From the Leadership

Week 8 and 9 have come and gone and what an extremely busy time it has been. During Week 8 our Reception to Year 5 learners made a splash during their annual water awareness lessons at the Marion Aquatic Center. From all reports, our learners showed exceptional aquatic skills as well as displaying manners and school values during this time. Mind you, I did see some very very tired children at the end of the week testing our resilience value.

Three-way conferences started in earnest in Week 9 and have been well received. So, why do we have 3-way conferences here at St Leonards I hear you ask? One of our external school review directions from 2017 highlighted the need for our learners to have more say in their learning. These conferences are one way we provide opportunities for our learners to show their learning. I've been fortunate enough to move around the school during this time and must say that from our Reception right up to our Year 6-7 students I sensed an immense amount of pride in sharing their learning with the most important people of their lives. They should be commended on their efforts.

Congratulations must also go to our school lacrosse teams. They produced some fantastic performances at the recent SAPSAASA carnival at West Beach. Our learners were given this opportunity due to the hard work of our staff Melissa Barnes and Heather Pronk who were ably supported by teachers and a number of volunteers on the day. Well done St Leonards and our community.

Have a terrific Easter break, and can you believe it’s then not far until the end of Term 1, 2021.

Around the School

Wirraway - Year 5 Camp

The year fives were extremely lucky to go to Wirraway on camp. Our teachers put in a lot of work to organise it and we give a big thanks to them and our parent helpers for coming. We did extremely fun activities such as, horse riding, archery and an obstacle course (low ropes). We enjoyed doing horse shoe puzzles and little brain games at the end of the day. It was really fun and relaxing. We had a challenge where we needed to keep our dorms clean, those that scored the lowest with this had to do the dishes. It was a great bonding experience with our peers some, who we wouldn’t usually hang out with.

SAPSASA Sport

We have had a very successful sporting start to 2021. Our SAPSASA Swimming team brought home five medals, Emily achieved a silver in the 10 Girls 50m freestyle and silver in the 10 Girls fly, Lily K achieved a gold in the 12 Girls 4x50m relay and Maisy achieved a gold in the 13 Girls 50m back stroke and a bronze in the 13 Girls 50m fly (the most medals St Leonards have achieved in this competition). Congratulations Lily, Maisy and Emily.

Our Lacrosse teams did extremely well. The Year 4/5 Girls and Year 4/5 Boys teams finished 4th, the Year 6/7 Girls teams finished 2nd and 3rd and Our Year 6/7 Boys came 1st.

The St Leonards 6/7 Boys team have brought back the winners trophy for four consecutive years. Amazing result. Well done Elijah, Jack, Muhammad, Dexter, Archie and Alexander.

We wish Elijah C good luck as he takes part in the SAPSASA Softball competition this week. He was selected as part of the South West District Team.

Harmony Week

In the Library

We have a new friend in the Library, a monarch butterfly caterpillar. We will be watching it closely as it moves through its lifecycle and turns into a beautiful butterfly before we release it into the wild.

SLPS Kitchen Garden

It’s been a busy start to the year in the garden. Our summer crops have been harvested and we are incredibly grateful to Katrina James in the canteen for preserving and freezing our produce.  Already stored in the canteen freezer is grated zucchini, roasted beetroot, passionfruit, pesto and pasta sauce.

There is still plenty of autumn produce such as pears, apples and pumpkins to pick. This week we picked the first New Guinea Bean. One of our senior students, Alexander, saw it being grown in another garden and bought two plants for school. Not from New Guinea and not a bean, the New Guinea bean grows high up the basketball fence and produces a long, pale green fruit with white flesh.  It can be used in curries or stir fries, however we are keen to try it in a cake.

If you would like to learn more about the school garden, or keep updated, then please follow us on Facebook: SLPS Kitchen Garden.
