Principals Column

Welcome all families to Week 4

We see our Year 3 and 5 students sitting for NAPLAN this week. Here is a message to all our students we know will try their very best in these challenging tests and have done so during the weeks and months leading up to them.

I’d like you, your family, friends and teachers to remember that these tests are unable to measure all of what it is that makes you the valued person who you are. The people who have created these tests and those that mark them don’t know you as well as your teachers know you, to the extent to which I know you and certainly not the way your family and friends know you.

They don’t know that children at Scotts Head Public School speak a language other than English. They also don’t know that you may be a great singer and dancer or that you can play a musical instrument really well. They also don’t know how well you can draw beautiful pictures.

They don’t know that you have a sense of humour which can bring a smile to your friend’s faces and make them laugh or that they can rely upon you to support them when they need a kind and encouraging word. They wouldn’t know that you can create art, play all types of different sports and have interesting and enjoyable hobbies.

They also don’t know that you probably accept responsibility for taking care of your brothers or sisters from time to time. They don’t know that you have a beautiful coastal environment for your backyard with fascinating places where you have amazing experiences.

They don’t know how much you love spending time with your family and your close friends and they won’t know how much you are appreciated and loved by them.

You are trustworthy, kind and thoughtful and you try to do your best every day. Do they know that?

The NAPLAN test results give you some very specific information about yourself but it can’t say everything about who you are and what you have achieved.

I hope you are happy with your effort and receive results that they inspire you to do even better in literacy and numeracy. Just remember that there is so much more to describe who you are that can’t be shown in these scores. I am so proud of all Year 3 and 5 students this week who will be using their habits for learning to do their best during NAPLAN.

This week the tree removal works will begin onsite around the perimeter of the school grounds. The majority of the trees will remain and branches will be lopped from trees that encroach on the fence height of 2.1 metres. The tree works should continue for approximately three days and then the construction of the fence is scheduled to begin. It has been estimated that this process will take about 4 weeks. This will be a time of change around the borders of our school and our priority is keeping everyone safe, especially when entering or exiting school grounds.

Congratulations to both the boys and girls PSSA soccer teams who played with grit, determination and fabulous teamwork while displaying outstanding sportsperson ship at their matches in Toormina last Wednesday.

Scotts Head Public School students are once again stepping up to compete in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition and also Interschool Debating Rounds. Both public speaking and debating, promote confidence and increase higher order critical thinking skills. These opportunities are developing and enriching invaluable long term skills for our students, the ability to communicate confidently and articulately with an audience while expanding students’ knowledge of current affairs. These building blocks of public presentation are important both in and out of school and allows our students to become more conscious of their personal potential.  Thank you to Pak Chris for organising the logistics around these competitions.

Classroom Spotlight on Year 4/5

This term the 4/5 Minions have been enjoying the sun as much as possible. The students have worked tirelessly in the classroom preparing for NAPLAN and the CHECK-IN assessments. As a result of this terrific work ethic, the Minions have taken the opportunity to balance out their learning with some education in the sun. Engaging in weekly team building games, designed to encourage cooperation and teamwork, our school values are rapidly becoming a class specialty.

Over the course of this semester I have had the privilege of watching the 4/5 students begin to grow and develop into a wonderful group of student leaders. It is an incredible part of schooling to view, when a student who has felt shy or withdrawn, picks up a racket or a ball and starts to take the lead in a game. These moments are not only important for a growing young person, they are also inspirational to others who are working in the same environment.

Since day one positivity, encouragement and some incredibly fun moments have been shared daily among an extraordinary group of young people. I am excited to see how the 4/5 students not only overcome the challenges of the coming week, but go on to enjoy learning throughout the remainder of the year.

Debating - Kids Vs Teachers

Today, our two debating teams faced off against the teachers in two high-class debates. The first topic - All plastics should be banned - saw the Scotts Head Speakers (Tom, Cohen, Asher F and Payton) go head to head with the Scotts Head Complainers (Bu Bettina, Mrs. B, and Pak Karl) Both teams traded arguments and rebuttals, with the adjudicator narrowly awarding the debate to the kids' team.

Our second debate - Work experience should be part of the K - 6 curricula - saw the Scotts Head Chasers (Asher B, Wolfe, Santai and Peyton) lock horns with the Scotts Head Whingers (Mrs. C, Bu Deb & Pak Adam). It was another close debate, with both sides hitting home runs with their arguments and rebuttals. However, once again the kids' team was awarded the victory by the adjudicator.

It was a great preparation for our debaters who begin the debating season this Thursday with their first ever official school debate. The teams will debate against each other in Round One, then against Frederickton, South West Rocks, Aldavilla, and East Kempsey Public Schools. We wish them every success as they represent us in the tournament. Good luck, debaters. Our debaters in particular would like to thank the teachers for being part of today's debates, and giving them some practise and experience.

PSSA Interschool Soccer

On Wednesday 5 May, the Boys and Girls Soccer teams travelled to Toormina to play Bonville Public School in Round 2 of the NSW Public Schools' Knock-Out competition.

The girls match kicked off just after midday, with our team racing out to a 2-0 lead thanks to some slick teamwork and confident finishes from Freya. Bonville fought back and at half time the scores were level at 2-2. The second half was full of tension, as we came close to scoring a few times. At full-time the scores were still tied, so the game moved into extra time.

Scotts Head took the lead when Mirranya sent one past the keeper to go up 3-2. However, the match was not over. Bonville levelled the scores again, and since they had a corner and we didn't, they were awarded the victory. While the defeat was hard to swallow considering how hard our girls worked and how dominant they were for most of the match, they can hold their heads high. They represented all of us with fierce competitiveness and high-class sportsmanship.

The boys kicked off next and quickly had a 3-0 lead. Bonville pegged a goal back, but at half time we were up 5-1. The second half was played in similar fashion, with Scotts Head moving the score along to 10-2, before we called the game off as we had to race back to school. An extra mention to Noah, Wolfe and Payton who between them kicked the winning goals. The Boys team are awaiting to find out who their opponents will be in Round 3 of the Knock-Outs. Congratulations to everyone who was involved in the day.

COVID-19 and our School

With the cold and flu season approaching, we want to remind parents and carers that in accordance with advice from NSW Health, students should not attend school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

Please advise the school of your child’s absence on the first day they are away from school. You can do this by phone, email or via the Skoolbag app.

Students who are unwell with flu-like symptoms are strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.

Please provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school. You can simply email a screenshot of the text message you receive to the school: scottshead-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all visitors to the school, that they must sign the school sign-in sheet where they acknowledge that they will comply with the COVID-19 requirements for visitors, contractors and service providers each time they visit. Visitors must also check in using the Service NSW QR code.

We need your help with the School Banking program!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. The School Banking is processed at the same time each week and will only take a small amount of your time. Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they practice saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

As part of volunteering you are eligible to receive a Certificate of Attainment that details the activities that you are involved in. For example: cash handling, program facilitation, account reconciliation and more.

Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please contact the P&C on scottsheadpandc@hotmail.com.
