Broken Hill North Public School

Newsletter No. 1 2021

From the Principal

Despite the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on our world, I trust everyone has had an enjoyable break from the routines of school life and have had the opportunity to recharge the batteries. We’re hoping 2021 sees a lessening of restrictions, with plenty of initiatives and programs on the agenda, as we strive for continuous improvement. I hope all our students, parents and staff members are ready to be part of our team and engage in our continuing journey in Paradise.

A very big welcome to Brad Lardner and Jessica Williams who will be making their debuts with us this year. Apart from these changes we are very fortunate to have the vast majority of staff with us again this year which is invaluable in moving forward in our planning and shared understanding of what we are trying to achieve.

As in the past two years we again have a focus theme for our school.

In 2019 it was – Be the best you can be ( BTBYCB )

In 2020 - Making a difference ( MAD ) was our focus

This year 2021 it’s going to be – Focus on improvement ( FOI )

As I mentioned to the staff and students it’s not that we’re going to forget BTBYCB and MAD, we’re just going to keep continuous improvement at the forefront of our thinking and actions this year.

Current guidelines re COVID-19:

COVID Safe Check-in

Basically, things haven’t changed a great deal in that parents and carers are still encouraged to remain outside the school grounds. That said, should you need to come into the school to purchase something or attend a scheduled meeting the following requirements are in place –

From Term 1 2021, all NSW public schools use the Service NSW COVID Safe Check-inExternal link.

Look for the COVID Safe QR code posters when you enter your child’s school. Be sure to sign in at the school administration building according to your school’s visitor guidelines. Parents and carers who are only dropping off and picking up students do not need to check in using the Service NSW QR code.

What’s changed

The following activities have been updated:

  • Schools can now turn on water fountains and bubblers for students to use.
  • Schools in the border regions can recommence swimming and other activities using venues in other states or territories if border requirements permit.
  • P&C meetings can continue.Field trips, excursions and camps to VIC, QLD and ACT can continue where interstate border requirements permit

Keep an eye on this space as things are likely to change week by week.

    How2Learn

One of our major and ongoing professional learning activities we have in place is HOW2Learn which is a research-based package aimed at increasing our teaching skills and improving outcomes for our students. Each week I will endeavour to propose aspects of mindsets and challenge you to take it into consideration in your role as parents / carers.

    Fixed Mindset

    I give up

    Change to

    Growth Mindset

I'll try some of the strategies

    I've learnt.

Which mindset is most likely to result in learning? Change the words, change the mindset!

    Library News

    Scholastic Book Club

Your child will have brought home Scholastic Book Club brochures. This will occur 2 -3 times per term. If you wish to purchase anything, fill in the form on the back, place correct money in an envelope or plastic zip lock bag and give this to your child’s class teacher or hand them in to Mrs Robertson in the library. Please return orders by Friday 19th February. Orders take approximately a week to arrive and be distributed. The school is given coupons and free picks to order resources for the library as a result of your participation.

    Borrowing

Students in K-2 must have a library bag/plastic bag in order to borrow. Students who have not as yet returned their library books from last year will be allowed to borrow but the book will stay in their classroom. Some classes opt for students to borrow books which remain in the classroom for them to read – K-6C, K-6R, K-6D and 3-6L. Please make arrangements with teachers of those 4 classes if you wish your child to bring home a library book each week.
