Kyneton High School

Newsletter

11 March 2021

From the Principal

In our last newsletter there was a call for nominations for the School Council.  The deadline for nominations to be due has been extended to Tuesday 16th March 2021.   Please contact the General Office if you would like a copy of the nomination form sent to you.  I encourage all parents to consider this excellent opportunity to be involved in the governance of the school.  We have an exciting period ahead of us, with the recent government grant of $10.991 million dollars delivering the next stage of capital works.  We are now in the planning phase and School Council plays a key role in this process.

We are currently preparing for our Pre-orientation Day coming up on Wednesday 24th March.  This is an annual event during which we host students in Grades 5 and 6 from our local “feeder” primary schools, of which there are 10.  These students will have the opportunity to get a taste of secondary schooling at Kyneton High School and to find out what makes this school such a great learning environment.  Year 12 students will continue with their usual on-site timetables and other year levels are not required at school.

Our first report cycle is also in its final stage of preparation and will be released to parents and carers via XUNO at the end of next week.  There will be Parent Teacher Interviews early in Term 2, on Tuesday 27th April.  Please do not hesitate, however, to contact teachers if there are any questions arising from the progress reports when they are received.

Congratulations to Ms Gunter and her Year 7 team for an enjoyable and successful Camp last week.  The camp itself enabled the students to immerse themselves in a team building environment in which they developed their confidence and built relationships with peers and teachers.

The circumstances of the gastro outbreak were unfortunate but we are pleased to report that we have had no further cases of gastro reported to the school by families to date, and the vast majority of students affected have already recovered. We would ask that parents/guardians monitor children for any gastro-like symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea). If your child presents with any of these symptoms, please keep them home from school and take them to the GP. DHHS guidelines say that students should be kept home for 48 hours after their symptoms have finished. If you are keeping your child home from school for this reason, it is important that you report this on the school absence line (call 54211100) and mention that they are displaying gastro symptoms. Many thanks to families affected for their great level of communication with the school on this matter.

Finally, my thanks to the Senior Team for the VCE and VCAL Information Evening which was held this week.  The feedback was that there was lots of very helpful information and it was wonderful for parents to be able to be able to come on-site and interact with staff in person.

YEAR 7 CAMP

Camp Notes

What a wonderful Year 7 Camp!

The weather wasn’t the warmest but that certainly didn’t stop our fantastic year 7s having a great time and participating in all the camp activities. It was inspiring to see so many students getting out of their comfort zones and having a real good go at things. It was also lovely to witness the encouragement towards peers and sense of camaraderie. Some of the activities were:

  • low ropes
  • water slide
  • flying fox
  • camp cooking
  • hut building
  • canoeing
  • archery
  • frisbee golf
  • beach volleyball

There was certainly something for everyone!

We also had marshmallows around the campfire and a lovely night walk!

I would like to thank our wonderful team of teachers and ES staff that attended the camp. Our students are so grateful for your commitment and willingness to give up so much of your own time to enable them to experience so many awesome activities.

I would also like to thank our wonderful cohort of Year 7s. We received many comments from the camp staff about their enthusiasm, politeness and organisation. It was an absolute pleasure to be on camp with you all.

Many new friendships were formed during camp and many memories were made. Please take the time to look through the abundance of photos!

Year 7 Camp Action!

So... what did the participants think?

THE BEST THINGS WERE...

... the canoeing, waterslide, water trampoline, volley ball, movie night and night walk.

  Hanging out with friends.

    Hut building.

I had fun, I was being safe but didn’t get lost.

Archery because I won and I’m the best.

  I didn’t hurt myself.

Spending time away from home.

Making friends with my room mates.

    All the activities.

Getting to know the teachers more.

Being in a cabin with fun people.

  Making new friends without trying.

Easily one of my favourite things was mountain boarding because when you went down the hill and the rush of the wind would blow against my face like a fan on a warm summer’s day and then leave me more eager to keep going down even faster than before.

Zipline was by far my favourite activity. You could reach over and touch the trees, you could feel the wind brushing against your face. It was a little short but really fun.

The night walk was my favourite activity. Billie and I laughed and chatted for the whole of it and we scared each other silly with myths of rakes and other creatures.

WHAT I LEARNT ABOUT MYSELF….

I have decent navigation skills.

There are lots more really nice Year 7s than I thought.

    I can’t swim.

I can push myself to do anything.

That I have a phobia of murky water.

My friend group is much larger and better than I realised.

It’s much easier to make friends than I thought.

    I can’t mountain board!

I tried everything, I tried my best and had a great time.

    I don’t like cooked marshmallows.

I hate cold water on my face.

I was less scared of heights than I thought.

  I get bored quickly.

    I don’t hate porridge, I just don’t like it!

I have good balance on low ropes.

    I’m braver than I thought.

I was resilient and kept trying.

I can fall asleep easily.

  I can do things I thought I couldn’t do.

    I love the outdoors.

That rolling down the hill five times is a bad idea!

WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY….

Next time I won’t be afraid.

  Bring warmer clothes.

Socialise more with my group members.

      Build a better hut.

Not stay up late because I was tired every morning.

      Have more showers.

Not put damper in the middle of the fire.

  Pack more stuff.

Pack less stuff.

Be more of a dare devil.

    Go down the waterslide more.

Donation to the Library

On Wednesday 10th March Lisa Chesters MP visited our Library to announce that she has donated $250 for book-buying. Some of our Book Review Team members were there to meet and speak with her, discussing favourite authors and genres. We now have the fun task of putting together a list of what we are going to spend the money on. Oliver, Freya, Keely and Eden are very excited and are already thinking of their wish-lists!

Have a look at our Instagram page to see the students with Lisa, and to see lots of other Library related posts @kynetonhslibrary

Macedon Ranges Youth Ambassador Program

About the program

The Macedon Ranges’ Youth Ambassador Program (MR YAP) is an annual program for young leaders connected to the Macedon Ranges, aged between 15 and 25. The Youth Ambassadors Program was established in 2011 and has been a critical driver and enabler of youth leadership in the region, with almost 100 students from years 11 and 12 completing the program. Youth Ambassadors gives a voice to young people in the Shire, empowering our next generation of leaders to tackle community issues that matter to them, and connecting the group to Council to make a genuine and sustainable difference in the Macedon Ranges.

The program involves 8-10 participants who want to make a genuine difference in the community; influencing decisions, leading projects, attending leadership activities, hosting events, driving the change they want to see.

Sex Smart Youth Survey

The Sex Smart Youth working group is made up of paid youth participants, and health and community organisations who work with young across the Macedon Ranges. The working group has co-designed the Sex Smart Youth survey with young people, which will be open from 1-31 March. We are aiming to find out what young people know, don’t know, wish they knew earlier and want to know more about in relation to sexual and reproductive health.

This survey is open to all 12-25 year-olds connected to the Macedon Ranges.  We hope that with strong engagement with the survey, we will have local data to support youth driven sexual and reproductive health projects, applications for funding in this space, and to inform actions of the Sex Smart Youth working group for 2021 and beyond.

Australian National Census 2021 - Field Officers & Managers Wanted

Adecco Recruitment has partnered with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to recruit 38,000 temporary employees in areas across the country. These employees will play an important role in helping people to lodge their Census forms for the Australian National Census 2021.

The Census provides valuable insights into the make-up of Australian society and is often the only source of data on small population groups and small geographic areas, which is why it is vital that we achieve the highest level of engagement and participation possible within your area.

See the fliers below for roles available, and to view our current vacancies, please visit: https://censusjobs.adecco.com.au/applications
