Principals Column

We are all getting excited as we prepare for PJ Day this Friday! Students may wear their Pyjamas to school, bring along their favourite teddy and a gold coin donation. This fundraising initiative has been chosen and directed by the SRC to raise awareness and money to support children in foster care. Students across the school are making cupcakes utilising all our school eggs and baking up a delicious feast for the DJ/PJ disco from 2-3pm on Friday afternoon.

This week we are holding our Parent/Teacher Conferences. This is a great opportunity for teachers to connect with parents around student progress. This effective active partnership in learning progress supports a cycle of continuous improvement for all our students.

Scotts Head Public School has a clear focus on student progress and achievement, all teaching staff are committed to deploy effective teaching strategies and innovative practices, and we are continually refining our use of Visible Learning. What is Visible Learning? Visible Learning is an approach to learning and teaching. It is based upon a large amount of evidence from Australian researcher John Hattie. He was interested in the factors which impact positively upon teaching and learning and in turn the factors which raise student results. Here are some of the key ideas from the Visible Learning research:

  •  The whole school community should have a shared language of learning.
  • Learners should be at the centre of a Visible Learning approach surrounded by inspired and passionate teachers.
  • When learning is made ‘visible’ (teachers know what they are teaching and learners know what they are learning), achievement increases.
  • A visible learning approach supports pupils to become assessment capable learners who know where they are in their learning, where they are going next and how they are going to get there.
  • Effective feedback is crucial – it should be personal for each child and ‘just in time’.
  • The greatest effects on learning come when pupils are their own teachers and when teachers are learners.

This attention, insight and understanding by all Scotts Head Public School teachers allows our school to maximise the impact on student learning.

COVID-19 and Our School

A reminder for all families

All students are expected to be at school unless they have even the mildest of COVID-19 symptoms.

Students should not attend school if unwell. Any student with any COVID-19 symptoms will be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.

Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms is strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received.

Visitors

Non-essential visitors are not permitted in schools.

Parents and carers are not allowed on site unless they have a scheduled meeting that cannot be conducted over the phone. This includes drop off and pick up of students for appointments, etc. If you need to collected your child early or drop off due to an appointment, please contact the office via the intercom at the front gate or by phone and drop your child off at the gate. You are not required to enter the school grounds and sign in your child.

Parents should:

  • maintain physical distancing by avoiding gathering outside of school gates at pick up time
  • remain outside of school grounds when picking up and dropping off students.
  • follow mask-wearing requirements; and
  • sign in using the Service NSW QR code when entering the school.

Spotlight on Year 3/4

We have had a great start to the new term with everyone coming back refreshed and ready for new learning experiences.

In Maths the students have been applying the mental strategies they learnt in the first half of the year to new multiplication and division problems. They are working towards increasing their fluency with their 2's, 5's and 10 times tables. Mrs C has taken the class on a Scavenger Hunt around the school looking for angles in the environment. They then created an iMovie to showcase their understanding.

Students have been learning about life at the Olympics. They have watched some highlights of events from the Olympics including the medal ceremonies. They completed athlete profiles which are now displayed on the library window. Students looked at the different temperatures in Japan and other countries and how they differ from Australia depending on their climatic regions.

Students have been exploring the use of connotation, imagery and symbol in quality texts. As part of this learning they have used technology like Mentimetre, Jamboard and Google Slides to represent their ideas. Students have looked at the use of colour, shape, line, salience and imagery to represent ideas and shape understanding.

In Science the year 3/4 have been learning about how the Earth's surface changes over time and how humans can impact this change. They have watched videos and created artwork showing the layers of the Earth. The class went for a walk around the school looking for small scale evidence of the weathering process. Students had a go at their own weathering experiment in the sandpit and next week they will be going for a walk around Scotts Head to see how it effects our local environment.
