'Parents and carers in Greater Sydney must keep children – across primary and secondary school – at home unless they need to be at school. Schools (including outside of school hours care) are open for any child that needs it.'

We want to thank all the families who are supporting our community by keeping their children at home, learning from home, to minimise movement in the community. As always, our school will be open with minimal supervision to support those students who cannot be educated from home.

***ACTION REQUIRED***

***Learning From Home/Supervision Survey*** Please complete short survey, if you haven't already done so?...thank you!

Minimal staff supervision on-site at school will continue, as well as one unit of work for all students.

To assist us in organising sufficient limited supervision on-site at school, please complete a separate survey for each child:

https://forms.gle/srMVaUT7T6K98hmh7

Important information for students requiring onsite supervision:

  • DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD/REN TO SCHOOL IF UNWELL - child/ren showing any mild COVID/flu-like symptoms will be sent home until a negative COVID test result is produced, as well as NO SYMPTOMS displayed. The safety and wellbeing of all students and staff, at all times, is paramount.
  • Supervising staff are UNABLE TO FACILITATE NON-ESSENTIAL LEARNING at school ie online music lesson with Directions in Music

Thank you for your continued understanding and support. Stay safe everyone!

We are so grateful to our fabulous community for your ongoing support of our students, staff and school!

Your tokens of appreciation, although so heartwarming and generous, especially during this time, please know that this kind gesture is neither necessary, nor expected. Staff are very appreciative of your generosity, however, as per the DoE's 'Gifts, Benefits and Hospitality Procedures', the token of appreciation must adhere to the following:

  • Value - up to $50 ONLY per student
  • NO cash or negotiable instruments such as cash vouchers, 'pre-paid cash' and 'EFTPOS' cards, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), shares or money orders
  • Gift cards are acceptable as a gift of gratitude, as they are considered non-cash vouchers that must be used as specific retailers and cannot be converted to cash eg David Jones, Bunnings, Tara Dennis - a gift card cannot exceed $50 per student
  • Alcohol - MUST NOT exceed a value of $50

Thanks so much to the P and C for the lovely SASS Recognition Week goodies, as well as to the lovely comments you added to the digital cards...all so much appreciated!

Thanks to Juliet K's family for the lovely delivery this week!

From the Principal's Desk...

Apologies to the families that missed my message in last week's issue of Pigeon Post, regarding 'Wellbeing Wednesday', as well as the link to the Wellbeing grid.

We are conscious of ensuring that information is disseminated to all our families. This includes via the Pigeon Post, as well as SkoolBag.

We are also mindful of not bombarding you with numerous SkoolBag notifications. In hindsight, this probably should also have been sent out as a separate post.

Apologies again if you were inconvenienced and unprepared for 'Wellbeing Wednesday'.

Thanks again Maria and team.' Cath

***Moving forward, and in light of the survey results and comments, although not all suggestions can be taken into account, we have made some adjustments to 'Wellbeing Wednesday'. Next week, the day will commence with the morning Zoom, an English task and a maths task (regular learning/timetable, to ensure outcomes are being met without spreading across the 4 remaining days of the week). For the first 3 full weeks of remote learning next term, 'Wellbeing Wednesday' will morph into 'Fun Friday', with the same format as proposed for next week's Wednesday. 'Fun Friday' will finish on Friday 22 October. Please note: While we will be providing English and maths tasks in the morning, please feel free to take the entire day, if you wish to, as a family.***

Did you miss the 'Practical Parenting in a Pandemic' webinar with Maggie Dent? Don't worry, we have access to the recording for the next 4 weeks!

'Thanks for the invitation for Maggie Dent’s seminar today. I have listened many podcasts and read many information during the lockdown. I find this seminar is the most helpful. Hopefully we could get the link for the record and eBook she mentioned in the webinar. Thanks again BPS for continuously supporting our students learning and well-being as well as parents and the community.' Cindy

'Regardless of how long it will take, this pandemic will end. Everyone is being impacted, inconvenienced, challenged, has lost something of value and had their lives shaken to the core.' (Maggie Dent)

Digital Eye Strain...

Signs of digital eye strain...

Digital eye strain can cause many symptoms, including:

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Dry eye
  • Eye discomfort
  • Eye fatigue
  • Eye itching
  • Eye redness
  • Eye tearing
  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Most of these symptoms are short-term (temporary). They often lessen or go away when you stop using your computer or device. But symptoms may continue for a longer time.

The severity of symptoms may vary depending on:

  • How long you have been using the computer or digital device
  • Your underlying eye problems
  • Other factors that cause digital eye strain.
Symptoms may get worse if you don't resolve the problem.

Using a computer or digital device for a long time can also lead to other symptoms. This includes neck and shoulder pain. This is often due to poor alignment and posture when using the computer or digital device. Some healthcare providers call these symptoms part of digital eye strain as well.

Digital eye strain tips for all of us...

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Balmain’s ‘Slice of Heaven’ World Photography Day Competition

SLICE OF HEAVEN...entries close 4pm Friday 17 September

As you are aware, this week has brought further changes to the ‘stay at home’ rules, with all LGAs restricting movement to within 5 km of our home.

If we take ‘home’ as being Balmain Public School, the NSW website providing support indicates the 5 km radius we must remain within:

https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/rules/affected-area#mapmap-local-government-areas-of-concern

In light of 19 August being World Photography Day, we are providing an opportunity for all our budding photographers, both students and parents/carers, to showcase their talents, take a break from learning and/or working from home, and discover the 5 km ‘slice of heaven’ we are in!

When submitting a photo, please provide the address of the photo and a cryptic clue as to the whereabouts of the photo.

The ‘Top 40’ photos will be shared with our community (format yet to be finalised), with the intention of being inspired by those photos, to walk to the various points and take your own photos, with the objective of using a different/new ‘lens’ to focus in on the beauty of our local area.

We are looking for photos from students and parents/carers alike.

You have until 4pm on Friday 17 September, to submit your entry, a snippet of paradise, via balmainps@gmail.com Att: Slice of Heaven Competition.

Please include:

  • Name of photographer
  • Address of photo
  • Cryptic clue

Photos do not need to be an entire scene – they could be wildlife, vegetation, or an impression/emotion.

Have fun out there!

*Abbotsford PS has kindly shared this idea with us

SPOTLIGHT ON...

5/6 YIN & YANG!!!!!

During ProjectNEST, Stage 3 students have been learning to understand, interpret and experiment with the use of imagery in imaginative texts. Students have explored visual literacy techniques within picture books, as well as created imagery through the use of descriptive and figurative language. For Mini-Outcome #1, students have been creating their own picture books by composing an original fable with accompanying illustrations. Here are some works in progress, by 5/6Y:

Excerpt from ‘The Caterpillar and the Bees’ by Kathy...

On one lovely spring morning, in a lovely garden somewhere in North America a caterpillar egg started to split open on top of leaves of a milkweed plant.

Crack! Crack, Crack.

Out popped a small caterpillar covered with black, green and white stripes, gazing at the view of a spectacular looking garden.

If the whole world looked like this stunning garden, everyone who lived in it would probably be beautiful! He thought to himself gazing at the tulips, roses and sunflowers flourishing in the sunlight.

I hope I will make really nice friends.

With that thought, the caterpillar decided to find some friends that shared the same home. He climbed off his milkweed plant and scrambled on top of a beautiful rose next to the milkweed. On top of the rose, he spied, just a few flowers away he saw a group of bees, buzzing around busily.

I should ask them if they want to be my friends! Thought the caterpillar excitedly to himself as he crawled closer to the bees.

Excerpt from ‘The Wolf and The Panda’ by Lester...

There once lived a wolf who was extremely indolent and unappreciative, and needed an assistant who was a panda, to help him accumulate food, find shelter and even protect Wolf when he is in a vulnerable position. However, Panda wasn’t given enough reward for his good deeds, it was mostly just tiny morsels and leftovers from what Wolf had eaten. Panda wanted to quit, but Wolf was the only animal accepting his help. Wolf, though, would then realise that he would be as dejected as a cloud because he was about to lose his slave…

Winter was near, and Wolf was going to be even more famished. However, this would mean Wolf would have to reward the Panda even more. Wolf thought and thought, and suddenly had a lightbulb above his head. He decided to flatter Panda to give him additional food, but was going to give him the same amount of leftovers.

Excerpt from ‘The Dog, the Giraffe and the Fox’ by Skye...

A dog, who was very greedy and hungry, had caught a large fish, after a long hour of waiting by the river.

“This fish will be so good,” he thought greedily, “and I am so hungry I could eat all the fish in the river!”

Since he was tired and hungry, he decided to eat the fish straight away, and opened his jaws to take a large bite when…

Snatch! A giraffe had stolen it and put it high on his back so the dog wouldn’t get to it.

The giraffe had seen a small, starving fox over the river, and thought the dog should be nice and share it with her.

“Hello dog,” he said politely, “Did you know there is a hungry fox over there? Would you mind sharing your large fish with her? She would be very happy if you did.”

“Why would I do that? Give my fish back!” demanded the displeased dog.

“Think smarter, dog,” counselled the clever giraffe. “You know, really, that you can’t eat the whole fish, and sharing it means no leftover meat to attract annoying ants!”
