Principal's Report

Dear Families and Friends of St Anthony’s School,

COVID Vaccination requirements – In the next week we will begin to ask all our volunteers to provide evidence of their COVID vaccination to ensure we are compliant with the government mandatory vaccination policy for education settings.

Athletics Carnival – It was a privilege to journey with our Athletics team to Athletics SA Stadium on Wednesday 3rd Nov. To experience determination, good sport-personship  and pride in others victory spoke so highly of our amazing St Anthony’s students.

PE Week – The week was a great celebration of sport which included whole school fitness, Year 6 vs Teachers game, Year 2 Come and Try Day excursion,  presentation of Be Active Challenge medals, lunch time games and mentoring moments activities.

Mentoring Moments – You might see Mentoring moments in our weekly notes and wondered what it is all about. Each house group meets up together every Friday afternoon. They start with a story or small video connected with the weekly topic. Year 6 leaders then guide each smaller mentoring group made up of Reception to Year 5 students through some questions and an activity. The session finishes with a dance, song or small sport activity. This term weekly topics have included humour and laughter, Catholic Missions, Sport, Kindness and Joy.

Pulse Survey – Each term all of our students and all students in Catholic Schools complete a check in survey. As a staff we explore the data from these surveys to help us identify needs, monitor student wellbeing and seek ways to further improve the learning and wellbeing of our students. Of course we don’t wait until week 5 of each term to do this, in many ways this is done daily, throughout the day in formal and informal ways. I love my daily chat to student while doing duty or visiting rooms. I thank all of the staff who work to support and wrap around our students.

Data Release – Each term our classroom teachers are provided with release time to explore data to help inform and improve student learning outcomes. Last week staff worked together to analyse the information from Maths and English “tests” that are completed each year to track progress and growth. And WOW there was some growth in a number of students. Many areas to celebrate and of course data that points out need for further focus and work. I thank the teachers for their dedication to seeking improvement and growth in learning for all students.

Year 6 Induction – Over the last couple of weeks our Yr. 6 students have begun their transition to high school with visits to their Secondary Schools. It is always a sad moment when we begin to say farewell and yet one of great pride when you hear about their experiences and how “ready” they are. We look forward to celebrating the graduation of our Year 6 class of 2021 and a number of key events including Carols Night, End of Year Mass, Final Assembly and the Graduation Prayer Service and Dinner.

Little Ants and Parent Induction – Over the last 2 terms we have welcomed our Little Ants each week as a apart of their transition into St Anthony’s. What an amazing journey it has been. Today we officially welcomed our new families with a morning of answering questions, welcoming them and celebrating in prayer the graduation of our Little Ants. Thank you to Mrs Travers for her dedicated love to our Little Ants and all the staff who support the program. In a special way we thank the Year 3 buddies who have met up each week to play with, support and make welcome out little ants.

Christ the King – This feast day celebrated this Sunday is our New Years Eve… it is the last Sunday of this Liturgical year. So we look back on the year that has been and consider how we have brought the message of Jesus to life through our words and actions. We look at how we have contributed to building up the Kingdom of God and followed the ways of our king Jesus… May we always follow our compassionate and loving king!

Best wishes from Stuart

Yesterday we said goodbye to Sheridan Todonai who has served the St Anthony's community with great care and enthusiasm for over 8 years.  We thank her for her dedicated service and care for our students at OSHC and in the Front Office. Remembrance Day Liturgy

Our school community was honoured to have SGT Adrian Dale (Father of Patrick in Reception) and Mr Peter Meaney from St Anthony of Padua Parish to come to speak and pray with us on November 11th. The Liturgy was led by some Year 6 students who spoke with reverence and respect. It was a moment to come together, to reflect and ponder on those lives which were lost and to pray for those who continue to protect us in Australia and overseas. Each class made a poppy wreath and laid this during reflective prayer.

We shall remember them.

Class Masses

Each week a class of students go to Mass with the parishioners from St Anthony of Padua Church. The students make cards for the community and hand these out before Mass. These are well received and it is a wonderful way for the children to reach out and connect. Year 1 students, recently attended Mass, and then when they returned to class, reflected on what they saw, heard and wondered. It is humbling to be part of these and I love to witness the engaging conversations which come from these moments of wonder. Fr Philip's postbox is also important for the students. Each class takes turns in sending him letters and questions. Fr Philip comes each week and spends time with the classes to answer their questions. This builds a two way relationship and we have all learned so much about each other this year.

Connections with Japan

  • The Years 5/6 class has continued to strengthen their links with students in Japan. After receiving journals and photos from their pen pals in Himeji, the students wrote letters back, and included an origami koala and photos of themselves. We were also thrilled to receive videos from Japan from our pen pals in which they sang, danced and introduced us to Himeji Castle and to some traditional Japanese games and craft. We are in the process of making our own videos to send back to Himeji. Students are planning to introduce their pen pals to our school and to some Aussie sports and food. It has been fantastic to see the students in Himeji and St Anthonys getting to know more about each other and each other’s cultures through this exchange.

Congratulations to our Graduating Little Ants!

The Closure of School Banking from Commonwealth Bank

For 90 years, our School Banking program has helped children learn about money, reinforced the importance of regular savings and provided structure for parents to support their children to save.

Though the program continues to have strong support from schools, parents and teachers, recent decisions by some state and territory governments because of a review by the corporate regulator mean we are unable to continue providing programs in schools, and we have had to make a difficult decision to close our School Banking program for all government and non-government schools across the country.

Our School Banking program was established in 1931 at a time when having a bank account was not commonplace, and since then we have helped more than 15 million Australians take their first financial steps. This would not have been possible without the wonderful support we have received from schools like yours, including all the parents and volunteers, and for this we are deeply grateful. Thank you.

Even though this is a sad time, School Banking has taught so many young Australians, past and present, the value of money and we believe this should be celebrated. We have created a place for you to share your stories, fondest memories and lessons learnt through the program. To share your story and access our financial education resources, please visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

Even though the CommBank School Banking program will not be returning to your school after this year, you can continue to make deposits into your child’s Youthsaver account through online transfers or at any CommBank branch. If you need further information please phone 132 221 or visit your local CommBank branch.
