Letter from the Principal

Dear Families

How fortunate were we to experience last weekend’s weather. There are so many signs of spring in the air with the beautiful blossom and wattle adorning our trees. I spent much of my weekend walking and observing all the joys of nature. I was fortunate to see kookaburras, rosellas and blue wrens amongst the beautiful spring daffodils. I get excited at this time of the year when the days start to get longer. I hope you are finding time to reach out into nature. We are required to spend so much time on screens at the moment that it is essential that we take the time to stop and appreciate all that nature has to share with us by getting outside.

My only other outing over the weekend was to our local supermarket. I was served by this gentle young girl and I asked her about how she was finding online learning. This quietly spoken girl said she was in Year 12 and was finding motivation hard. She said she felt like people had forgotten them a bit. Last year there was so much emphasis on the Year 12s that perhaps our Year 11s (now our Year 12s) were left to manage all the complexities that lockdown brings to education on their own. Her comment that she felt a ‘little forgotten’ caused me to stop and reflect. Who else is feeling ‘forgotten’ in our society or perhaps even in our own small community? I hope and pray that we all take the time to reach out and think of others. How is this experience for others? What can I do to make a difference to their health and wellbeing? Simple actions of a phone call, a smile, a thankyou, a question asking are you okay can make all the difference.

First Eucharist

The celebration of First Eucharist Masses scheduled for this week have been postponed. As soon as Government and Archdiocese restrictions allow we will reschedule the Masses and communicate alternative dates and times with families.

We thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding and pray that we are all able to share our children’s First Eucharist as soon as practical.

Term 3 Calendar Events

We had many events scheduled for the children to experience and enjoy for the remainder of Term 3. At this stage we will keep events such as our Year 3/4 school camp, Years 3-6 water safety sessions, sporting events with gymnastics clinics and softball clinics on our calendar. Each event is becoming a week by week proposition with schools getting very little lead time as to what restrictions will look like. Please be reassured we will be as flexible and agile as possible within the guidelines we are required to follow. If events can go ahead we will do everything that is humanly possible to ensure that they do. We will continue to keep you informed. Of course if we are required to cancel events such as the camp all camp levies will be refunded to families.

QR Code Check-In and Face Masks

Everyone over the age of 12 years of age (with the exception of our enrolled students) is required to wear a face mask both inside and outside as per Victorian Government COVID restrictions.

If you are entering any school buildings it is a Victorian Government mandate that you check in via our QR code. We are limiting access to buildings for our families until we have further easing of restrictions. We are also asking families not to gather before or after school. Whilst this is hard as we enjoy being together hopefully our caution will keep everyone in our community safe and hopefully able to gather once more in the not too distant future. Thankyou for supporting us to implement our COVID safe plan by observing these protocols.

Stay home when unwell

The most important action our school community can take to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 is to ensure that any unwell staff and students remain at home and get tested, even with the mildest of symptoms.

Students with underlying conditions (such as hay fever or asthma)

If a student has persistent symptoms due to an underlying condition such as hay fever or asthma, the student should still be tested for COVID-19 if they develop symptoms that are different to or worse than their usual symptoms. Students whose symptoms are clearly typical for their underlying condition can continue to attend school. Parents/carers should also consider getting a medical certificate from the child’s treating GP to confirm that it is safe for them to attend school with persistent symptoms that may overlap with some of the symptoms of COVID-19 such as cough or runny nose.

Young children with persistent mild symptoms

For younger children (in Prep to Year 2) who have had a negative COVID-19 test that was taken after they developed symptoms, the decision about return to school should be made in conjunction with the child’s treating GP. If the GP is satisfied the child has recovered from their acute illness, is otherwise well and does not need a repeat COVID-19 test, the child can return even if they are not completely free of symptoms. Any worsening of symptoms will require review and repeat COVID-19 testing, if considered appropriate by the doctor. Students with a negative COVID-19 test whose symptoms have completely resolved do not need a medical certificate to return to school.
