Newsletter 12, 30 July 2021

From the Leadership

Wow what a start we have had to this term. We're really hoping that we can get some sort of normality happening over the next few weeks for all our wellbeing.

I would like to start by saying a massive thank you to our community for their understanding during this time. We are saddened by not having parents on site, but you have understood why this is necessary at this time and have been fantastic helping us all stay safe.

Our learners during this time have also been special and boy did we miss them and are so happy that they are all back.

I must also thank our teachers and other support staff for their work behind the scenes during our lockdown. The coordination behind our flip to an online learning environment was massive, but everyone did their job to near perfection.

We would like to gain some feedback on what worked well and areas for improvement just in case we must do this all over again.

A massive thank you again and please be safe during what is a challenging time for us all.

We also welcome or are about to welcome five new learners and their families to our school and into our community.  Louis F in Year 1, Lila F and Fred D in Year 4,  Connie D in Year 2 and Reggie D in Reception.

I would also like to congratulate Jasmine Miller on her appointment as a permanent teacher at St Leonards.  We are hoping to hear about other staffing as soon as we can.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 reports have been posted home. If you have not yet received yours, please contact Mel via email melanie.worden673@schools.sa.edu.au

Some reports may have gone astray if you have moved house in the last few months and not updated your mailing address. Please let us know of any changes of address, email or phone number as soon as possible as correct contact details are important for communication and in case of emergency.

2022

We are starting our preliminary planning for the 2022 school year. This is a long process that takes into consideration new reception enrolments, current enrolments and the movement of students into high school. 2022 is a unique year as we will farewell both our Year 7 and Year 6 students as Year 7 becomes the first year of high school.

If your child/ren are currently in Reception - Year 5 and they are not returning to St Leonards, please email Mel Worden,  melanie.worden673@schools.s.edu.au as soon as possible with your childs' name, current year level and destination school.

Secondary School Enrolment Offers

This term enrolment offers for secondary school will be sent to the families of our Year 6 and 7 students. It is important for you to know that not all schools will send out their enrolment offers at the same time, but they will be sent as close as possible to 13 August 2021.

Most families will receive their offer via email. If you think you have not received your enrolment offer from your secondary school, you need to check your junk folder for an email from education.noreply@sa.gov.au.

If you did not provide an email address on your Registration of Interest form, you will receive your enrolment offer in the mail or it will be handed to you by your child.

If your enrolment offer has not arrived by 18 August, please let our Enrolment Officer, Mel Worden know via email Melanie.worden673@schools.sa.edu.au or phone 82949811 and we can follow up with the secondary school on your behalf.

If you need support to accept your enrolment offer, it is best to contact your allocated secondary school and they can step you through the process.

Sustainability News

Hello everyone. Welcome back for Term 3. We are excited to continue our SLPS rubbish revolution this term.

Ziplock Bags

Are you looking for a great way to help reduce your lunchbox rubbish? We have the prefect answer. Compostable ziplock bags. Available now through QKR! A box of 20 for $3.30 They will be delivered to classrooms every Friday.

10c Recycling

Do you recycle your 10c cans/bottle/cartons at home? If not we would love to recycle them at school. You can drop them into the grey lidded wheelie bin at any time. If bottle are glass then please drop them to Miss Rollings in Room 6 to keep them safe until recycling. We use this money to continue with sustainability efforts around the school such as the fruit and veg garden.

Face Masks

Unfortunately due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic face masks have become necessary.  All single use face masks must be disposed of in the regular rubbish. A good habit to get into is cutting the elastic loops off before placing them in the rubbish as the loops can get tanged around wildlife if any manage to get into our environment or waterways.

Music is Fun Band

The Music is Fun band visited St Leonards at the end of Term 2 and it was a fabulous afternoon of music, singing and dancing.

The performance featured a 7-piece band, lots of costumes and props, some weird and wacky instruments and also our very own student performers!

Special mention to the Year 5s who performed beautifully, singing the song ‘Somewhere only we know’ which they learnt in only two sessions.

At the conclusion of the concert, St Leonards students were praised for their excellent audience manners, enthusiasm and participation.

Liz Condous, Music Teacher

Piano Lessons

As of Term 3 2021 St Leonards is excited to offer private piano lessons to students in Year 1 -7 throughout the school day.  Georgina is currently teaching piano to students from Our Lady of Grace, and will commence next term with us.  She has a wealth of knowledge in teaching students how to play the piano and/or prepare them for exams.  All lessons are offered individually and are on a rotating time basis.  Contact Georgina on 0431201936 as soon as possible to discuss and secure a place for your child next term.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge finishes Friday 3 September so you still have plenty of time to finish reading your 8 PRC books and 4 free choice books. If you need a new form please see me in the Library or collect one from the Office.
