Principals Column

Welcome all families to Week 3!

This week finds our beautiful school humming along to the tune of engaging learning activities and opportunities where our students are using the SHPS learning habits Engage, Focus Collaborate and Reflect to become effective in the process of learning both in and out of the classroom.

Our Year 3 and 5 students will complete NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy on 11, 12 and 13 May.

The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.  For more parent/carer information go to https://nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/resources/naplan-online-information-brochure-for-parents-and-carers.pdf

Good luck to the PSSA Girls and Boys Soccer teams who head to Toormina today to represent their school out on the field and thank you to those parents who could assist with transporting of students.

Also out on the cross country track on Friday will be those runners competing at the Zone Cross Country event demonstrating grit and determination once again.

The P&C are holding a Mother’s Day Stall on Thursday 6 May for students to purchase gifts for the special people in their lives which will be set up outside the canteen where students will be able to purchase at least one gift prices ranging from between $3 - $8.

The new SHPS fence construction is due to begin on 10 May. The school will be re-purposing some fencing panels within the school grounds but would like to spread the word to anyone who would need these galvanised fencing panels. The fence panels can also be used horizontally to create shelving. Please contact the school with any interest in purchase of fence panels.

It is also exciting to announce that we are permitted to hold the Spring Fair this year which is a wonderful community event highly anticipated on the school calendar.

Save the date: Scotts Head Public School Spring Fair 15 October 4-7pm

2D Shapes in Year 1/2

The 1/2 class have been having fun consolidating their knowledge and understanding of 2D shapes this week.  Timed rounds of shape matching, followed by some close games of Bingo saw the class erupting in shouts of BINGO!

Did you know that a Rhombus has 4 sides and 4 vertices? 1/2 sure do! We have quite a few "shape-masters" in the making - awesome stuff 1/2!

North Coast Netball Trials

On Thursday, Matilda and Mirranya travelled to Woolgoolga to trial for the North Coast representative netball team. We knew they would display our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Teamwork as they competed with and against the best primary school netball players on the Mid North Coast. It was wonderful to receive the following email from the MNC selector.

Pak Chris

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to let you know that the girls were fabulous yesterday. They played their hearts out and I was super proud of their efforts and their sportsmanship. Mirranya was selected and Tilly made it into the possibles and probables.

Awesome girls!!

Bakso Bakso!

Pak Mur and his team of helpers did an outstanding job of cooking and serving Indonesian lunch for the whole school on Weds 29th April. Students and staff enjoyed authentic “bakso” (meatball and noodle soup) and “lumpia” (spring rolls). Before eating, all the students gathered in the COLA to hear 1/2 students perform the song “Abang Tukang Bakso”. This was another fantastic event in our school which showcased not only Indonesian language and culture but also the amazing spirit of the SHPS team. A big “terima kasih” to Toben’s mum Olivia for helping to prepare the meatballs the day before with Pak Karl and Pak Mur. Enak!! (Tasty!!)
