Term 1 Week 6

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

On Monday of this week we held our Student Representative Council (SRC) Induction Assembly. Once again it was great to have parents and caregivers present to share this experience with us. Names and classes of our SRC leaders are below. Congratulations to them! The SRC representatives have the role of communicating the student voice to the teaching and executive staff, and I have complete faith in them to uphold the values of the school as they engage in this duty.  I would also like to acknowledge Ms Wilson and Mrs Devereaux who will coordinate the SRC this year.

3-Way Interviews

Starting on Monday 8 March, teachers will commence 3-way interviews with parents and carers. Interviews will be of 10 minutes duration and will be held in your child’s classroom. If you would prefer to have a phone interview, that can also be arranged by contacting the office. During the interviews, students will be sharing their achievements and developing learning goals. Notes will go home today outlining how to log onto the SENTRAL system to book these interviews. If you remember your SENTRAL credentials from the last set of interviews you will be able to use these to log into the booking system. When entering the school for your interview, please use the front entrance and sign in using the Service NSW QR code. It is also important that all visitors to the school observe social distancing protocols including maintaining 1.5 metres distancing. Our teachers are looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s learning goals for 2021.

Skoolbag App

It has come to the school’s attention that some members of the school community are not receiving Skoolbag alerts. I assure the community that these alerts are being sent. If you find that you are not receiving alerts, it might be advantageous to delete the Skoolbag app from your device and reinstall it. In most cases, this appears to rectify the issue.

Primary Dance Workshops

An opportunity exists for students in Years 2, 3 and 4 to attend Dance Workshops in Sydney. Students who have expressed an interest in this opportunity will bring home a note today with further details. If your child is interested and didn’t receive a note, please contact the office.

Dates, Times & Venue: Years 2-3   Thursday 25 March 2021 | 10.00am-1.00pm (arrival 9.45am) Year 4       Friday 26 March 2021     | 10.00am-2.00pm (arrival 9.45am)

Ethics Classes at Lithgow Public School

Ethics classes are available as an option in NSW public primary schools during the Special Religious Education/Special Education in Ethics (SRE/SEE or ‘scripture’) timeslot. Primary Ethics is the charity authorised by the Department of Education to create curriculum and train volunteers to deliver ethics classes. The ethics curriculum is available for children from Kindergarten through to Year 6, however, we will initially trial it for students in Stage 3 only.

Ethics classes can commence at Lithgow Public School for students in Years 5 and 6 if there is sufficient interest and enough volunteers to deliver the program.

A note will be distributed to Stage 3 students on Monday 8 March that will seek expressions of interest to attend Ethics classes. There is also additional information regarding Primary Ethics in this newsletter. If your child is in Stage 3, and you would like your child to participate in Ethics classes, please fill in the expression of interest note and return it to your child’s class teacher by Friday 12 March.

 The Importance of School Attendance

When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

Parents and carers can help foster positive attendance habits by:

  • helping their child learn the importance of punctuality and routine
  • ensuring their child arrives on time from the start of the school day, ready to participate in learning
  • reducing disruption to learning where possible, by planning any necessary appointments outside of school time
  • promptly communicating any absence to the school (within 7 days of the first day of any absence)
  • working with the school to encourage and support regular attendance.

Information for parents provides further clarification about compulsory school attendance

Have a great fortnight,

Kinder Kangaroos are Kind!

This week the Kangaroos have been talking about how to be kind. We read Have You Filled A Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud. This beautiful story explores how simple acts of kindness, known as bucket filling actions within the book, can bring joy to those around you, and to yourself.

The Kangaroos brainstormed ways that we can be bucket fillers, and practiced in our classroom. We even made some crowns to show off all the ways we know how to help fill other people’s buckets.

Gumtrees - All About Me!

The Gumtrees have settled in beautifully this year and this Term we are working on a unit called "All about Me." Students have been participating in a variety of activities including some wonderful artwork. We made these amazing self portraits. We had to watch and listen carefully to learn how to draw a portrait of ourselves in pencil which we then coloured in using oil pastels. Once this was complete we chose a background colour using watercolours. We are certain we can see some similarities to ourselves in each one. Don't they look amazing?

Stage Two News

Hartley Creating Art!

Stage two are exploring the elements of art, looking how the use of colour, line and pattern in our artworks, and how the choices we make when creating artworks help to tell the story and share our feelings. We have started off our art unit studying Bronwyn Bancroft's artworks, she is an amazing Australian artist who brings together a combination of modern art with traditional Aboriginal styles. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading her story books and discussing her unique and creative artworks. We took the time to create some recreations of her animal arts, bringing together her use of bright and vibrant colours, patterns and simple shapes to create some fantastic artworks.

Stage Three News

Chifley Creating Disaster

It has been busy start to Term 1 in the Chifley classroom. We are currently learning about Natural Disasters, their effect on our planet and strategies to minimise their impact. Students have been busy individually researching a natural disaster and explaining it through writing, building, acting, technology, music and art.

Harry Potter Fan Club

In Harry Potter Club we have been doing trivia about Harry Potter.  There are a few different sub-topics. Each Hogwarts house is represented by one person and if you answer correctly the most you will receive a prize from the treasure box and points go towards you house.  It is really fun and we would love more people to join.

WE ARE A NUT FREE SCHOOL

At Lithgow Public School we have several students who suffer severe allergic reactions if exposed to peanuts.  We ask that you please avoid packing food products for your child that contain nuts of any type including nut spreads and any kind of chocolates spread (Nutella).  We thank you for your assistance in this matter.
