From the Principal

Dear Parents and Community Members,

As we enter the mid-way part of Term 3 I am reminded of the many achievements of our children. Last week I was lucky enough to take 17 children to the SACPSSA Cross Country Carnival, we were blessed with a beautiful day. I was extremely impressed with the attitudes and perseverance of each of the runners. A very special mention to Italica (2/3R) who placed 15th overall in a race that include over 150 runners. This week we have two Year 6 Basketball Teams competing in the SAPSSASA Knockout competition and our Yr 6 girls are into the next round of the SAPSSASA Knockout Netball competition. Good Luck to all.

Whilst there have been many celebrations of the children being active this term, I am continually in awe of the learning that the children are engaging in throughout the school. I was in the Pre School room last week and I saw the children being wonderful nurses and doctors to poor Sue who was in need of bandaging (she played a very convincing patient). The Year 1 classes took their learning about Minibeasts outside with an excursion to Morialta Conversation Park, on the hunt for some real-life Beasts! Finally, our Year 5/6 classes have been working extra hard improving their mathematical thinking.

This week we celebrate the wonders of literature in BOOK WEEK. This is one of those special occasions in every child’s primary schooling when we marvel at the power of books. This year there has been the added incentive with the Golden Ticket Challenge. I have been asked every time I leave my office for clues to the location of the tickets, I love seeing the excitement in the children’s faces as they go on the hunt! A very special thank you to Mrs Kostiw for organising another exceptional celebration.

Thank you to all of our families who continue to ensure they are following the COVID guidelines when entering the school. A reminder that masks must be worn on school grounds and during pick up and drop off times, parents are asked to remain on the oval/court areas and socially distance.

A big ‘thank you’ to our parents who continue to follow the parking laws during pick up and drop off times in the surrounding streets. As I mentioned in a Skoolbag post last week, we have seen an increase in the presence of Council parking inspectors. We certainly understand and appreciate the frustration when the streets become congested during the peak times. We still have a number of parents who are illegally parking, leaving their cars for the ‘quick run in’ to the school to collect their child. Whilst it may only be for a short time, it means others are not able to move safely through the streets and our neighbours are unable to exit their homes. Please follow the instructions of our Kiss and Go areas and take note of the No-Standing and No-Parking areas.

Finally, as this is my last newsletter before I head back to my permanent position at St Martin de Porres School, I would like to take the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to each one of you. My time at St Joseph’s whilst short in time has been big in impact. I have been blessed to have had the chance to lead this wonderful community.

God Bless
Ben

Welcome to Preschool

A very special welcome to Arya who started at Pre-School last week.

Book Week Celebrations

On Wednesday a search for golden tickets in the sand inspired imaginative play, creativity and the exploration of ideas. Treasure maps were drawn, and pirate hats were created as children searched for golden tickets they had made.

Incursion: RAA Street Smart

The Preschoolers participated in Street Smart Preschool, a road safety incursion hosted by the RAA that teaches the importance of keeping safe and to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK and hold an adult’s hand when crossing roads. The children participated enthusiastically and were gifted with a beautiful picture book called YIPPEE that reinforces road safety messages.

Preschool visits Playgroup

Last Friday the Preschoolers were very fortunate to be invited to participate in the new Playgroup programme LET’S MOVE. Held in the school hall from 10 until 11 am it features a selection of fun activities that enable the children to utilise their gross and fine motor skills.

Thankyou Maria A and Catherine B for facilitating a great, fun session.
