Weekly Prayer Reflection

Compassion for Christmas.

Christmas is coming and the pressure is on…for us to come up with the perfect gift, meal, gesture and yes indeed, the perfect family. That’s what the ads are telling us…in your dreams, or rather your delusions. Let’s be honest, Christmas is a minefield that challenges us in so many different ways: money (or lack of), cooking skills (ditto) and let’s not get started on the difficult family members. Maybe we are even that person! So let’s step away from the false ideals and delusions and consider what Jesus came to offer us and what we and others really need: compassion. Jesus came to give us the compassion of God and as we receive it, so we are to share.

The St Vincent de Paul Society has launched their Christmas appeal, which you will hear about from your child/ren and from the school. Here we are called to help those who are obviously less well of than ourselves. This is a good place to begin, and what we give will make a difference in ways we may never know.

But we don’t stop there. Give compassion to your family and friends. Nobody ‘needs’ fancy gifts or expensive food, but we all hunger for a thoughtful gesture and to be served with love. If we start our Christmas preparations with compassion, with feeling for others, we begin a revolution in how we celebrate. Out go the unreal expectations that make us feel inadequate and depressed. In comes tenderness. If God loved the world, in all its weakness and failure, so much that he gave us Jesus, maybe this Christmas we can cut ourselves a little slack and be compassionate to all…ourselves included.

Loving Father, you sent Jesus to show your compassion to all. May I know his love with me, and as I begin my Christmas preparations, may compassion be the guiding light in all that I do for my family and friends. I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me.

End of Year Christmas Concert and Breakup

Thank you to the many families who attended this social gathering on Friday night. It was a great chance to catch up with many of you, and I am sure the performances by our children kept you thoroughly entertained. A special thanks to Santa, who, with the help of Mr Douglas and his ride on mower, popped in for a quick hello.

My thanks to the P and F Committee and their band of helpers for their assistance in running the night. I never cease to be amazed by the generosity shown by many of the parents in this school – we could not do it without you! If, as parents, you are looking for a way to contribute something to the school community, I urge you to come along to a P and F Meeting in the new year. My thanks, once more, to the P and F Executive Committee of 2021: Emma Singleton, Nathan Crossland, Carla McDonald, Tanya Johnson and Ryan Scott, as well as new committee members for 2022, Bev Van Nunen and Michael Harding who gave much time and energy, to ensure Friday night was successful. Thank you to the many parents who volunteered their time cooking the BBQ, serving behind the bar or helping in the busy kitchen. Your assistance was greatly appreciated.

I wish to thank the staff for not only their help and preparation with the organisational aspects of Friday night’s Christmas concert, but for the public thanks and acknowledgement that they gave to me. I was incredibly touched by Rheanna Starr’s kind words and the amazing singing by the choir, prepared and lead (in secret no less!) by Janette McLennan. It was not necessary, but truly appreciated and as I am sure was blindingly obvious, I was overcome with emotion!   Thank you all for your support and friendship. I hope you enjoyed the night as much as I did. The sense of community was certainly in the air, as it always is at this event!

Year 6 Graduation Mass

We look forward to celebrating the graduation from primary school of our Year Six classes this evening.  Celebrations will commence with Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral at 5.30pm, followed by  the cutting of the cake and nibblies and drinks in the Cathedral Corso for families who have indicated their attendance. On the last day of the school year, our Year 6 students will be presented with their Graduation certificates during a special assembly with the whole school.

Christmas Cards and Candy Canes – * Reminder *

As children write their Christmas cards we ask that you refrain from sending along candy canes. Please encourage your children to write thoughtful messages as they spread some Christmas cheer through card giving. Supporting projects in our school and community such as the St Vinnie’s Christmas Hamper Appeal is an alternative way to give, with quite a different message for children.

Staffing News

At the end of this year we will say farewell to a number of our staff members:

Congratulations Mrs Anne Lidster on your retirement! Thank you for all your years of service as a dedicated and passionate educator. We know that Anne is looking forward to spending more time at home with her husband, Paul, and enjoying precious moments with their grandchildren, pottering around the garden and farm. Finding a knowledgeable and skilled teacher like you, Mrs Lidster, is not an easy task! Retirement is the end of one phase of life and the beginning of a new, exciting chapter. Congratulations and best wishes, Anne.

At the end of this term, we say goodbye to Mrs Anne Standen. It is with the most sincere and heart-felt "thank you” to Anne for providing Year Two with consistent support, knowledge, guidance and precious life lessons this term. The passion you have for your job and what you teach is contagious. We look forward to seeing Mrs Standen in our classrooms again in the new year as one of our valued relief teachers.

We thank Mrs Rebekah Hall for the hard work and dedication she has contributed to make PE both fun and educational over the last two school terms. We appreciate the valuable knowledge and skills Rebekah has shared with our students to enable them to successfully participate in games and in different dance/aerobic routines.  We wish Bek, Ben and Knox all the best for 2022 and look foward to hearing about the arrival of baby Hall in the New Year.

This week we welcomed Stacey Franklin to our OSHC. Stacey will be working alongside Anj and Maddy over the coming Vacation Care period before taking over the responsibilities as Coordinator in the new year. You are very welcome Stacey, and we know that you will enjoy working in our wonderful OSHC.

School Fees

Thank you to those families who have addressed their outstanding school fee accounts. Significant outstanding amounts have the possibility to impact on our school budget for the 2022 year, which in turn can result in school and classroom funding cutbacks. If you have not made contact with me regarding your account yet, please do so as soon as possible.

Talent Quest

Please be advised that nominations for “Wandal’s Got Talent” are now being taken by our Year 6 students. This is an event which is held in the last week of school. Morning Drop Off - *Reminder*

Our friendly parent community have asked for some reminders about the rules with regard to morning drop off. Could we please ensure that our children are dropped off only at the "2 Minute Drop Off/Pick Up Zone" on Herbert Street. Students must not be dropped off at the bus zone on Rundle Street. These rules exist to keep children, parents and carers safe, and to minimise speed and traffic jams around schools. Being aware of and adhering to these rules helps protect our children on their way to and from school.

Touch Football

Congratulations to all of our touch football teams who represented our school on Saturday mornings at the Cyril Connell Fields for the junior touch competition. Well done to all of the students who participated. Thank you for demonstrating the qualities that embody sportsmanship! It is always wonderful to see our students working together as a team. Thank you to the coaches and managers who dedicated their time to train, encouraged and support our players. We are looking forward to next year's junior touch competition.

Gospel Reflection

Luke 21:25-28

There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Reflection

What was the gospel writer trying to convey to his readers by including this passage about the future?

What is the message for a modern audience?

The traditional Advent wreath with its four candles is an excellent reminder of the passing of the four weeks as one additional candle is lit in each of the four weeks. Identify four actions that you can undertake during Advent that are focused on living out the message of Jesus and helping to realise the reign of God.

Staff lead Prayer Assembly

Please join us in the Hall on Friday at 8.35am for prayer assembly, as staff share the message of Advent and Christmas.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hamper Appeal. Please donate before Wednesday 24 November as all items will be collected by the St Vincent De Paul Society on this date. Thank you for your generous donations!

Yarning with Mrs Semple

This week in the Be-Hive, I read a book to students, “Hello and Welcome” by Gregg Dreise. This joyful picture book celebrates Australia’s Indigenous heritage and the diversity we enjoy today. The story features traditional Gamilaraay language of the Kamilaroi people. Gregg Dreise celebrates Indigenous culture, Elders and future generations. I chose this book because it is very relatable to students, the story and the pictures are both educational and interesting.
