Term 2 | Week 6 | 24 May 2021

Principals Column

Welcome all families to an exciting Week 6

This week finds us over half way through the term and counting down to the ASYIK Indonesian Arts Festival being held on Sunday 30 May in Scotts Head Reserve from 10am-3pm.

There is hive of activity and an air of excitement as singing and dancing rehearsals are taking place. There is a real life Becak (Indo bike/passenger transport) in the sports shed that students are able to experience and access supervised at lunchtimes throughout the week. We also have a giant ceremonial gong in the library. On Monday morning Indonesian Consulate dignitaries will visit our school, where we will showcase our Bilingual school students in their learning environment.

It is also fabulous to witness genuine, student leadership in action again with all Year 6 students delivering and facilitating activities in their Peer Groups for one hour per week in the “Learned Leaders” Program. Year 6 students design the varied activities and teachers then support and critique leaders on their leadership skills and provide explicit feedback on how their skills are progressing and where to next. The rotation of activities include creating a short film, science challenge, sports games challenge, Bush Tucker track forest zone identification and management and group dance choreography.

Students across the school are also rising to the challenge of entering the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition and all students K-6 are working on writing and delivering a prepared speech on their chosen topic.  The winners from each grade will then progress onto the next round.

This Friday 28 May is our “Whole School in One Golf Day”. Three expert coaches are coming to the school to deliver a 50-minute lesson to each class during sport time to increase development of hand eye coordination skills through playing golf. The coaches are bringing equipment that will suit all our students with their ages and sizes and the school has purchased a golf kit that students will continue to access to develop skills further.

Writing across all classes this week will be in focus with each class producing a creative writing piece of work, students will then be able to critique their writing against a success criteria and self-assess how their writing is progressing and how and what they could do make continuous progress. This explicit process ensures students have a clear understanding on how to self assess, reflect and how to improve. At Scotts Head Public School we want to ensure students have the belief, skills and learners habits to be lifelong learners, and that students will be able to apply these learner qualities when faced with learning challenges.

Classroom Spotlight on K/1

It has been a very busy and productive Term 2 so far in the K/1 classroom.

Our Cross Country morning at the beginning of the term was very exciting. All students showed incredible stamina and resilience completing the run with huge smiles and support from Year 6 Buddies.

In English this term we are focusing on Narrative Texts, discussing the framework for a Narrative in that it has an introduction, a complication and a conclusion. A focus on handwriting using our Whales learning intentions and success criteria to reflect on our learning.

In Mathematics this term we are learning addition, odd and even numbers and skip counting by 2’s and 5’s and 10’s.

We had a wonderful excursion down to the beach with our buddies sharing stories and enjoying being together.

We’ve been having lots of fun exploring the Bush Tucker Track, making clay bowls, designing and painting calico bags for Mothers Day and building with our construction toys.

On Friday mornings we have been heading down to the oval with the Year 1/2 class to meet up with Uncle Ritchie who puts us through the paces with running, long jump and relay races in preparation for our School Athletics Carnival.

Many thanks to all the families of the K/1 class for your ongoing commitment to our Home Reading and Rainbow Sight Word Programs.

Circular Circus - Visiting Performance

What a blast! On Monday 24 May "Heidi Hoops" came to school to perform her amazing one-woman-show. The high energy show combined hoola-hoops and magic tricks with a bit of maths thrown in. The kids were entertained with a variety of tricks and quizzed on numbers, time, chance and probability. There was also some audience participation from a few lucky students. Here are some photos of the show a few comments from the audience:

Sarah: "It was amazing! It was cool how she did the hoop tricks"

Charlie: "It was very funny. I liked the barbies"

Erin: "My favourite part was when she had to do 26 tricks in 5 minutes!"

John: "My favourite thing was when I got to roll the dice"

Congratulations Tilly!

Our Year 6 student, Tilly, recently attended the Far North Coast/ Mid North Coast Surfing Titles in Lennox Head and competed in the Under 14 Girls Division.

Tilly performed really well in her heats and progressed to the final where she finished 4th. This place gives her entry and seeding to compete in the NSW State Titles in Maroubra later in the year.

Congratulations Tilly, we are really proud of you. Keep riding those awesome waves.

COVID-19 and our School

With the cold and flu season upon us, we would like to remind parents and carers that in accordance with advice from NSW Health, students should not attend school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

Please advise the school of your child’s absence on the first day they are away from school and include any symptoms they may be experiencing. You can do this by phone, email or via the Skoolbag app.

Students who are unwell with flu-like symptoms are strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.

Please provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school. You can simply email a screenshot of the text message you receive to the school: scottshead-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all visitors to the school, that they must sign the school sign-in sheet where they acknowledge that they will comply with the COVID-19 requirements for visitors, contractors and service providers each time they visit. Visitors must also check in using the Service NSW QR code.

We need your help with the School Banking program!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same time each week and will only take a small amount of your time. Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they practice saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

As part of volunteering you are eligible to receive a Certificate of Attainment that details the activities that you are involved in. For example: cash handling, program facilitation, account reconciliation and more.

Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please contact the P&C on scottsheadpandc@hotmail.com.

Scotts Head Public School local pirates are turning the tide on kids’ brain cancer!

On Friday 25 June, Scotts Head Public School will be hoisting the mainsail for The Kids’ Cancer Project Pirate Day 2021. Pirate Day is a swashbuckling day of dressing up like a pirate to raise money and awareness for children's brain cancer research.

Pirate Day has raised more than $360,000 since 2015. These funds are already helping researchers make waves in the lab to improve outcomes for kids with cancer.

Funds raised this year will be going toward the work of Dr Raelene Endersby, Co-Head, Brain Tumour Research at Telethon Kids Institute. “In a project funded by The Kids’ Cancer Project we are investigating an exciting new immunotherapy treatment,” says Dr Endersby. The study aims to teach the body’s immune system to recognise and destroy brain cancer cells. The team’s research has the potential to lead to new clinical trials in the near future and increase survival rates for children diagnosed with brain cancer.

Col Reynolds OAM, founder of The Kids’ Cancer Project is hopeful that the Pirate Day initiative will raise awareness as well as funds for children with brain cancer. “The startling fact that many Australian’s aren’t aware of is that brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease,” he said. “Funds raised through Pirate Day can make a huge difference.”

Donations will be collected at Scotts Head Public School throughout the day on Friday 25 June 2021. You can also host a Pirate Day. Visit pirateday.com.au and register today or make a donation directly to The Kids’ Cancer Project online at thekidscancerproject.org.au.

The facts:

  • May is Brain Cancer Action Month.
  • Brain tumours are the most common form of solid tumours among children. Brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease.
  • As with other tumours in kids and adults, surgery is the primary treatment, usually followed by radiation treatment and/or chemotherapy.
  • Because a child’s brain is still developing, these treatments can result in more substantial and permanent side effects than they would for an adult.

For more information about Pirate Day and The Kids’ Cancer Project, contact Jennie Smiedt on 0403084589 or jennie@tkcp.org.au.
