SHELLEY'S REFLECTION

Together in God’s love, St Joseph’s will empower students to encounter the future with respect, courage and kindness, enriched by life-giving relationships and inspired to bring the Gospel to life.

Today I am grateful to the staff, students and parent/carers at St Joseph’s. Yes, all of You! I have noticed the actions of each and every one of you, as well as having the good fortune to hold a conversation with most of you. I am so grateful for how you dig deep to find connection with the children, the staff and beginning to do this with each other. The children are calm because you are calm. Calm is contagious just as much as the opposite emotion, anxiety. Thank you for supporting each other and for helping me. I really appreciate the laughter, high energy, willingness to seek to understand and for the curiosity coming from questions that are being asked, especially in the Welcome Conversations that have occurred over the past weeks, finishing tonight. Thank you for creating and contributing to our community, that I love to drive to work to see and sit amongst you all.

Last Thursday, two students were presented bikes that had been built by the Point Cook Centrals Football Club, as part of a team building exercise and supporting local communities.  The smiles on those children’s faces were taken as a picture memory for my mind for eternity, as they rode their bikes to school the next day.

The welcome conversations end today and the positive responses are filling our cups! These are the little things that make me feel like the luckiest principal in the world. You are making a difference, sharing love and building relationships with each little Christ action you do! It counts!

Thank you all.

Kind regards,

Shelley

FOUNDATION - STUDENT VOICE

What an amazing start to the year! The Foundation students have settled in so well to school life and routines. Last week we participated in some different learning experiences together and we had so much fun. On Tuesday we went outside to explore and play with different types of bubbles and then we came inside and did some writing about it. We also came together as a community to have a picnic and enjoy some time getting to know each other. On Friday, we introduced our class pets, Sunny, Kevin and Buddy. They are sooo excited to spend time with each student in their class!

Virat (Foundation Bernie) - I liked the bubble machine because it made lots of bubbles. I looked up and there were so many bubbles in the sky.

Aydan (Foundation Erin) - I love coming to school to play outside with my friends and my favourite learning is reading time, writing and having lunch.

Ebony (Foundation Bridget) - I love playing outside. My favourite game is super hero. It's so much fun outside.

LEARNING DIVERSITY

Over the past week, teachers have had the pleasure of meeting with families through Welcome Conversations or Program Support Group Meetings to discuss their child. These conversations have allowed teachers and families to build up positive working relationships together. Whilst these conversations allow a formal opportunity for families to meet with teachers, please be assured that families are able to contact their child’s teacher at any time throughout the year via email or a phone call to the school and your child’s teacher will contact you in a timely manner before or after school. At St Joseph's we highly value communication and appreciate your openness and willingness to work together.

If there are any families who are currently accessing NDIS, or are working on a submission and require support, please see the information attached which may be useful to you.

KITCHEN GARDEN

It’s been full steam ahead in the new Kitchen Garden space. Lots of vegetable seedlings have been planted as well as an abundance of herbs that children have had the opportunity to smell and taste. It’s fantastic to see children already learning to identify plants using their senses. It’s been great to see the children enjoying the new kitchen garden space and coming up with suggestions for what we can plant in our sensory garden area.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

We have been learning all about ways that we can reduce waste in our environment - starting with our lunchboxes. It’s great to see so many waste free lunches in our school already! Our worm farm and compost bin are up and running again, so any fruit and vegetable scraps from lunchboxes can be recycled for our kitchen garden.

The junior classes have made posters to remind us of waste free alternatives to common lunchbox items. Senior students have been thinking about solutions to common lunchbox waste issues. Some tips that have been suggested so far are to use a lunchbox with dividers or compartments, or to use a lunch bag with small reusable containers or pouches. Buying in bulk and putting single servings into reusable containers is a great way to save on waste as well as money.

WASTE FREE LUNCH IDEAS

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Our focus for Term 1 is Invasion Games. These games require one team to use attacking skills and strategies to score and another team to use defending skills and strategies to stop the score. Many games come under the title of “Invasion Games”, basketball, netball, rugby, hockey, soccer, AFL and many more.

We have been focusing on modified class games practicing and improving our throwing and catching, so we can apply these skills in a game situation.

In a few weeks the students from Foundation to Year 2 will take part in an AFL clinic run by a coach from AFL Victoria. Please see the flyer below if your child is interested in participating in AFL outside of school. Community sport has many advantages; kids just need to give it a go! The students from Years 4-6 will also be participating in a teacher led unit focusing on the skills involved in AFL.
