The Randwick Buzz

Term 3, Week 10 2021

From the Principal

We come to the end of a challenging term for parents, students and staff but do so looking forward to the plan for students to return to school in Term 4. Thank you for the work being put in to keep children learning and thank you to the supportive comments shared by so many families, particularly about the "fun' activities that have been inserted over the last couple of weeks.

I know that opinions on how we have organised the learning have been many and varied however we have tried to steer a middle road in providing structures, supporting high needs children and ensuring that children have been able to access the programs equally, either in learning packs or online.  Just as it has been tough for many families to support learning from home, it has been equally challenging for the school to meet the various needs and situations remotely. I hope we can all be kind and acknowledge the limitations of the situation but appreciate that each of us is trying to do our best. Watching this little clip about the contagious nature of kindness may be good for your families to start the holidays: youtube kindness boomerang clip

Communities are doing well in being vaccinated to help our community open up and stay comparatively safe, so please keep this up for the good of your family and friends. One family in our community has already experienced a COVID infection and while thankfully they are improving, it has not been a pleasant experience. Fortunately they had no contact with school prior to or during the infectious period. We wish them well and a speedy recovery.

NAPLAN reports for Years 3 and 5 have now been received at the school. These will be sent home with children in attendance on Thursday or may be picked up from the office prior to the holidays or early next term. In accord with the state wide analysis, there has not been a significant decline in learning either at state level or the school level as a result of last year's lock down. Year 3 have shown excellent results and both years have improved in Writing on previous performance.

We also wish to congratulate Trent Gardiner who has gained the substantive position as Deputy Principal from his current relieving role. Trent has very quickly become an integral part of our school in the past 14 weeks.  We also congratulate Alex Blake, Year 5 teacher, who has proceeded on maternity leave and welcome Connie Hallas, her replacement teacher. Finally we have farewelled our Instructional Leader, Annabel Hughes Clapp, who is also going on maternity leave and sadly for us moving with her family to set up home in Orange. Annabel has supported and provided challenging lessons for all children but especially for our high achieving students. Laura Mclean, a long time staff member and currently the part time Business Manager is also leaving us after 10 years, to move to the South Coast with her family. Best wishes to all of these staff members.

Finally please try to have a relaxing holiday and take advantage of the beautiful surroundings and open spaces to spend outdoors with your family.

Regards

Susan Allen, Principal

Return to school roadmap for Term 4

In Term 4, where stay-at-home rules are still in place but high community vaccination and low transmission conditions are met, students will return to school in a staggered approach for prioritised cohorts, with no mingling or on-site activities.

Order of return under staggered approach where we remain under stay-at-home rules

Students will return to face-to-face learning with NSW Health-approved COVID-safe Level 3 plus settings on school sites in the following order:

From 25 October 2021: Kindergarten and Year 1

From 1 November 2021: Years 2, 6 and 11

From 8 November 2021: Years 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

The return to school roadmap is subject to change depending on new information expected through the Public Health Order and additional advice from NSW Health. You can stay up to date with the most recent advice on our Advice for families page.

Recent feedback:

Homework and daily uploading is challenging for some families, are there options that could be provided for more flexibility?

We have asked for the Literacy and Numeracy tasks to be submitted as these are the core learning for the day. Where families are having difficulties, please contact the class teacher for assistance. The morning teaching Zoom sessions are optional and provided to support face to face learning and engage children.

Greater advance notice of weekly work schedule would help some families better plan their weeks.

Based on this feedback, we have begun sending the packs out on Friday afternoon. This will continue in Term 4. Watch out for the Week 1 packs on Friday 1st October.

Could you make the Kindergarten handwriting practice ruled lines on the printouts easier to see?

The handwriting practice lines are downloaded directly from a website and are clear on the digital version. It may be that in printing, it loses some quality. The lines are intended to be faint as they act only as a guide to assist with letter size. Children can practice their handwriting on any lined paper, using 4 lines as a guide for head and tail letters.

Clearer labeling of tasks would be helpful in Year 1 to align Seesaw, scheduling and worksheets.

Tasks on Seesaw are labelled with the week & day of completion and the subject. Worksheets in the weekly learning pack are numbered to assist with printing and organising and labelled with the day and subject.

Special events (e.g Cinderella) were well received and are great a keeping kids occupied.

Thank you!

From the P&C

P&C Annual General Meeting on 15 November

The Randwick P&C provides a gateway for members of the school community to contribute to the enhancement and development of Randwick Public School.

Key activities include: fundraising for improved grounds and facilities; providing a voice for parents and carers; and organisation of working bees.

Our 15 November Annual General Meeting, is the meeting at which we elect the P&C representatives and set priorities for how funds raised by the P&C are spent. To be eligible to vote on these matters, you must be a financial member of the P&C. To become a financial member of the P&C is only a gold coin donation and this can be paid online here https://www.randwickpublicpandc.com/what-we-do

Nominating to be a part of the P&C

The P&C committee consists of the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary and up to two other representatives. All positions will be up for election at the upcoming Annual General Meeting. If you are interested in nominating for one of these positions or finding out more, please send an email to randwick.pc.secretary@gmail.com and one of the existing P&C executive committee will follow up with you.

The P&C is keen to have new members, particularly from parents with kids who are newer to the school to continue bringing a diverse perspective to the P&C or those of you who have been wanting to be more a part of the school.

Some of our longer serving members of the P&C, notably the P&C President, Noelle and Treasurer, Naomi will not be renominating themselves for next year. They will be dearly missed and we cannot thank them enough for their time and commitment.

Why join the P&C from Noelle - P&C President

Randwick is a wonderful school and I have had the privilege of seeing up close what sets Randwick apart and have enjoyed the opportunity to be part of that ongoing growth and development.

The P&C plays a significant role supporting the school with sport, playground enhancements and we create opportunities for community and engagement.

What have I enjoyed in my years of involvement...so many things:

- Watching teams of enthusiastic volunteers bring amazing events to fruition.

- Seeing playground equipment, COLAs, robots, iPads, classroom resources purchased with money that we have raised as a community.

- Being inspired by teacher candidates so keen to work at our school as I’ve sat on interview panels.

- I’ve felt privileged to have opportunity to represent RPS families and do my best to keep Randwick wonderful and ensure people feel heard as part of the community.

After 8 years with P&C, 1 year as Secretary and 3 years as President it is time to pass the baton. It’s time for new ideas, new energy and new skills.

Uniform Shop Update

Details on uniform shop opening arrangements will be provided at the start of Term 4 once there is clarity around Department of Education rules about how the P&C can operate the uniform shop as this requires access to the school grounds. We appreciate that there may be a lot of children needing uniforms as they have outgrown last summer’s uniform. We will do what we can to assist when we have further information.

Incoming kindy parents are being communicated with and will be looked after in plenty of time for the commencement of school.
