Letter from the Principal

Tuesday February 9th 2021

Dear Families

Last week  was an exciting time at St John the Baptist as we introduced our Year 6 Leaders to our school community. The children were presented with their Year 6 badge, their leadership badge and their Year 6 bomber jacket. Our Year 6s have had a great start to the school year and have been excellent examples to all the younger students in our school particularly their Prep buddies. They look fantastic in their bomber jackets!

Congratulations to the following children who will lead our community in 2021

Swimming Training

This year we will once again run swimming training sessions before school on a Tuesday morning from 8.00am-8.30am to prepare our swimming squad for the District Swimming Carnival. Notes went out last week for children in Year 3-6 who would like to trial for this event (children must be able to competently swim 50m). The swimming training will take the place of the Running Club for the first part of Term 1 at the swimming pool at St Joseph’s College. At the conclusion of these swimming training sessions running club will commence for the remainder of the year (weather permitting).

Twilight on the Green

We were disappointed to cancel our picnic due to the weather on Friday night. We look forward to seeing everyone for the Twilight Picnic on Friday 26th February. Let’s hope and pray for fine weather!

Year 5/6 Camp Rumbug

Our Year 5/6 children and their teachers will be heading to Camp Rumbug in Foster from tomorrow Wednesday 10th February - Friday 12th February. We wish all our campers a happy and safe camp experience. Thankyou to Sue Cahill, Tracey Ryan, Shari Correlje, Emily Johnston, Sue Davey & Ange Cavarra who will be taking time away from their own families to attend the camp. I am lucky enough to be heading up to camp on Wednesday and staying overnight. I’ll return to school Thursday afternoon. It’s a great opportunity to share a wonderful experience with the children and get to know them in a different context.

School Open Day and 2022 Prep Enrolment

Our school open day will take place on Wednesday 10th March from 9.00am-5.00pm. A hard copy note has come home today inviting parents to help out on the day with  school tours. Please invite any friends, family or neighbours who have a child eligible to start school in 2022 to come along and see our wonderful school in action.

We already have children enrolled for Prep 2022. If you have a child who is eligible to start Prep in 2022 please make contact with the school office to complete an enrolment form. As an existing family with siblings in the school you are our first priority for enrolment. It is important that we know our incoming Prep siblings so we know how many places we can offer to new families. Offers for placements for Prep for 2022 will go out by the end of Term 1, 2021.

School Sports Day

Our annual St John the Baptist sports day will be held on Friday 19th February at Knox Athletics Track. All children in the school will participate in events to earn points for their house. We hope that you will be able to help out on the day either as a parent helper or as part of the cheering crowd in the stands. Seeing our Preps run their first race ever is an event not to be missed! The children will be taken by bus to and from this event.

Change to Uniform Opening Hours

Please note there has been a change to our uniform opening hours. The uniform shop will now be open on a Monday morning (8.30-9.00am) and Friday afternoon (2.30-3.00pm).

Unexplained Student Absence: Notifying Parents

Attendance Guidelines for Victorian Schools now state: ‘schools must advise parents/guardians of unexplained absences on the same day, as soon as practicable.’ As a result of these guidelines I would like to remind parents that if your child is absent from school you need to advise us of their absence either via a phone call to the school office or via our skoolbag app. We will place a phone call to any families where we have an unexplained absence for their child.

Parent Parking

Just a reminder that the top carpark is for staff cars only. All families need to park in the bottom carparks or the carpark behind the hall to keep areas where children are walking safe from moving traffic. Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

School Calendar

All dates for our school year are on our google calendar. The calendar can be found on our school website www.sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au under the current parents/calendar tab. Any changes to these calendar dates will be advertised via the school newsletter.

P&F Meeting - Monday February 15th

Join us in the staffroom from 7.00pm, as we plan the year ahead! Don’t be shy – you can come along as many times as you like without formally joining the committee! Meetings usually go for about an hour, AND we supply Tim-Tams!

Bunnings BBQ

Bunnings BBQ - Monday 8th March (Labour Day Public holiday)We’ve been fortunate enough to nab Labour Day public holiday for our Bunnings BBQ. Fingers crossed - with all the people DIY-ing that weekend - we will have a ripper of a fundraising day! As always, many hands make light work, so if you are able to donate a couple of hours on the day, please do. Keep an eye out for the volunteer notice coming home in the next week or so.
Thanks to JHL Accounting for sponsoring the BBQ.

SJB Big Day Out!!!! (aka winery tour) - Saturday March 13th

Join us as we head to the Yarra Valley to check out some wineries, breweries, perhaps the chocolatier AND have a spot of lunch.

Expect a 10.00 departure, 17.30 return (from school grounds).  Cost circa $125ph (includes tastings, lunch & LOTS of laughs!)  What happens on tour, stays on tour!

Dress Down Day for the Children - Wednesday March 17th

Wear green for St Patricks Day. Gold Coin donation – ALL proceeds given to charity.  The charitable donation initiative started in Term 4 2019 with ‘Five for the Fires’. As a school community we managed to raise a whopping $850 for the Red Cross Fire appeal. In 2021 we will work with the grade 6 leaders to determine where the money will be donated each term.
