

·         Helmets are to be worn by students who ride bikes.

·         Students are strongly advised to wear a helmet when riding their scooter.

Thank you for reinforcing the general safety expectations with your children.

Cheers Kath Wenban

Allow others to teach and learn

As of Week 6 Term 2, our new banner can be found in each classroom displaying the expectation of our students in allowing others to teach and learn.  As part of Positive Behaviour, we illustrate the benefits of following our school expectations and the logical consequences when we don't.

A Big Night Out - P and C Social

Last Friday, the P&C and the school-based events committee put on a “Big Night Out” social. The “Big Night Out” was a huge success with over seventy students from year 7 to year 12 in attendance. A lot of dancing and fun was had throughout the night, with homemade pizzas cooked using the school’s pizza trailer, and a full canteen run by the P&C volunteers. On behalf of the School based events chair I would like to thank Telstra for donating the phone for the lucky door prize, Foodworks Miles for donating many prizes for the games played throughout the night and to the P&C for hiring the DJ. Finally, a special thanks to the volunteering members of the community who gave up their time to put on such a great night for the students of Miles State High School.
