Weekly Prayer Reflection

Patience and Perseverance in the time of Covid

The super hero movies got it wrong.  Think of pandemic disaster movies you may have seen.  Disease threatens world, people drop dead in the streets, a small band of (criticised) scientists develop radical new antidote, hero, with small band of friends, utilise the antidote and save the world.  The first step is true of Covid, but the rest isn’t.  Scientists across the world had been working of vaccines for coronaviruses for well over a decade.  The appearance of Covid just sped up the process…and, largely, they co-operated with each other.  The application was not by superheros but by our public health system and the wide acceptance of public health practices by ordinary people – you and me.  We may criticise and question how things have been done, and we have often been exasperated but note this.  In terms of deaths per million, Australia is tracking 155th in the nations of the world*.  And this figure is made up of deaths both by Covid and with Covid.  We are doing better than we think.

It will be good to ponder this as your children return to school with a whole new set of inconvenient and sometimes difficult guidelines.

Where could we see God in all of this?  Beneath the surface, sustaining your patience, supporting our resilience.  What you are have gone through is not what you would have imagined of yourself two years ago.  This pandemic has not been one of drama.  It has been one of the discomfort of masks, the boredom of zoom sessions and the occasional difficult conversation with those who disagree with you.  Yet you have persevered, you have been patient.  God has been with you, and as this new school year begins with its own new discomforts, may you find God continuing to sustain you.

Loving God, you know the challenges we face in caring for our families with all the difficulties of Covid.  Send your gracious Spirit to sustain us in wisdom, patience and love.  We ask this in Jesus’ name, confident that you will hear us.

From the Principal

My first three days at St Joseph’s Wandal with students have been exceptional. The students have been very generous in their daily greetings and checking in to see if I’m okay. In the lead up to this week, the staff have caringly welcomed me and made my transition over the river a positive experience. I feel guided by the Holy Spirit and am grateful to serve this wonderful community.

Welcome to the beginning of the 2022 school year. Welcome back to returning families, and a special welcome to the new students, families, and staff members. We are excited that you have decided to join our school family.

We welcome to the St Joseph’s Wandal staff for 2022; Miss Bridget Fox (teacher), Mrs Anne Standen (teacher), Mr Ben Tapscott (teacher), Mrs Marguerite Warren (teacher), Mrs Melissa Zahnleiter (teacher) and Mrs Serentha Kajewski (teacher assistant). I trust they are going to have a successful year with us.

During the recent weeks, all staff have been working hard in preparation for the students return to learning. Over the last few days, there have been many exciting welcome back activities and lively discussions about what learning will happen throughout the year ahead.

I was invited to join Bishop Michael McCarthy and the principals of the other Rockhampton schools last week for a united Parish Pastoral Council meeting. His key question recently to parishioners was, “What church are you creating for the next generation of believers – one that is evangelising and welcoming and including for all, or one that has closed its doors?” As I reflect on this question, I believe our school motto, “To Love is to Serve”, shows we are invited to spread the word of God through our actions and words, and my vision is to foster an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to grow spiritually, academically and culturally.

As expected, COVID has arrived at the school. We are complying with the reporting and cleaning procedures expected in these circumstances. Your support in keeping children who have any contagious symptoms home and seeking testing for these is greatly appreciated. Please ensure your contact details are up to date, as families are required to collect students who develop symptoms throughout the school day as soon as possible.

Earlier this week you should have received a flyer from your year level teachers. For now, these will replace the annual Parent Information Sessions. Your flyer is a shortened version of the learning opportunities, assessment, homework, behaviour expectations and other general classroom matters. If your copy has been displaced or is stuck in the bottom of a school bag, copies have been uploaded to Skoolbag in the relevant year GROUPS.

This week, I am thankful for the virtue of cooperation. Cooperation invites partnership, trusts in the power of unity, creates enthusiasm when working for a common goal and lets me know I don’t have to work alone.

I am thankful for your cooperation. It brings me into community.

Prayer reflection

Jesus asks the fishermen in the Gospel to be messengers. He tells the fishermen that they will bring in people rather than fish.  We are called to be His messengers.  How can we be good messengers?

Year 6 responses:

We can set an example by being conscious of our words and actions, so that we can be good role models, like Jesus was.  Elsie

A messenger means to share information and encourage others, so we could do that by sharing our thoughts during prayer reflections in class.  Cooper M

Reflection:

What does it mean to be ‘called’?

How do you try to listen to the voice of God in your life?

Mission Goal as communicated through class newsletters

Upon reading your child's class newsletter, you may have noticed our 2022 School Mission Goal.

All learners will develop strategies to improve their social and emotional wellbeing.

One of the ways that teachers will support students to develop strategies to improve their social and emotional wellbeing is through the explicit teaching and learning experiences offered through "You Can Do It!"   I have attached a parent PDF which may provide futher support and strategies to utilise within the home.

Thought of the Week!

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day

This week in STEM classes Mrs Hutchinson and I have been discussing the ICT Code of Conduct Agreements with students.  This has fit in really well with Safer Internet Day which was yesterday (Tuesday).  Support to keep yourself and your child/ren safe online is available through the office of the e-Safety Commissioner.  These videos have been shared with students and provide important information.

Learner Dispositions

As we return to school we have begun to unpack those important dispositions that make us successful learners.

This week, many classes will be focusing on the disposition of ‘resilience’.

Being a resilient learner means that we are willing to accept new challenges, we celebrate the successes of ourselves and others, and don’t give up when things are difficult.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Year 6 Leadership Day and Badge Presentation

On Thursday 17 February all Year 6 students will participate in a servant leadership, reflection, and retreat day.  The aim of this retreat day is to develop teamwork skills, encourage students to identify their individual giftedness, hopes and potential to God, and ask God for help to use these gifts as best we can, so that we can help others.  As part of the retreat experience, students will be provided with a pizza lunch.

Our Year 6 Leaders will recieve their leadership badges at 2.15pm on Friday 18 February.  This event will take place over Zoom.

SCHOOL PROCESSES

Skoolbag

Skoolbag is the communication platform of preference. Notifications are posted to this app, as is the weekly newsletter, class letters and information gathering via EForms. The ‘GROUPS’ in Skoolbag have been updated for 2022. Check that you have requested access to your child’s year level.

Absent Students

Being aware of a student’s absence from school is a high priority. Our preference is that families use Parent Lounge to notify when a child will be away from school, even if for one day. Parent Lounge links directly with the classroom rollcall and informs the administration and teachers of each day’s absentees. The safety of our students is paramount, and this action on families behalf helps greatly. Parent Lounge has been added as a tile in the Skoolbag app for quick access.

Afternoon Pick-Up

New families will receive a laminated name sign to display in their vehicles. Please display these on either the dash of your car or on the passenger side visor. This will enable us to identify your cars in our busy pickup lines promptly. Please distribute these to the people who usually pick up your children. If you would like additional signs, please get in touch with the school office. Current families, if you require a replacement, please contact the office.

Please note, if your child is going home with someone other than a parent/caregiver this MUST be communicated to the office. Phone 49948230 or email sjwl@rok.catholic.edu.au.

Student Protection Contacts

Our Student Protection Contacts for 2022 are Rheanna Starr (APRE/Year 6), Janette McLennan (APC/STEM), Charmian Deed (School Counsellor), Stacey Franklin (Outside School Hours Care Co-ordinator) and me. These contacts are all available for assistance should you have and questions or concerns.
