Alawa Primary School Newsletter

Welcome to the Alawa Primary School weekly newsletter.

Principal Updates

What a week!

I would have to say that in my 7 years at Alawa I have not seen anything like the excitement that the Rainbow Run brought to the school - the students, the staff and the parents. The buzz built over the past few weeks and culminated in an absolutely fabulous afternoon last Friday. The smiles, laughs and joy on faces, the way people worked together and shared the opportunity as well as the excellent behaviour by our students all shone through.

Huge thanks to our planning team:

Ana Bernardino

Amanda Lane

Tamra Caruana

Jed Henderson

Saleena Allgood

Kate Hughes

Tammy Zairis

Steph Cockfield

Renae Shields

Lisa Harrop

Emma Connelly

And super huge thanks to all parents who came along  to help set up, pack up and run the tabloid events.

We could not have achieved this without you all.

Sandy Cartwright [Principal of the Best School in the Multiverse]

Honour Distinction Student: Principal for The Day

Last Friday we all recognised the exemplary behaviour, attitude and efforts of one very special young lady at our school - Ms Mikayla F.

Her dad Chris and big sister Shania [ex Alawa student] came along to Assembly to share this celebration and also popped back in later in the day for the Rainbow Run.

Mikayla spent time helping Ms Megan check the daily attendance, joined 5/6 Hammond morning tea, visited classrooms and handed out merits to students she noticed doing their best in classrooms and helped out at Muster.

Week 6 Alawa Honour Award Students: Over 50 children recognised!

5/6 Hammond deliver a thought provoking assembly [What do you believe in?] followed by an entertaining dance and then special morning tea with families!

Rainbow Run

Students: Do you read the newsletter?

If you are a student in Years 3-6 and you are reading this great job!

Shoot me an email to let me know how much money we raised for our school through the Rainbow Run last week.

Assistant Principal Updates

Welcome to week 7.

Laughter is the best medicine!!!

What a fantastic day we had last Friday at our rainbow run. It was wonderful to finish off our week with a day full of so much fun and laughter.... did you know….

It’s true: laughter is strong medicine. It draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Laughter takes you to a higher place where you can view the world from a more relaxed, positive, and joyful perspective.

Lawrence Robinson, Melinda Smith, M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D.

So let’s find opportunities to laugh more with our children.

Student Representative Council

Our SRC students will be meeting this week and responding to a letter from Year 2 Miss Ward’s class. They are concerned with the rubbish in the school. Stay tuned to hear their thoughts on what we may be able to do to make sure our wonderful school is a clean and safe environment.

Bike safety

Tomorrow is World Bicycle Day. Bicycling is healthy and enjoyable and an excellent early gross motor skill to learn. At Alawa we have quite a number of children who ride their bikes to school. Now that the dry season weather is getting closer it is a perfect time to encourage your children to ride to school. Just remember to ensure that all children wear a helmet and use the school crossings.

Try some of the activities in the Joyful June calendar and have a good laugh with your family.

Genevieve Donohue, [Assistant Principal]

Open letter to Student Representative Council

Dear Alawa Primary School SRC,

Year 2 Ward did an Emu Bob at the logs, near the shed and at the muster area. We found more than one bag of rubbish and a broken pipe.

We feel super sad that because there is a lot of rubbish around the school. As a school we need to clean up the rubbish. All of this rubbish can kill the animals that live around the school.

Our suggestion is to have a no plastic/ nude food school. This would decrease the amount of rubbish at Alawa Primary school.

Sincerely,

 Year 2 Ward

Sports Day

Students have been busy practicing events, games and chants for the upcoming Sports Day.  Our annual sports day will take place on Friday 11th June . The program for the days will be released later this week - we hope many parents / carers can come along and join us for the fun.

REMINDER: Any older sibling of school age should be at their own school and not at Alawa on the Friday.  All our Alawa children will come back into the middle area for recess and lunch - parents / carers are welcome to join them BUT they cannot stay outside the gates with their families during the breaks.

We are still in need of Sports day volunteers

If you are able to help on the day with either: marshalling, junior year rotations, primary year field events or set up and pack up

please email tamra.caruana@education.nt.gov.au or call 8997 7666.

Preschool news

Last week we were treated to a special visit from Sadie’s Mum Nicole. She was our first preschool parent guest to volunteer her time and share what she does for a job. Nicole talked to us about being a midwife and a nurse. Sadie was very proud to be her Mum’s assistant as she talked about how she helps deliver babies and takes care of needs of new Mums. The children made lots of comments about how they were once babies and were really engaged in the session. These sharing sessions are a wonderful opportunity for children to learn all about the different things they might like to do when they grow up. We certainly have many interesting and varied occupations, interests and talents amongst our preschool parents and look forward to more opportunities for preschool children to ‘show off’ their Mum or Dad.

We currently have a strong focus on strengthening fine motor skills within the preschool program. Children are doing a variety of activities to encourage the development of these skills. Through activities such as threading, ripping paper, punching holes, rolling plasticine and manipulating clothes pegs and tweezers children are helping to strengthen the muscles in their hands that are an integral component of writing readiness.

We hope you have a fantastic week,

Alice, Emma, Kelly and Flor  [Preschool Team]

Kitchen and Nutrition news

This week we have been doing a 3 ingredient challenge in Kitchen and have had some amazing results.

Here are a few pictures of the delicious inventions.

Tina Sullivan [Kitchen Teacher]

Sport in Schools program

We have been very busy with after school Sport In Schools this term. We have been doing volleyball on Wednesday’s with Coach Tre and he has been doing an amazing job keeping the kids engaged and learning new skills, it is the final one this week.

On Thursdays kids from all year levels have been doing Athletics with Coach Roger. He has been refining their running and jumping skills and the students attending have been enjoying working on their skills in a fun environment. I look forward to seeing the students put their knowledge to good use at Sports day in Week 8!

Lunch time sport starts up again this week with Table Tennis on Wednesdays with Coach David and Gymnastics on Thursdays with Coach Guy. Remember it is first in best dressed and gymnastics is always particularly popular so make sure you get in early.

Cheers,

Nellie [Sport in School coordinator]

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 6 Term 2: 94.11%

It is terrific having all our families back with us at school.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 6: Transition Lane with 99.05%!

In the lead for Term 2 we have Year 3 Hughes with 96.48%!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 56 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 6 Term 2!

The classes with the least lates for Week 6 were: Preschool Blue Group and Year 5/6 Hammond with 1 late arrival each!

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behavior in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day, as well as having a go at the weekly quiz. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points from the activity after recess on Friday where we count the students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 6 of Term 2 Finnis is ahead of Manton and Goyder.

Goyder is still in the lead for the year!

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each day we allocate class points during Muster time recognizing those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

In Week 6 Term 2, the class with the most points was... Year 2 Ward!

The winner for Weeks 4-6 is.... Year 2 Ward!!!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activates here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and are counted at the end of each week as each item earns a point for that house.

Not many deposit last week - come on, bring in your recyclables and support our Farm and the environment!

Persuasive Letters to Ms Cartwright - Just a few more to share this week.

Why we should have 3 day weekends by Hein Duc

In my opinion I think that it is time that we get a three day weekend and here are some reasons why.

My first reason is that if we have three day weekends we could have more time to rest and sleep. Because students and teachers have such a busy week that they are soo tired that they can’t concentrate.

My second reason is that if we have a three day weekend we could spend more time with our family and help out.

My last reason is that if we have three day weekends we would have more time to do homework.

Sooo this is why it’s important to have three day long weekends. Oh and can we have Saturday, Sunday and Monday off?

Why Alawa should not wear the school uniform by Asha Fulton

Dear Ms Cartwright I believe that the Alawa kids should not wear the school uniform. I have a few ressons why we should not wear our school uniforms. And here they are.

First reason is when kids get dressed it takes so long to find their school uniform and that is probably why kids are getting late.

Second reason is our own choice of clothes could be more comfortable and could be cleaner. Don’t go away because there is one more reason.

Reason 3 I hope you like it here is my astounding reason parents don’t have to wash as much.

So what do you say?

Please please please say yes and get rid of the school uniform and make it free dress.

Alawa English Team news

This term in Year 4/5 France we are looking at how to persuade an audience. We have looked at different persuasive pieces as well as different advertisements. This term we wrote a persuasive report on something we are passionate about as well as making an advertisement aimed at children. We have found that colours and juicy language draw in the reader/viewer.

Natalia: "This term in writing we have been learning how to persuade. I wrote a letter to Ms Cartwright to persuade to allow our class to have more recess. She was convinced so our class got extra time!"

Carla: "We have been doing persuasive I am doing it on getting a bearded dragon as owl class pet. My three reasons were it will make us more responsible and mature, it is low maintenance and does not have a very complex diet. I’m sure Mr France will be convinced."

Lachie: "This term we’ve been writing a persuasive piece to someone on why we should or shouldn’t have something e.g. why we should have a class pet or why we shouldn’t have a class pet. I tried to use as many rhetorical questions as I could, that is a question where the answer is obvious."

Defence School Mentor news

As you would all be aware we are heading into the peak exercise period of the year and we have many serving members with various upcoming courses. This can be a stressful time for both spouses and the children. A useful document that can make these times a little less stressful is the Member and Family Care Plan that DCO provides. It is a one stop document to record all of the household/family information that you may need when the serving member is away. For example insurances policy information, registration information, finances, wills, emergency contacts to name a few. If you would like a copy of the Family Care Plan please let me know and I will get one to you.

We have been busy I Defence Kids Club creating beautiful. Bright posters for our upcoming Sports Day. We will continue to work on our posters this week so if you child is interested please remind them to come along on a Thursday lunch time.

Please contact Brat Pack direct to secure your child’s place.—8927 2546 or thebratpack@bigpond.com
