Term 1 Week 2 - Wednesday, 2nd February 2022

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome back to the 2022 school year with an especially warm welcome to all our new students and their families who are commencing their partnership with us at Orange East. It is always great to be back after a restful holiday and I look forward to working with all families to support the education of our students. This week also sees Miss Phillips commence as a classroom teacher on 1 Quokka, Mrs Dinham job sharing 1 day per week on Kinder Kangaroo and Mrs Canning continue as Deputy Principal for Term 1.

We are very much looking forward to our Kindergarten students commencing their first full day on Friday. Throughout Tuesday - Thursday this week they have been busy completing their Best Start Assessment with Mrs Bourke and Ms Stokes.

COVID INFORMATION

This year the school is again working in accordance with Department of Education and NSW Health covid requirements. These requirements include mask wearing by all staff, limitation of school visitors who are deemed non-essential and the provision of Rapid Antigen Tests for both students and staff for the first four weeks of the term. These measures are to increase student and staff safety in relation to the virus and I would like to thank parents for the remarkable take-up of collecting the RAT tests provided. Over the coming week we will communicate information about the distribution of additional RAT kits for Week 4 & 5.

Covid is now a feature that we accept and something we’ll have to work around everyday. There will certainly be challenges that we will face throughout the term along the lines of illness, both students and staff, and staffing of classes. Some days and weeks may look quite different to what we might expect.

From time to time there will be students at home who are close contacts or unwell with Covid, isolating for 7 days. If this happens to your child, please contact the school. The school will provide work to do at home if they are well enough. Our aim for these work packs is to make them easy for families to access, understand and complete. A staff member will deliver the pack/s to your home. Staff members will also make contact with your family regularly to maintain support during any periods of home learning.

Please note that when we are notified of a confirmed Covid case for either a staff member or student, we will communicate information to the community detailing the cohort of effected students. Due to privacy and confidentiality requirements, please understand that we are not permitted to reveal the identity of a specific student or staff member. To give some idea of the impact that Covid is already having, we currently have several staff members and a number of students sick or isolating. At this stage, we have had no Covid positive students or staff onsite since students have returned on Tuesday.

Some days your child may have a different teacher in their classrooms. Please know that every effort will be made to ensure that the best alternative is found. We will work hard to make the best arrangements that we can for the day ahead, given the resources at hand. Fingers crossed that things go as smoothly as possible for us all.

INFORMATION FOR KINDER PARENTS

Well the big day is almost here! We can’t wait to see our kindergarten of 2022 on Friday!

To assist our kindergarten students make a great start, we have some slightly different arrangements for their first day. These arrangements support the school in complying with Department of Education and NSW Health Covid safety requirements while also helping our newest students take their first steps at big school.

On Friday

On Friday, parents and carers of our kindergarten students are permitted to escort their child into the school. From 8:40am, parents/carers can enter the school via the lower March St (Western) gate and keep children in the area in front of the kindergarten building or on the Netball Court. This will provide a good opportunity in a quieter area of the school to take photos, reassure children and say farewells. Additional staff will also be in this area to support families.

When the 9:07am morning bell (music) plays, we ask that parents and carers promptly exit the school site while the students are taken into their classrooms.

To support Covid safety, we do ask for a couple of specific instructions to be followed.

  •  All parents/carers entering the school grounds must sign in via the Services NSW QR code located on the school entry point fence.
  • While on school site parents/carers must wear a mask.
  • Parents/carers who are unwell should not come onto school site.
  • Social distance should be maintained from other parents/students on the school grounds.

Please note: it is not a requirement to escort kinder students onto school site this Friday. Kindergarten students who are dropped-off, come via bus or walk with siblings (without an adult) will be supervised by the playground duty teacher in the COLA/asphalt area of the school. Morning duty supervision commences at 8:40am and goes until the 9:07am bell at which point all students move to their lining-up area outside their classroom.

From Monday, 7th Feb Onward

From Monday onward, parents are asked to drop kinder students at any of the school gates from 8:40am onward. Students can then make their way into the school and place their bag on the COLA (large covered area near the canteen/play equipment) and play as per normal. Please note that there will be a teacher on duty on the playground and for the next few weeks we will also have an SLSO (teacher’s aide) supporting our kinder students in the morning. On their first day this week, teachers will also take the kinder classes through where to go and what to do in the morning before school.

When the morning bell (music) begins to play at 9:07am, kinder students will move down to their lining-up area outside the classroom. Again, we will have additional staff watching and directing any unsure kinder students.

If you are concerned that your child may be unsure what to do in the morning, please bring them to the school office and a staff member will assist them while they are learning.

At Home Time

Though our usual school day finishes at 3:10pm, for this Friday and next week kindergarten students may be picked up from 2:30 – 3:10pm if parents/carers wish. Please note that students staying until 3:10pm will be supervised by their class teacher. From the week commencing Monday, 14th February onward, kindergarten students will stay for the full day (3:10pm).

Parents and carers are asked to wait outside the Lower March St (Western) entrance. A staff member will bring your child out to meet you.

General Reminders

  • Morning playground supervision commences at 8:40am. The morning bell sounds at 9:07am and we encourage all students to be on school site prior to this time so they are on time and ready for learning.
  • Don’t forget your child’s school hat, packed recess/lunch and a drink bottle.
  • Please clearly label all belongings with your child’s name.
  • It is also a good idea to apply sunscreen in the morning and encourage them to reapply throughout the day.
  • Kindergarten sports days is Thursday, with regular uniform required all other days.
  • Canteen is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday with purchases made only via the online QuikCliq system – available via our SkoolBag app homepage or by following this link: https://www.quickcliq.com.au/

We hope that you and your child enjoy the exciting times ahead!

Regards,

Glen Bourke

CANTEEN NEWS

Our canteen reopened for the year today. As per previous years, it is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Please note canteen lunch orders can ONLY be purchased via the QuickCliq website which can be found on our Skoolbag app or by following the link below. The website will only allow purchases up until 9:30am on the day of the order.

https://www.quickcliq.com.au/

Cash Purchase Menu

Certain cold drinks, ice products and chips can also be purchased with cash at either recess or lunch. Please note, these items can still also be purchased through the website as well.

STATIONERY PACKS

Please note all basic stationery requirements have been purchased for all students. This year the school will meet a significant portion of this cost but we are also asking parents to contribute $20 towards the purchase of this important equipment. This fee covers the cost of books, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, scissors, glue sticks and also a number of online educational software packages we purchase for all students in the school. The total value of the listed items is significantly more than the amount above but funds raised through this fee will allow us to purchase further items to support learning in all classrooms and also ensure quality, appropriate and consistent stationery is being used by all students.

Stationery for each class will be managed and distributed by the class teacher, as per the system they set-up in their room. The stationery, including books, has been purchased corresponding to the year level/needs of the students. If parents wish to purchase additional items we suggest a pencil case, coloured pencils and/or textas for individual use – all clearly labelled. Over the coming weeks teachers will send out their class newsletter/note which will detail any additional items they would like sent in i.e. library bag, paint shirts, etc.

EXITING THE SCHOOL

Parents and carers are reminded that students have a specific exit plan from the school at the end of each day. This is done to ensure the safety of all students as they move from the school, at what is usually a busy time on the roads surrounding our school. We have worked to simplify this process, please see below:

  • Older students required to meet/wait with younger siblings can move to the younger sibling’s exit inside the school grounds.
  • All K-2 bus students will still be walked to the bus waiting area next to the school office under teacher supervision.
  • Students in 2 Dolphin (Miss Cheney) and 2/3 Koala (Mrs Press/Mr Meares) will also be walked to the Nile St exit.
  • All primary (3-6) students, once released from outside their classroom area, will move sensibly to their appropriate exit.
  • All exits will continue to be supervised by a teacher.
  • The Spring St exit is only for the use of bus students or students walking scooters/bikes.

SUMMER UNIFORM

As we continue through the warmer weather of summer, a reminder that during Term 1 it is compulsory for students to wear their maroon school bucket hat while playing in the playground, as well as during PE and Sport. Students not wearing the correct hat will be restricted to playing under the COLA/central lunch area.

Also a reminder that we have a high expectation for all students to be in the correct uniform. Wearing the uniform is not only important for the self-esteem of our students but promotes the school as a positive and proud part of the community. I have included the following table with the uniform requirements for Term 1 to assist parents/caregivers.

CHANGE OF STAGE 2 SPORTS DAY

Please note that Stage 2 Sports Day has now moved to Friday. This change has been made to better utilise school grounds and ensure that our morning literacy session is uninterrupted.

Most Stage 2 students will have come in Sports Uniform on Wednesday this week already. For this week, on Friday they can just wear regular school uniform. Starting next week (Wk 3) they will commence the new sports day.

Sports Days

  • Stage 3 - Year 5/6 (including 4/5 Seal) - Wednesday
  • Stage 1 - K-2 (including 2/3 Koala) - Thursday
  • Stage 2 - Year 3/4 - Friday

SICK CHILDREN

We urge parents and carers to keep child/ren at home if they are feeling unwell, particularly if they have a cold, fever, cough, sore throat, any respiratory illness or flu-like symptoms. We are excited to have our child/ren back at school but we also have a priority to ensure our staff and students are kept healthy and safe. Also, if your child/ren arrive at school unwell or fall ill during the day, the office staff will call you to pick the child/ren up as soon as possible.

The procedures are in place to protect the wellbeing of all members of the school community and remain of critical importance.

LOOKING TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS?

As a school, we are very fortunate to have the support of an incredible school community, particularly during some of the interesting challenges we have all faced these past 2 years.

For this reason, we would like to try and give back a little by continuing the OEPS Community Business Directory section of our newsletter and SkoolBag app. Parents and carers who own/operate local businesses are invited to send in their business name, logo, brief 1-2 sentence description and business contact/location details. Over the coming weeks we will look to set up the directory. There is no fee or expectation of services to be rendered to the school in exchange for being listed in the directory – purely an opportunity for us to return the support we so readily receive.

Please contact the school office should you be interested in being included. Information can be sent to: glen.bourke@det.nsw.edu.au
