Classes update...

I usually really enjoy writing my weekly message, however, this week, I've had to share some important, yet sad, news for K Joyful...

It is a requirement for all government schools in NSW to submit their enrolment numbers early Week 3 (this week). As our numbers have been stable for the past few years, we have been able to form classes from Day 1.

Unfortunately for us, an unusually high number of students have left the school, including some unexpected ones after our classes were formed. The online class calculator we use has generated a 14-class outcome for 2021, instead of our 15 classes, as we are a small number of enrolments off the minimum requirement.

Please understand that we are unable to take any non-local enrolments, as we are classified as being at capacity.

So, very sadly for all of us, we are going to have to say goodbye to Ms Jennett for now...her last day will be Monday 8 March. From Tuesday, our Kindergarten students will be in 2 classes, rather than 3.

At any time during the year, should our enrolment numbers rise to the minimum requirement for 15 classes again, regardless of what year the students are in, we will be able to re-form K Joyful immediately.

Keeping all fingers and toes crossed!

Swimming Carnival

We had a great day on Wednesday at Drummoyne Swimming Centre, for our annual swimming carnival!

Huge thanks must go to Mr Carlton for organising, as well as to all the teachers and staff for ensuring we had a well-run event!

An extra-special shout out goes to the parents and carers who volunteered to assist on the day! Thanks so much!

Congratulations, Ms Cooper!

Congratulations!

Ms Amelia Cooper, teacher of 1/2 Altruism, has been successfully accredited at Proficient Teacher level!

It is a mandatory requirement under the Teacher Accreditation Act 2004 that teachers are accredited at Proficient Teacher Level, and maintain that accreditation, with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

Teachers who have achieved the Proficient Teacher level are experienced teachers who have demonstrated practice that meets the requirements for full accreditation in NSW.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Most Asian countries celebrate Lunar New Year, as well as those with major Asian populations, including Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Ox is the second of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Ox was about to be the first to arrive, but Rat tricked Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox. Thus, Ox became the second animal.

Oxen are honest and earnest. They are low key and never look for praise or to be the centre of attention. This often hides their talent, but they’ll gain recognition through their hard work.

They believe that everyone should do what’s asked for them and stay within their bounds. Though they are kind, it’s difficult for them to understand persuasion using pathos. Rarely losing their temper, they think logically and make great leaders.

Years of the Ox: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

FROM YOUR P&C

P&C Update – co-ordinator needed for Welcome Drinks!

Hi,

Thanks to everyone who took part in our P&C meeting for 2021 on Wednesday night.

We discussed a number of important activities and issues including:

  • whether to introduce a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program here (spoiler alert - we’re going to survey parents to see what you think);
  • the loss of one of our kindergarten classes because of current enrolment numbers;
  • whether to support a request to fund new books for the library (it was unanimously supported);
  • an update on our budget and three-year strategic plan;
  • the state of the school toilets – fixing them is already a project for our new student Prime Minister, Lexi. (We asked Maria to give us a quotes for short term fixes and a complete replacement/rebuild so we can put to parents as a possible focus for fundraising this year);
  • an update on our first event for the year – the Welcome Drinks for parents (save the date – Friday 19 March); and
  • some concerns about the responsiveness of the current Band providers.

The minutes for the meeting, including resolutions, will be shared in the lead up to our next meeting in March.

We agreed that we would host our 2021 Welcome Drinks at the bowlo next door to school, (or the school pub as its affectionately called by parents).

We have volunteers ready to help and the bowlo is ready to cater the event but we need a parent who can help co-ordinate it all and bring the event together on the night. We think this will be a fairly straightforward event to manage as the bowlo is doing most of the work. So if you are able to help as a co-ordinator then please email us at balmainpspc@gmail.com asap.

Next month, we’ll hold our AGM which is where we vote on the Executive Positions for the Committee. There are up to five positions available – President, 1 or 2 Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer.

The current Exec team are all keen to stand again (and will hopefully be supported on the night(!) but we may need another Vice President as part of our succession planning. A number of the current Exec are parents of children in yr 6 so the involvement of new parents is crucial - this is a great opportunity for our newer parents to get more involved.

If you’d like to nominate for a spot, then you need to be a member. To do that all you need to do is attend one meeting and make a gold coin donation. The P&C starts with a normal March meeting and then goes into the AGM so new parents have a chance to join and vote or nominate if they want to.

If you have any questions, please email us at balmainpspc@gmail.com

Thanks!

The Balmain P&C Exec

  • Shehana (President and mum to Luca in Yr 6 and Sunny in Yr 1)
  • Victoria (Vice President and Secretary mum to Harry in Yr 6)
  • Cliff (Vice President and dad to Logan in Yr 6)
  • Paul (Treasurer and dad to Jasper in Yr 1)

Spotlight on...

3/4 HARMONY!!!!

Students in 3/4 Harmony have been focussing on visual literacy in English. We have been reading the book ‘Fox’ by Margaret Wild and examined how the author captures the emotions of the characters.

In mathematics, the students have been recognising and representing numbers up to five digits. They have been working as a whole class, in small groups and with a partner, using dice and whiteboards to identify the number before and after.
