St John the Baptist Ferntree Gully Newsletter

Letter from the Principal

Tuesday May 11th 2021

Dear Families

Yesterday we met with our School Reviewer for the final time. Gaynor handed down her official report that is based on the conversations she had with students, parents, staff, our leadership team and our regional Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Team. I am very pleased to share the following findings with you after a very rigorous review process. I would also like to extend a message of thanks to Gaynor for her expertise, wisdom and the professional way in which she conducted our review process. We feel very confident that we have great direction for the next 4 years of our school improvement process. As a leadership team we are very committed to the school improvement process with the children at the centre of all we do.

Reviewer Findings

The school’s mission and vision is…

  • Student centred, focused on formation of the whole child and community relationships

  • Well understood by all staff

  • Embedded across all areas of the school’s operation

  • Underpinned by a whole school professional learning plan that is research and data informed, and driven by the school’s strategic needs

  • Enacted where students’ learning and wellbeing drive all decision-making

St John the Baptist has a high performing and collaborative leadership team that is:

  • Committed to ongoing professional learning and growth

  • Innovative  and open to new ideas

  • Effective and has carefully planned change management practices that take account of the school’s context, the needs of teachers and students and opportunities associated with system level programs, networks and professional learning

  • Regularly present in learning and teaching areas, modelling good practice, team teaching, offering feedback, mentoring colleagues and interacting with students who are known by name

  • Built on high levels of trust that enable robust professional conversations

St John the Baptist has a positive staff climate where:

  • High levels of collective efficacy and quality learning and teaching are supported

  • High levels of trust, encouragement, feedback and mentoring exist

  • The school is developing teacher capacity, largely through professional learning teams and by sharing knowledge, skills and understandings through action research and data analysis, and by sharing insights gained through participation in system level initiatives

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

This week and next week our students in Year 3 & Year 5 will be assessed in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by our teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

NAPLAN is not an event we want students to be worried about, so preparation is completed as part of regular class work. At St John the Baptist we believe the best way to prepare students for NAPLAN is to teach them well each and every day.

Results are sent to the school which highlight individual results, school trends over several years, how the school performed compared to other schools in the state and how much the children have ‘grown' between NAPLAN tests in Years 3 and 5.

From the information, we identify students strengths and areas of difficulty so programs can be developed to assist those children. We identify common strengths and challenges across the school to inform class and whole school planning. Target areas are identified for improvement in literacy and numeracy so we are constantly adapting our teaching to suit the needs of our students.

Our goal as a school this year is to continue to build upon our capacity as a staff to collect meaningful evidence that informs planning of future learning opportunities for our students. NAPLAN forms only one part of that meaningful evidence collection alongside teacher observations, pre and post tests, conversations with students, formal testing opportunities etc. It is important that we continue to assess students in multiple ways in order to give them the best opportunities to showcase their knowledge, skills and understandings.
