PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a busy first term at Woree State High School.

Recently we conducted our Year 12 and Student Leader Induction Ceremony.  I wish all of these students a successful year ahead as they accept the challenges of representing their peers and providing our student body a voice in 2021.

At the Induction Ceremony, we also acknowledged our 2020 Senior Dux, Ryan Woodward. Ryan is studying online this year whilst he continues to pursue his competitive swimming career.

School Planning

Over the past twelve months Woree State High School has been engaged in a cycle of Review and Planning.  In Term 3, 2020 we had our Full School Review and since then, school staff have been working through the process of unpacking and responding to the feedback we received and planning the pathway forward for the next four years.

Four Year Strategic Direction

The key driver of all school planning and policy creation for the next four years is “The creation of an inclusive school environment where every student can succeed”.

During 2021 our Annual Implementation Plan will focus on four areas:

·         Positive Behaviours for Learning

·         Attendance

·         Inclusion

·         Teacher Capability Development

Our Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2021 is:

·         Implementing PB4L

·         Implementing Moderation Practices

Throughout 2021 there will be an increased focus on teachers having time to work together to intentionally collaborate in planning and develop an accessible curriculum that can accommodate the needs of all Woree State High School students.

Facilities Update

Although it took longer than we had initially anticipated, the F Block (Manual Arts) refurbishment is now complete.  The refurbishments include a new roof, extraction system and automated louvres which will significantly improve airflow and ventilation in the building, a redesign of the engineering workshops to facilitate students to work in both areas at the same time and a new computer alcove inside the design classroom.

The renovations have enabled a significant improvement in the functional use of all the classroom spaces within the block.

2021 Next Step Survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2020. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.

Between April and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2021.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM TEACHING & LEARNING

Deputy Principal Curriculum Teaching & Learning Report

NAPLAN:  The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy is running in 2021 after being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID.  The test is run throughout Australia from 11 - 21 May for all students in Years 7 and 9.  The tests are skills based so cannot be studied for, the best preparation is active involvement in classes at school and ensuring students are calm and well rested.  The program should not be stressful for students and the online tests adapt to different student ability levels as students answer questions.

Woree State High School students in Years 7 and 9 completed a practice test on Thursday 25 March to help them get familiar with the online test environment.  They have also had brief sessions in their English and Mathematics classes to show them the types of questions they will have to answer and to understand the online tools.  Parents and Carers who want to explore what the online tests are like can use the Public Demonstration Site here: https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site to look at example tests.  We wish our students all the best with these assessments.

Senior Assessment: Students in Years 11 and 12 must follow the school and QCAA requirements for assessment.  All assessment is due before 4:00pm on the due date for all subjects and students in Senior.  Students with illness or other issues affecting their ability to submit assessment on time must have completed an AARA (Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustment) application.  These can be submitted to the Guidance Officer or Head of Department Senior Schooling (Mr Brad Wright), and must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation, such as a medical certificate.  Academic results for Year 12 assessments are given to students by their teachers but these results are provisional until confirmed by the QCAA.  Confirmed results for Year 12 students will be available in May and will be reported on in the Semester 1 Academic Reporting Period at the end of Term 2.

Teaching and Learning: Teachers have been working hard in 2021 on a project called ‘Moderation’.  This has involved teaching teams working collaboratively to review assessment, unit plans and teaching strategies in order to make lessons and assessment more engaging for students.  The overall aim is to improve student academic outcomes and enjoyment of schooling.  Teachers have put much time and effort into this process to develop units of work and continually review and improve them.  They are also spending time meeting to cross check marking to ensure all students are receiving appropriate standards in their assessment tasks.  Well done on your efforts with this project teachers – I’m sure the students are appreciating the revised learning experiences and assessments.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES OFFICER REPORTS

Yr 7 SSSO Report

Yr 7 SSSO Mr Matthew Coxon

It just seems like yesterday that our Year 7 students nervously walked through the gates of Woree State High School for Day 1 of High School, and now as quick as a flash, we are almost a quarter through the year.

Our Year 7 students have quickly become part of the school community and have already been involved in many great events and activities including: Student Council Meetings, Year 7 Meet and Greet BBQ, Swimming Carnival and the Junior Leaders Forum. Our Year 7 students have also had many opportunities to join sport teams and other clubs including the Chess Club, Dungeon and Dragons Club and the Live Production Crew, as well as attending lunch time sessions in the Virtual Reality Room in the Library. To finish off the term, the students that have demonstrated commitment to the Woree 4 and attended school regularly will be able to participate in our first Rewards Day, which will be a mini disco in the school’s theatre on the last day of term. To finish my report, I have two articles written by two of our Year 7 students detailing the Year 7 Meet and Greet BBQ and Junior Leaders Workshop.

Mr Matthew Coxon

Year 7, Student Support Services Officer

Yr. 7 Meet and Greet BBQ

In Week 3, on Wednesday February 10, the Year 7 students and families had a Meet and Greet BBQ with the teachers of Woree State High School in the shelter. A free sausage sizzle and burgers were cooked by the Hospitality students. The Student Council organised drinks for $2.00, which was the Student Councils first fundraiser of the year. Xander W (7B) started the evening with the acknowledgement to country, which he delivered with great confidence. It was a great evening for our school community to come together and for Year 7 parents to meet their child’s teachers.

Samantha S (7C)

Junior Leaders Workshop

In Week 6, on Friday March 5, Year 7 – 9 Student Council members - 2021, were invited to attend a special Junior Leaders Workshop, where many fun and exciting activities were planned to help with our journey this year into leadership. We focused a lot on our speaking skills and public speaking confidence. We learned a few tips which my fellow student councillors and I use to speak clearly and confidently on our school year level parades every Wednesday. We were also encouraged to participate in a range of team building games and activities with our fellow student council members.

Yr 11 SSSO Report

Year 11 SSSO Ms Jaynie Johnson

2021 has started off with an amazing start for the Year 11s. They have begun their senior years at Woree State High School with the enthusiasm and dedication that is expected of exceptional school leaders. This year is about them learning how to adapt to the new role of being seniors and prepare them for their final year of high school in 2022. Some Year 10s have participated in the 11s 4 7s programme which has thrown them into the classroom as a mentor to the younger students of Woree State High School. The valued role as peer mentor is respected at Woree State High School. Students selected to take on this role display abilities to assist and guide the Year 7s to engage in learning and to understand the values of the great Woree High.                                                                                                          Student Photo - 11s 4 7s Peer Mentors

Year 11s are in their first year of the new senior syllabus and will be the third lot of Year 12s to graduate under the new senior outline. This is an extremely challenging time for the students as the workload and expectations are much higher than their previous years of study, however, their resilience and motivation is strong. Although Term 1 is ending, attendance is the minimum goal moving forward. For students to get the most out of their study it is a cohort and school goal that students are reaching the 85% attendance target.

This year there is much to look forward to. This includes leadership camp, leadership speeches and nominations, the planning of their senior shirts and legacy for 2022. With so much happening, it is important that students are taking a time to do something that de-stresses them and that they enjoy.

I wish students and their families a well-deserved Easter holiday.

Year 10 Visual Arts Exhibition & Year 9 Digital Media

Term 1 Exhibition

Students at Woree State High School were treated to a spectacular exhibition of artworks throughout Term 1. The exhibition, displayed in the school art gallery, showcased works from 2020, Year 10 Visual Arts and Year 9 Digital Media students. The Visual Art students works exhibited their skills in weaving and ceramics whilst the Digital Media students created album covers for fictional musicians. Many who viewed the exhibition remarked on the fantastic imagination and skill demonstrated by our talented young students.

Concert Band Performance

The Woree State High School Concert Band has had its first performance of 2021 at the Year 12 Induction Ceremony. The Concert Band performed numbers such as Chariots of Fire prior to the ceremony and performed the National Anthem during the Ceremony with Year 12 student, Joshua F singing the Anthem. After many cancelled performances in 2020 due to COVID-19, it was great to see the Concert Band on stage again.

Music - Live Production Crew

Students at Woree State High School have been given the opportunity to join the newly created “Live Production Crew”. Students have been learning the basics of live sound such as setting up PA systems, microphones and pumping music beats. The students have also been learning about theatre lighting, and can confidently create and program stage lighting scenes and chases. The “Live Production Crew”, meets once a week for an hour after school and students are enthusiastically developing their skills ready to support the various whole-school and Performing Arts department events.

Musos Club

Students from across the school have been participating in the Musos Club this term. Every Monday and Friday at second break, students have been able to access the music room and instruments to play music. It has been wonderful to see students forming bands, playing and singing together. Woree State High School is blessed with great musical talent, and even some budding song writers have popped their heads up during our Musos Club sessions.

12 Hospitality Salad Bar Buffets

This term, the Year 12 Hospitality Classes hosted a Salad Bar Buffet for staff during the lunch hour for our Practical Assessment. The Buffet was held over two Tuesdays – 16 and 23 March. Thirteen students each week, selected, prepared and presented a salad and staff came and chose from the wide variety of dishes on offer. The students worked with a variety of new ingredients and techniques. It was an exciting learning experience as each student had to organise their time and cooking processes to ensure the dishes were completed on time. COVID safe processes meant that students had to serve the salads to staff, another new skill to learn.  The staff praised the students for their efforts and enjoyed the variety of salads on offer. The added bonus was that the students got to try the leftovers and sample foods they had never eaten before.

SCIENCE

Science - Year 11 Aquatics

Year 11 Aquatics Field Trip

On Wednesday the 18 and Thursday 19 of March, the Year 11 Aquatics classes had the opportunity to visit the Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre. John (Centre staff) met us on arrival and divided us into four boating groups that would be our sampling buddies for the day. Our goal in visiting the centre was to collect abiotic chemical water quality data and biotic factors in the form of a species list. This data then provided the last of the required results for our Term 1 assessment – Water Quality – Mountain to Sea.

Both days were hugely successful, with Thursday’s group spotting two crocodiles, eleven species of mangroves, ten species of fish, a mud crab, a moon jellyfish and many species of birds. The team at the environment centre did a great job in helping us to gather the results required and Woree’s students behaved and participated really well.

It was the first time on a boat for student Freya W, and she was a complete natural. She took some excellent photos, showed no fear of being up close to the mangroves and proved herself a pro at managing mud crab pots.

Thank you to all the students that participated in making the trip a success.

SCHOOLTECH

SchoolTech and Shoreline

Another Great Start at SchoolTech for 2021

Our new cohort of Year 11 SchoolTech students are well on their way to success in a career of their choice.

Students are studying Construction, Engineering, Electrical & Conservation and Land Management.

Students organised their own work experience placement and have been attending work every Monday since Week 5. Many students are keen for Semester 2 to start when they will be attending work placement every Monday and Tuesday.

JIME changes its name to SHORELINE

The very successful JIME (Junior Indigenous Marine & Environmental Cadets Program) has had a name change to Shoreline.

The name Shoreline represents the connection between the land and sea, and is symbolic of the mission to support Shoreline trainees as they shift from the stability of their youth to the unpredictable oceans of their independence, careers and adulthood that lay ahead.

The change is in the name only. Other than that, the program is identical to previous years. All eighteen SchoolTech Shoreline trainees who have started in 2021 are proving to be fantastic employees on the Experience Co Vessels (17 students) and on Passions of Paradise (1 student). They will all complete their Cert II Coxswains in their traineeship.

The thirteen Year 12 Shoreline trainees are all enjoying their traineeships as well and will complete their Cert II Coxswains in their traineeship.

We also have one student at Woree State High School who is a Shoreline Trainee, studying Cert III Tourism and working at the Dome with the CaPTA group.

This brings the total of trainees in 2021 to 32 students. The program is certainly growing.

It is wonderful to see our Year 12 Shoreline graduates from 2020 who are now employees of Experience Co., being mentors to our current trainees.

We look forward to these young students achieving their goals and seeking employment in the marine industry when they have completed Year 12.

Construction Skills Queensland - Try a Trade

Say “Hi” to the next generation of First Nations tradies!

Dianna, Denisha and Katherine were among the 25 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who spent some time trying trades at the Cairns Convention Centre.

Together with WorldSkills and TAFE Queensland, CSQ’s Try’a Trade program delivered an interactive setting that allowed students to try their hand at various skill and trade areas.

Students from Woree State High School, Bentley Park College and Djarragun College, had hands-on experience with TAFE Queensland teachers in the trades of carpentry, block laying, and electrical through the event organised by Construction Skills Queensland.

The $176 million refurbishment and expansion of the Cairns Convention Centre is now well underway, it currently has 11% target for workers who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander involvement, above the target of 6.6%.

It’s great to see diversity in action, in Cairns and right across Queensland!

RESILENCE PROJECT

The Resilience Project - TRP@HOME

Woree State High School is delivering The Resilience Project – TRP, this year as part of our student’s curriculum learning. The 4 key strategies of TRP are Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness – G.E.M., and Emotional Literacy. These are embedded in all things we do at Woree from Learning to extra curriculum activities.

TRP supports young people to form evidence-based habits now that will increase their capacity to deal with challenges, changes and stressors in the future.

TRP@HOME is a series of activities and ideas to continue the theme of G.E.M at home. These are a great conversation starter with your child and a wonderful way to help develop your child’s capacity to deal with challenges, changes and stressors.

RESOURCE CENTRE

Term 1 in our Resource Centre

Term 1 in the library

The library has been a busy place this term as we hand out the 2021 textbooks, run the stationary shop and have had Year 7 library lessons.

Textbooks: Please check your student has collected their 2021 textbooks. It is a requirement that ALL books loaned from the library are kept in snap lock bags to protect them from water damage (and lunch damage!). These bags are available from the library for 20c or 1 reward ticket.

The stationary shop has proven to be a very popular with guitar picks and tuckshop vouchers being some of the most popular items.

Year 7 classes all came to the library one lesson a week for the first 5 weeks of term to learn about our online resources and the fiction and non-fiction section, and of course learn how to borrow out a book (which gets one reward ticket).

EVENTS AND SPECIAL DAYS

Harmony Day Friday 19 March

Harmony Day

Woree State High School is proud to celebrate a community of over forty nationalities and cultures.

Across the county, Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Last week, we learnt some stories from students and teachers about where they have come from, traditions passed down to them, and what culture and harmony means today and into the future. As students walk throughout the school, they can read some of these posters about teachers and students from our school.

At lunch time on Friday 19 March, students and teachers were invited to participate in some chalk art with their friends. An initiative of the student council, the aim was to fill the walkway between the tuckshop and library with positive messages, drawings and sayings that are important to individuals.

Swimming Carnival Friday 19 February

Fun and Competition at the Pool

Friday 19 February. Grey stormy clouds could not dampen the enthusiasm of those students and staff attending this year’s swimming carnival. Boisterous chanting’s and flag waving, led by the House Captains, stirred the students into a spirited competition mode.

The usual swimming events began with gusto, and great effort by all competitors continued throughout the day.

Highlights included the ever popular novelty events, motivating dance music provided by The Arts Faculty, BBQ lunch by the Student Council and students and staff wearing fabulous costumes and team colours to show support for their houses – Trojan, Pinder, Gemini and Apollo. The day culminated with the announcement and presentation of awards. Pinder seized the day to win the carnival.

Important Information

Early Departures – If your student needs to leave school early during the school day for an appointment a note needs to be brought to the school, alternatively you can use the yellow absence note in the back of the student planner. Students must come to the office to sign out before leaving the school grounds.  There is an increasing number of parents/carers ringing the school wanting to sign their student out immediately with no notice.

Student Illness – Students need to advise their class teacher if unwell and present themselves to sick bay so a parent/carer can be notified. Students are not to call parents directly to collect them without first notifying sick bay.

Concerns and Complaints – Parents/carers are encouraged to discuss classroom issues/concerns with the class teacher first. If the issue is unable to be resolved, parents/carers are encouraged to make an appointment with either the subject Head of Department, Year Level Coordinators, Responsible Behaviour Officer or Deputy Principal Student Services to discuss the matter further.

If you have changed your postal address, phone number/s, email address or emergency contacts recently, please contact the Administration Office as soon as possible to update your details.

Electronic Sign

Please continue to watch out for important news and messages on our electronic notice board at the front of the school.  The sign is a valuable asset to our school for advertising and communicating a variety of messages to our students, parents/carers and the wider school community.

School Zone Awareness

Please ensure that the new School Zone speed limits for Woree State and Woree State High School are observed during student drop-off and pick-up times.

Tuckshop Volunteers needed

If you would like to volunteer any of your spare time to help out in the Tuckshop, please don’t hesitate to come in and see Mike Janse at the Tuckshop. Mike is always looking for assistance to help prepare foods for the lunchtime rushes as well as special school events.

Uniform Shop

We are a uniform school as determined by the P&C Association.

The image we present to our community is important to maintain the positive reputation of which we are so proud. At all times, students are required to wear appropriate footwear (closed in shoes). In the event a student is unable to wear their uniform, a note from the parent/guardian is required.

The Uniform Shop is open every Thursday between 8:00 – 9:00 am.

EFTPOS is available for all purchases.

A limited range of second-hand uniforms are available for purchase. Any donations of good quality used uniforms are welcomed.
