Principal's Message

Dear Community

What a busy few weeks we have had as we head towards the end of Term 3! Last week we were lucky enough to enjoy some fabulous weather for our sports carnival. Thank you to all the parents who turned out to watch the events and cheer on our students. It was really lovely to be able to return to a traditional format for the day this year, as nothing beats the feel of a carnival atmosphere. A big thank you also to Mr Bacci and all the staff who worked hard to make it such a successful day, and also to the students whose outstanding behaviour and enthusiasm made it a day with many memorable and special moments. Finally, well done Challenger on a hard fought victory, winning the day by a very small margin of 4 points, ahead of Parmelia, who were closely followed by Stirling.

NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and 5 students should have received their NAPLAN reports this week. These reports give an indication of where your child sits in aspects of literacy and numeracy in comparison with students across Australia. Please remember that this is just a snapshot of their capabilities and is just one aspect of how students are assessed as we strive to develop the whole-child at Scarborough Primary School. If you have any queries about your child’s performance or the test in general please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or their classroom teacher.

Public School Review

Last week we received the officially endorsed report of our Public School Review which was held earlier this term. It is full of wonderful commendations, acknowledging our amazing staff and also maps out some of the directions that the school will be taking as we move forward through our next exciting period of growth. You can find a copy of the report on our school website.

Before and After School

Unfortunately, a few incidents that have happened outside of school hours in the last few weeks make another reminder of before and after school procedures necessary.

  • Classroom doors are opened for students at 8:35am. Before 8:35am, school staff are busy preparing for the day and engaging in meetings so there is no classroom supervision for students prior to this time.
  • Any students on school site without parents should wait at the colourful tables near the undercover area where they will be supervised from around 8:20am.
  • There should be no parents or students on site before 8:20am without an appointment.
  • After school, all parents and students should have left the school site by 3:20pm. We are still having problems with students remaining on or returning to the school site unsupervised, some becoming involved in inappropriate and unsafe activities. Please do not assume that there is a duty of care or supervision for your children outside of school hours just because it is a school site. Allowing your child to play on the school site unsupervised is no different than allowing them to spend time at Scarborough Beach or a local park by themselves.
  • For safety reasons, scooters, bikes and skateboards should not be ridden on school site at drop off and pick up time. Students should dismount once they enter school grounds and walk their wheels to their parking spots in our fantastic new bike and scooter racks.

Engaging in the above processes helps to keep our school a safe and positive environment for all of our students, so we thank you in advance.

School Board

Last week, our board met for their second meeting of Term 3. We focussed on two main areas:

  • Review of the Homework Policy: A survey is currently being designed to give parents an opportunity for input before the policy is redrafted. A link for this will be distributed over Skoolbag in Week 10.
  • Updated Learning from Home Plan: As per Department requirements, the school is finalising a Learning from Home plan in the event of a short term lockdown (1-2 weeks). The plan allows for a flexible learning approach to best cater for our diverse range of families. Guidelines for the plan will be available on the website next week. It is something we are very much hoping we won’t need to use, but is necessary to have ready as situations regarding COVID can change at a moment’s notice.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to call or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

Wrapper Free Wednesday

Scarborough Primary School is dedicated to promote change within the school and will be introducing Wrapper Free Wednesday throughout Term 4 to encourage healthy eating and teach waste minimisation. Students are encouraged to bring food without packaging. All waste will be put back into students’ lunchboxes and taken home.

Now is great time to start thinking about what goes into your child’s lunchbox and considering healthy alternatives.

Tips for parents packing wrapper free lunches:

Scarborough Primary School is dedicated to promote change within the school and will be introducing Wrapper Free Wednesday throughout Term 4 to encourage healthy eating and teach waste minimisation. Students are encouraged to bring food without packaging. All waste will be put back into students’ lunchboxes and taken home.

      • Let children help make their own lunches. Pack lunches the night before to avoid morning rush.
      • Purchase a lunchbox with different compartments to separate food.
      • Discuss with your child what they like to eat and how much. Bin audits in schools show large quantities of unopened packaged foods are being thrown away.
      • Cut up fruit and vegetables and pack them in reusable containers so that children can eat some and save some for later.
      • Encourage your children to bring home uneaten food to eat later.
      • Buy in bulk to prevent individua packaging and use reusable containers to store.
      • Avoid buying items in packaging that cannot be resealed
      • If lunchboxes have plastic, encourage children to bring home soft plastics to be taken to REDcycle centres. To find out more, please visit https://www.redcycle.net.au/.

Our school is growing and our current small team needs extra support in order to keep these services going. So please check your diary and sign up to help!

We also welcome extended family members to be part of our community, so if you can’t help, perhaps your parents can (-:
