Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We have enjoyed a very settled week and the news that there will be more restrictions eased over coming weeks is creating a positive vibe.

Congratulation to our year 3-6 children who are doing an amazing job of wearing their masks in class.  In talking to the children they have expressed that they feel safer working in the classrooms with them on.  The teachers are opening up the windows and keeping their classroom well ventilated.  Outdoor lesson and staff break areas are being widely used.

Kind regards,

Olga Lyons, Principal

Congratulations

Congratulations to Kerri Mirtschin who became an Australian citizen last week.  She is  now a true "Aussie."

Our Book Fair is Coming

Interesting Reading!

In this article a Psychologist  and former Teacher advises against parents making class requests for their children unless there are extreme circumstances.   I have seen first hand how parent/student requests have put friendships ahead of the best educational grouping for their child. Being in a class with their 'bestie' is not always a good choice. Being able to socialise and learn with a variety of children is an important life skill best learned at an early age.

Our students are grouped and regrouped with a range of students and teachers from other classes each day.   Our Class Creator program creates classes based on academic, behavioural and social information provided through a teacher survey.

Maths Talent Quest

Maths Talent Quest

This year two of our senior students, Lena Watty and Jorja Lowe, took part in the Maths Talent Quest. To take part in this competition both girls completed a mathematical investigation on a topic of their choice.  This project took the girls over a term to complete. Their investigations required them to spend many lunch breaks meeting with a teacher as well as many hours completing tasks and researching data at home.

Last Thursday the MAV held a virtual award ceremony. Lena Watty received a distinction for her investigation, ‘How was the wellbeing of the Year 5 & 6 students at St Patrick’s Primary School in Port Fairy affected by the Victorian lockdown in 2020?’

Jorja Lowe received a high distinction for her investigation, ‘What characteristics do the five most popular influences on the four most popular social media platforms have? How do they compare?’.  As well as this Jorja was awarded the prestigious LaTrobe University Young Women in Mathematics Award for the second year in a row. This award recognises women's contribution to mathematics and is presented to one female each year.

Student Drop off and Pick Up

St Patrick's is asking parents to remain in their cars during the drop off and pick up of your children at school and to not congregate with other parents outside the school. With the outbreak of COVID in Warrnambool we feel that it is important to minimise contact with people outside of your family. We look forward to when we can all gather again without restrictions.
