TERM 4 WEEK 8, 2021

Principal's Report

A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents/ Carers,

On, Friday December 10  you will receive your child’s report for Semester 2. The report is a modified format due to the changed learning environments children worked in over this semester. The reports follow the same format we used in Semester 1 last year, which provide comments in English, Mathematics and other Key Learning Areas but no grades.

Teachers have been using the time since returning on site to assess students and intensively support learning. Years 3-6 have completed the  Department of Education Check in assessment over the last few weeks. The check in a assessments provide a  snapshot of student learning in literacy and numeracy and provides us with a comparison to students in the same grade across the state. They do not provide individual student reports but gives us important data to inform learning programs.

Our K-2 grades have also completed phonics assessment, reading levels and mathematics assessment. The assessments have given us data to plan intensive supports for learning.

The results of assessment have shown that overall children are learning well and staff are pleased with their progress. Given the very challenging year we have had it is great to see how children's learning has been maintained. We thank parents for the huge part you have all played this year in supporting continuity of learning for your children..

With changes to the pick up and drop off arrangements around the school it is important that parents remind children of some important safe travel tips. Remember to:

•      Walk straight to school and come into the gates

•      Younger children should be accompanied by an adult, who should ensure they enter the gates.

•      Arrive at school between 8.25 am and 8.55am.

•      Walk directly to and from school if travelling alone.  Identify a safe route and walk when others are walking.

•      If you have a problem tell a trusted adult about it.

•      If late enter at Pendle Way gate.

We have changed the Presentation day date to accommodate other commitments which have arose. New date is Tuesday 7.12.21. parents of children receiving an award will receive an invite to the online presentation. We aplogise for any inconvenience.

regards,

Gabrielle Buczynski

Check-in Assessment

Year3 /Year 5 students will participate in  reading and numeracy check-in assessment over the next few weeks.  The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor Year 3/5/9* student learning following the period of learning from home.

The Check-in assessments can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.

Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment that they would normally receive in the classroom.

Covid Safe Guidelines

COVID Operations update

Dear parent or carer,

In order to minimise disruptions caused to schools by COVID-19 cases, and to maximise the time our students have learning in the classrooms a number of changes to operations for schools will be introduced from Monday 29 November for the remainder of Term 4.

Rapid antigen 'test-to-stay' program

A rapid antigen home testing (RAHT) ‘test-to-stay’ program will be available to any student who is a close contact of a COVID-19 case in a school setting. This will enable them to get back to school immediately following a negative PCR test and on the basis they do daily RAHTs before attending school across 7 consecutive days. This means that our students' learning is able to continue with minimal interruptions following a positive COVID-19 case. Full support will be available to help you implement this should it be required at our school and many other schools and students are already using RAHTs successfully.

Singing, chanting and instruments that rely on breath allowed outdoors

In line with community settings, instruments that rely on breath and singing and chanting will now be permitted if held outdoors, within cohorts, with distancing in place and where there is no sharing of instruments. Under these same conditions music classes, bands, ensembles, group repetition and choirs within cohorts can also resume.

An update to our cleaning protocols

NSW public schools are cleaned by professional cleaners each day, guided by expert advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), the National Health and Medical Research Council and NSW Health. As we have already seen in many schools, cohorting and our other COVID-safe layers of protection have been effective at minimising disruption. NSW Heath has provided clear advice, based on evidence that the department's regular clean, day clean and enhanced clean provides a more than sufficient layer of protection in schools for students and staff. NSW Health have advised there is no health and safety benefit to undertaking an environmental clean which is highly disruptive to a school’s ongoing operations and can close a school for up to 2 days. This is another important change that will get students back into classrooms faster in parallel with the ‘test-to-stay’ program. You can read more on the department's website about the different levels of cleaning in place in our schools.

Please continue to refer to the department's Advice for families page for the latest information on settings in our schools.

Thank you again for your continued support during this school term.

Pick up and drop off arrangements

K-6 and MC classes morning drop off

You may drop your child off at Pendle Way and Smith Street from 8.25 am. Please encourage children to walk in independently. It is desirable if parents wait in the car particularly for older children.

Students must arrive by morning bell times or gates will be shut and parents will need to ring the office.

MC students may be dropped at the rooms by parents but parents must complete the QR code to enter the grounds and show this to staff.

  • Kinder- Pick up at Smith Street at 2.40 pm
  • Year 1- Pick up at Pendle Way  at 2.40 pm
  • Year 2 -Pick up at Pendle Way at  2.45 pm
  • Preschool- at Smith Street at 2.45 pm
  • MC -Pick up at Pendle Way at 2.50 pm

Preschool drop off and pick up

Preschool parents/carers should not arrive before 8.55 am to avoid congestion at gates. Preschool parents will be able to sign children in at the gate at morning bell time and staff will collect children. Please be prompt as gates may be locked if you arrive late. When you collect preschoolers sign the folder at the gate and wait for staff to bring your child to you.

Early Intervention drop off and pick up

EI parents may enter  the Smith Street gate at 8.55 am ( staff will let you know when)to drop children at the gated area near the EI room but must complete QR sign on to enter the grounds. At 11.30 staff will bring children to the Smith Street gate where parents can sign children out.

Years 3-6 - may be collected at any gate.

From 25.10.21 students may enter by Arnett Street gate which will be opened between 8.45am -8.55 am. Students entering at this gate must walk to the gate by themselves. Parents should remain in cars and  keep away from the gate area.

Mask Wearing

When students and staff return to school the following requirements are in place.

  • masks are strongly recommended for primary students indoors and outdoors (unless exercising or eating).

Important reminders about school operations

Reminders

You can help us to keep everyone safe by following the following advice carefully. Please remember:

  • Parents and non-essential visitors are not permitted on the grounds, ring the office with enquiries. If the enquiry is class related - message your child’s teacher on Seesaw.
  • Students are encouraged to wear masks, you must provide a mask for your child if you wish then to wear one. Before students return allow your child to practise wearing mask and managing taking it on and off for eating etc.
  • If your child is unwell take them for a COVID test and provide a negative test result to school before they return to school. Children should not come to school if they are unwell.
  • Follow the pick up and drop off arrangements and do not congregate around school entrances. Maintain physical distance from others whilst collecting children and where possible wait in your car and allow your child to walk in and out of the school to the car.
  • Arrive at the time allocated to collect your child not earlier or later.

https://pendlehill-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

If your child is currently in our preschool and you are a local area student you need to let the office know you are intending to enrol them at school here.

Preschool

We are also taking preschool applications for 2022.

Children must turn 4 before 31 July 2022 to start at our preschool next year. Email the school at:

pendlehill-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au,

to receive a waiting list application form and required document details. The preschool will run on full day sessions in 2022 with children attending a five day fortnight. Preschool enrolment applications must be submitted before 10 September, 2021 in order to be considered for the first round of places.

The preschool program is a one year program for children in the year before they commence formal schooling. Children are only eligible for preschool for one year before they commence school. We are happy to discuss your child with you and offer advice if you are not sure if they should commence preschool in 2022.

Why is Preschool important?

Preschool helps children develop many vital skills. It particularly assists children to develop important social skills which make a huge difference to their learning when they commence school. If children come to school being able to better follow teacher direction, sit still and concentrate in a group of children and they are ready to start learning as soon as they begin school. Our preschool program focuses on these skills as well as many other areas and prepares children for learning in Kindergarten.

School Travel for 2022

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2022 can apply now.

Sensory Art

The children were involved in a sensory art experience. They used their hand strength to pump the coloured soapy liquid onto the tray. The children used descriptive language to describe how it felt. This was a cause and effect activity which allowed children to experiment and have fun.
