Term 3 - Week 2 (30th June, 2021)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Value in Focus: Faith

We believe strongly in God and in each other.

John 6: 24-35

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus explains to his followers that he is the ‘Bread of Life’.  When we go to Mass, the bread and wine becomes Jesus’ body and blood.  He feeds us with his own body.  We too are called to share Christ’s mission to feed the hungry.

Holy Communion

Preparation for the Sacrament of Eucharist will commence next Tuesday, at 3.30pm with a parent information session to be held in the Library for those students and their parents who will be receiving the sacrament later in the term.

CPPA Conference

The CPPA Conference that I attended this week was titled "Never Let A Good Crises Go To Waste".  These are famous words first used by Sir Winston Churchill.  The speakers (both virtual and present) over the three days really spoke to this theme and how it could be applied to leading schools.  I would like to share with you some of my takings from the conference:

Pasi Sahlberg (Finnish Educaor):  The value of play (structured and unstructured) for children can never be underestimated.

Glenn Mitchell (Former ABC sports journalist):  We ALL have a responsibility for mental health first aid.  Do not be afraid to ask "Are you OK?"

Karl O'Callaghan (Ex WA Police Commissioner):  Look for potential in each situation and 'turn crises into creations'.

Richard Gerver (British Educator):  Look for the simple – this is the ‘human’  and remember to try and 'colour in outside the lines a bit more'.

Karen Haddon (Mindfulness EAS):  Living and Leading with Gratitude, Resilience, Awareness, Compassion and Empathy and incorporate these into your life to improve wellbeing and mindfulness.

Glenn Stewart (High Performance Manager WCE):  Clarity, Alignment, Relationships, Systems are all essential elements that enable organisations to function and flourish.

Class News

Year Four/Five Class News

Wow! We are already in Term Three. Our class has launched into learning about fractions; how to describe them, represent them and identify different types of fractions. We’ve decided that ‘Fractions are Fun’. Italian has seen the Year Fives busy with building a personally designed Minecraft house and the Year Fours are learning all about the Olympics, they are loving it!

We enjoyed the CSBP Hockey Clinic on Tuesday 27th July even though the weather was cold and blustery, but luckily the rain stayed away. We all got to learn some new skills and challenge each other to keep the ball from the other player. Some of us even won a water bottle at the end of the session. As our Athletics Carnival is this term, we are trying to practice our skills as often as possible so we can shine on the day.

Pre-Kindy RE Corner

In Pre-Kindy R.E news, we have been learning how to make the sign of the cross. Each morning we start our day with a prayer.  We begin the day by saying, "God is in our head; God is in our hearts and God is watching over our shoulders."  We discuss all the things that we are thankful for, our friends, school, families and so much more. We have also been learning some hymns during our end of day mat sessions. One of our favourites is the song ‘God is so Mighty’ we love singing and doing the actions.

PE

The term has begun and so has the preparation for the Athletics Carnival. We will be focusing on all aspects of the carnival over the coming weeks at both Friday Sport and in Phys Ed lessons. Thank you to Matt White for marking out a running track for us to practise on.

Tuesday was our hockey clinic run by Rodney Johnson from Upper Great Southern Hockey Association. All students from year one to six participated. The students really enjoyed the activities and drills and learnt new skills they can use in movement challenges.

We look forward to the carnivals coming up later in the term and wish all the students the best of luck.
