News from the Principal

Welcome to the first newsletter for 2021. Welcome back to students and families returning to Long Street. I would also like to welcome new to school students and their families. We will try extremely hard to ensure your stay with us is the very best it can be.

Congratulations to all staff on the highly dedicated and professional way they have returned to school this year.

Our 2 main learning goals in our site improvement plan are reading and writing. We have a number of measures and programs in place to demonstrate growth and progress for every student in every class. Staff will deliver specific programs targeting elements of reading during Read, Write, Inc and Literacy blocks. To ensure we provide the very best possibility for growth for your child it is extremely important that students attend as many days as they can during the year. Attendance along with solid teaching programs will provide the very best opportunity and challenge for your child’s development. Our main goal this year is to fight hard to ensure this occurs.

I would like to formally welcome Miss Hart to our school for 2021. Miss Hart is teaching a year 4/5 class in Room 10. We wish her every success at Long Street.

This year’s Governing Council will be elected at the upcoming AGM. Once this date is finalised I will announce it through a school bulletin. I welcome you to elect to become a member on this year’s council. Council meets on 2 occasions per term for approximately 2 hours. Nomination forms will be placed at the front office in the next few weeks.

Senior Leader Literacy

Welcome back to our returning families and a big welcome to all of our new students, families and staff.  We have had a great start to the year and look forward to a fantastic 2021.

We are continuing with Read, Write, Inc for Rooms 1-6 this year and look forward to seeing our students improve further with their Phonics understanding in R-3.  We will be following the Literacy and Language programs in Years 3-7 this year also.  These programs will start in Week 4, with our Fresh Start Intervention program starting in Week 6.

We have had World of Maths on site this week, with Gary exposing our students to a lot of Math activities over Thursday and Friday.  Our students enjoyed this program when it came in 2018 and have again enjoyed learning about Math concepts through hands-on activities.

What's Happening in ........

Room 13?

This term Room 13 have started the year with an enthusiastic approach and great mindsets. We have worked together to complete a range of team building and problem solving activities which have allowed us to get to know each other better. We have taken the time to create a range of personal and academic goals to help keep us focused for the year ahead. We individually chose a positive trait that we would like to focus on this term and created a piece of art using repetition to emphasise this word. We then discussed why we have chosen our traits and how we plan on being successful. In literacy we have been working on creating imaginative texts with strong characters and setting by using figurative language to make the story more engaging for the reader.
