SPORTS REPORT

What an incredible two terms of sport we have had. With most of our PSSA knockout teams finished for the year, we have just a few teams left to compete and some fun gala days ahead. To finish off the term here is a brief recap of what has been.

Swimming

The year started with our school Swimming Carnival. With almost 200 students attending it was a great chance for the students to come in their house colours and cheer cheer cheer! It was a successful day that saw 21 students heading to the Manning Zone Swimming Carnival to compete against other local schools. At the Zone Carnival the day was started on a high with the junior boys relay team progressing to the Hunter Swimming Carnival along with two other students for individual events later in the day.

Rugby League

Early in Term 1 students were given the chance to tryout for the Manning Rugby League team. Our boys played well with four students progressing to the second round and Taj Rodgers eventually progressing to the final team that played in Tamworth last week.

We have also had our Under 10s and Open teams compete in the Manning All Schools Gala Day, a non-progressive one day competition against local public and private schools. Both teams played some great football and all 28 students had fun getting the chance to play with and against students they don’t normally get the chance to.

Our PSSA knockout team travelled to Salamander Bay to compete in the Classic Shield – a one day event designed to complete four rounds of the progressive competition in one day. Our team was unfortunately knocked out in the first round, however finished the day with a great consolation game winning 28-10.

Netball

Three girls were selected from the school to show their skills and tryout for the Manning team. Tyler Knoke was successful in progressing to the final selection stage however missed being one of the final few selected. The coach that took the girls contacted our school to specifically  commend how well Tyler did and how well she represented the Manning and Wingham Public.

Our school team started their PSSA knockout with a good win against Harrington which meant they had to face a very tough Warners Bay side who ended our run for this year. It was a great experience for our girls and they all finished the game with big smiles regardless of the result.

Touch Football

In Term 1 we had six students tryout for the zone touch football team. Both Taj Rodgers and Kye Welsh progressed to make the team and competed late in Term 2. The boys both enjoyed the experience.

Our boys touch football team has started their PSSA knockout competition with two good wins beating Cundletown Public School and Wingham Brush Public School. Next term will see both the boys and girls teams verse Gloucester Public School.

Basketball

The boys and girls basketball teams travelled to Saxby’s Stadium in Taree to play against Fortser Public School. It was A tough competition and our students all enjoyed themselves despite being knocked out of the competition.

Soccer

We had a great start to both the boys and girls PSSA knockout competitions with both of our teams winning their first two rounds against Taree West Public School and Wingham Brush Public School. This meant both teams had to travel to Branxton where they faced tougher competition. Unfortunately, both teams were unable to progress, however, our students showed incredible sportsmanship and represented our school well.

In the individual tryouts for the Hunter team, Indie Lucas progressed to the final stage. Indie had a great day scoring goals and winning all her games, but unfortunately did not get selected.

Cricket

With only eleven students putting their name down for the school cricket team we were close to having to withdraw from the competition before it got started. Fortunately, there were a couple of boys who had never played before that were willing and excited to give it a go.

The boys had convincing wins in their first two games against Gloucester Public School and Muswellbrook Public School. This meant the draw then took us to Denman. After the game was postponed twice we were finally able to play this week. Our boys played well but a very consistent Denman side were the better team on the day and ended our hopes of progressing any further this year.

Cross Country

The school Cross Country was held at the start of Term 2 and followed closely by the Manning Zone Carnival. Our long distance runners performed incredibly well and four students qualified for the Hunter Cross Country.

Athletics Carnival

To finish off our busy term of sport we held the 8-12yr old Athletics Carnival last week. Students came to school in their house colours and there were some amazing chants led by our house captains. Everyone competed well and it was incredible to see them supporting each other throughout the day even when competing against each other. Age Champions will be announced at the Week 10 Assembly. The Zone Athletics Carnival is scheduled for Friday 23rd July.
