Week 9          Learning from home

Week 10        Stay tuned

Friday 17 September – Last day of Term 3

Help keep our school community safe

To keep all of our school community safe, it is important that we see a playground like the first picture rather than the second.

This week our school has seen an increase in students attending school. While we understand that there can be many reasons for this, the Department of Education advises that if students can be kept at home, they should be.

I need to remind all our families that there is minimal supervision on site at our school for those students who cannot be educated at home, for example if their parent or carer is an essential worker. All students and families will be supported with
learning from home materials and resources.

If you are working from home, and your child is able to be educated from home, please keep them at home.

I want to thank all the families who have continued to support our community by keeping their children at home to minimise movement in the community. Get in touch with your teacher to discuss any additional needs for your child or family to support you to continue learning from home.

We are aware that some families are beginning to struggle with continuing to support their children with their learning at home. It is important to remember that you must support yourself and your family through this time, and this is more necessary than completing all of their school learning. While you may not be a trained teacher, you have always been and always will be your child’s first teacher. Do not stress over the specific things they may not be learning at the moment but understand and enjoy the importance of your connection with your child at the moment. It is okay that they are not doing some of the learning from school. The connection you are making now is something that will be with them long after this lockdown is ended and your child will remember it.

Please see the attached Parent update letter for more detailed information about the current status of Learning from Home.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

All stages will be using the same stimulus, with differentiated questions and activities. If you are having challenges with the online learning process, please message the teachers on ClassDojo, we are all here to help you with any issues.

Learning from Home Paper Packs

BHNPS learning from home paper packs can be collected from the Chapple Street front gate from 9.30am-10.30am on Monday 6 September.

Due to the fact that teachers have filled the weekly paper packs with lots of learning activities, our students have been taking longer than a week to complete them. This is perfectly fine, and we ask you to only collect a new pack when you have completed the learning you already have at home.

During Week 10 (next week) if we are still Learning from Home, we ask that if you need a pack that you contact the school to request a pack. We will only be making packs up as needed. When you get to the school gate, please give the office a call and we will bring your pack out to you. Thank you for your cooperation in this.

Each day our teachers will put these packs at the gate, unless there are poor weather conditions. Please remember to continue to stay COVID safe, wear a mask and keep a distance of at least 1.5 m from other parents collecting packs. Please message your child’s classroom teacher if you are having difficulties collecting your packs, or if the content of the pack is too challenging for your child.

As we began last week, there will be a box to collect finished learning from students to get feedback from their teacher. Just put the child’s name and class on the front of the learning pack and put it in the box next to the Chapple Street front gate nearest the Front Office.

Learning From Home

K F

This week K F have been spending time both inside and outside. Lucas started a veggie garden with his family, Catalina learnt to use a drawing program on the computer, Ashton managed to find a pentagon for maths after much searching and Embalea has been completing her home learning pack.

Mrs Fisher has been baking, trying out some new recipes with her family, the one in the picture is frozen yoghurt and blueberry slice. She is also being watched over by her cat whenever she is on the computer. Meanwhile our class sunflowers have been growing away happily in the window box at school.

Mrs Fisher

K-1 M

K-1 M are missing school and being able to see each other. I miss having K-1 M in our classroom and understand how hard working and learning from home is.

Self-care has been a focus for K/1M. Rhemy swam in her pool, Dean collected flowers, Aaron painted a rock and James played superheros and villians with his brother. To look after my own wellbeing, I spend time playing with my girls, have a coffee when the house is quiet and watch The Block.

It was Teacher Aide Appreciation Week last week and to thank Mrs D'Ettorre for all the support and care she gives to K-1 M, Ina made her a card. Ina cannot wait to give the card to Mrs D'Ettorre when we return to school.

Miss Miller

1 H

Week 8 was a great one in 1 H!

We celebrated Ace's 7th birthday ?. The students wished him a Happy Birthday on ClassDojo, which made his day. He also got to eat some delicious pancakes for breakfast ?

Some of the students drew pictures and wrote letters/stories for the residents at one of our local nursing homes. Thank you to those students for spreading some sunshine ☀️

I saw lots of creativity, effort and smiles in the photos that were sent to me this week. Thanks so much to the parents who are doing their best to support the students in 1H during this lockdown. You are all super stars.

I've been looking after myself by going for daily walks with my husband and dog. It's a great time to get some fresh air, have screen-free time and chat about how our day has been ??‍♀️???

Continue to stay safe, look after yourself and hopefully I'll see you all soon!

Mrs Hellyer

2 M

Another week in lockdown and thre is still plenty of family time and learning going on. Students in 2 M this week have been doing lots of physical activity, making shadow art, practising their sounds and letter formations, creating 3D astronauts, cooking, helping around the house, completing the online learning component and even joining the under the sea excursion - how cool! Most of all they have been focusing on their wellbeing. Miss Mullen has enjoyed daily walks to get out of the house, online shopping and watching lots of NRL games. Mrs Morgan and I miss you all and we hope that we can all be together again real soon.

Thank you all for staying home and keeping yourselves safe!

Miss Mullen

2-3 P

This week in 2-3 P we’ve been focusing on our wellbeing. We are figuring out the right way for our families to conquer home learning and taking time to recharge with activities that bring us joy! Ms Penfold is very proud of us all and is still pleased to hear about all the different ways we’re helping our families out.

Lockdown can be tricky for teachers too, so Ms Penfold tries to reach out to her friends and family when she can. Last week she got to crash a wedding on the Gold Coast while on a FaceTime to her friends! This weekend her family did a ‘virtual’ 10km Warrior Run for Father’s Day with the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. Our dog Bunji even got a Strava account to join in too!

Miss Penfold

K-6 C

K-6 C continue to do an amazing job with learning at home, even though most of us miss the routine of school and seeing each other.  We have been focusing on wellbeing this week and many families have been going for walks and enjoying some extra craft activities.  Andrew decided to overcome a fear on his evening walk, standing near this VERY BIG horse.  Jhamin has been doing some craft, and as he likes to do, has done it his own way.

I miss you so much K-6 C and can't wait to see you all again.

Miss Cutting

K-6 R

In K-6 R this week we have looked at different animals and written sentences about what we learnt. We have also started to participate in some of our Sounds-Write lessons again with students watching videos posted by Miss Ross on ClassDojo each day and completing the activities. Well done K-6 R! K-6 R have made Miss Ross so proud with the resilience they continue to show during this very difficult time. Also, a big shout out to all the amazing parents and carers for everything you are doing to support the students during this challenging time. You are all superstars! With this week’s focus being on wellbeing, it is a good time to remember to do something that makes you happy and helps you to feel positive each day. To keep myself feeling positive, I enjoy going outside and getting some fresh air with my dog each day. It has been nice to just sit out in the sun this week and complete my learning activities. I look forward to hearing about how you all focus on your wellbeing during home learning this week.

Miss Ross

K-6 D

It was great to see and hear of the great learning happening with K-6D this week. The students have been keeping themselves busy over the past week. Alona has been particularly helpful with her family, she helped unpack the groceries, baked some choc chip banana muffins and received her prize for great learning at the end of the week. Amazing job everyone.

I have also looked after my well-being this week by doing a couple of paintings. I did two paintings of tigers that throughout the week. I hope everyone keeps safe and wish for another great week ahead.

Mr Dewberry :)

3-6 L

Sue and I are missing 3-6 L so much! Learning from home is very different, so it’s important to make sure we are looking after our well-being. I have been looking after my well-being by spending time with my family outdoors, going on walks and trying my hand at some gardening. I have loved hearing about what you have been doing to look after your families and yourselves during this tough time.

Some well-being and creativity highlights from 3-6 L this week; Harvey going out for some fresh air and exercise with his family, Eliza adding some artistic designs to a rock to donate to the RFS and Brycen using his creativity to create some wacky shadow art.

Keep staying safe and healthy, being kind and trying your best each day and remember that we are here for you.

Mr Lardner

3-4 K

These week 3-4 K students have continued with home learning. There has been 3D art made for the nursing homes, learning about ‘closest’ numbers, growing crystals and even some learning packs have been returned. What a brilliant effort!!! Students also focussed on making sure they were helping around home, getting exercise in the fresh air, and taking some time to spend as a family.

A huge thank you to the families for supporting your children through this challenging time. I can’t wait to see all of 3-4 K back together again soon.

Miss Grieve

3-4 S

Look at Jenna having some fun outside on the trampoline for her brain break, and Scarlett and Eli building a plane. Axel and Scarlett enjoyed playing a game of Monopoly, for their wellbeing. These are all great ways to have some time out from learning. I hope you are enjoying your learning from home activities and remember, try to do something fun or something that makes you happy during the day.

Miss Stoltenberg

4-5 M

This week has seen a lot of creativity from the students in 4-5 M.  It has also seen them log into Google Classroom for the first time and continue their home learning journey online.   This is a journey for all of us and one that we are doing together.

Some watched the virtual Paper Folding lesson presented by Questacon.  The paper glider that they taught was extremely cool and I can see many enjoying this lesson when we get back to school.   Others have been busy cooking, painting and coding.  4-5 M welcomed two baby chickens this week.  We will have to put more eggs in the incubator when we return to school.

It is extremely pleasing to receive so many messages and emails from students each day.  It really does bring joy to my heart.  Thank you, to the parents who are sending in photos of your wonderful children and the different activities that they are doing.

5-6 G

In 5-6 G this week students have been completing a variety of activities. Jye has been practising his culinary skills and has baked a footy cake, iced it in chocolate and added the touch of sprinkles. It looks delicious. Other students have kept themselves busy with online learning, A-Z Vocabulary and Study Ladder. If anyone needs their passwords let me know. I must say I am extremely proud of everyone for staying home and staying safe. Let's keep it up and hopefully we will soon be back in the classroom.

Mrs. Gaiter

5-6 VW

This week it was great to hear from students in 5/6VW who were doing different things for their wellbeing. Deklin was out in the garden, creating new beds and making his Nan cups of tea. Good on you Deklin. Kasey was in the garden, weeding and helping his Mum out, and Lilly was playing with her new staffy pup, Princess.

It is vitally important to take time away from your learning, away from the computer and to get outside in the sun to do something active. Keep up your learning, stay safe and hopefully we will see you all soon.

Mrs. VW

What are the teachers doing?

Teachers are having Wellbeing Breaks at home too. This week I asked the teachers to send photographs for what new learning, or wellbeing activities they are trying while at home. Mrs VW has been learning to play the ukulele, Miss Grieve has been baking cinnamon scrolls, Mrs Hellyer and her husband take their dog for a walk. Poor Miss Ross tells us her dog won’t leave her alone and is always by her side. Mr Dewberry has been busy painting tigers and Ms Miller is having time with her girls and catching up on the Block.

If you see your teacher out and about walking their dog, or buying a coffee, wave out and say hello. We miss you all so very much.

Try these Wellbeing Activities from Miss Pilkington

Supporting the wellbeing of children and young people is an important part of what students, families and schools do every day. It is especially important to ensure that children and young people’s wellbeing is looked after in times of uncertainty and stress. Supporting wellbeing not only helps children and young people to feel happier and less anxious, it will also help them to have positive interactions with the rest of the family and to learn more effectively.

Kindergarten 2022

Thank you so much to those families who have sorted this out already. It is important that enrolment for our 2022 Kindergarten students gets sorted sooner than later so we can prepare our transition plans for next term. Let’s not leave this to the last minute. If you have siblings already at school this should be the easiest thing you do this week. Come in and grab the forms and get the ball rolling. Should you need assistance with the paperwork we’re more than willing to help out.

How2Learn

One of our major and ongoing professional learning activities that we have in place is HOW2Learn which is a research-based package aimed at increasing our teaching skills and improving outcomes for our students. Each week I will endeavour to propose aspects of mindsets and challenge you to take it into consideration in your role as parents / carers.

Fixed Mindset

“This is too hard!”

Change to

Growth Mindset

“This may take some time and effort.”

Which mindset is most likely to result in learning? Change the words, change the mindset!
