Hammondville Public School Newsletter

Issue 29 - Term 3, Week 10 - Monday 21 September 2020

A Message from the Principal

Welcome to Week 10

Congratulations on getting to the end of what has been a busy and exciting term. It is with much gratitude and appreciation that I get to thank the Hammondville Public School community for your continued support, whilst I have led this wonderful school. I will be finishing in the full-time relieving principal position this week and would like to warmly welcome Ms Clark to the position of Principal. Ms Clark will begin her appointment on the first day of Term 4, October 12. Welcome Ms Clark!

Mobile Dental Program 2020

NSW Health are offering all Hammondville students a free school-based dental check-up and preventative care package. This will be delivered by NSW Health staff in Term 4. This program will be running on Thursday 10 & Friday 11 December 2020. Each child will be receiving an information and consent pack tomorrow. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to have a comprehensive dental check-up, a review appointment in 12 months if required and additional treatment at school or in a local dental clinic, if required. This is all at no cost to families. I hope all families will take up this wonderful offer from NSW Health.

Water Bottles

Just a reminder that due to current COVID-19 guidelines, bubblers are not allowed to be used at school at this current time. Can I please remind all families to ensure that each child has their own water bottle, particularly now as the weather is heating up.

Supervision

We have recently noticed that several students are arriving at school before 8:30am. Supervision of the playgrounds does not begin until 8:30am. For safety reasons can I please remind all families to ensure that they are not at school before 8:30am unless enrolled in before school care.

Jersey Day

This Wednesday 23 September we will be holding our annual Jersey Day fundraiser. I cannot wait to see which teams our students support. Mrs Murray says ‘Go the bunnies”.

K-2 Cross Country

This Thursday 24 September will be our K-2 cross country carnival. Good luck to all of our competitors. I’m sure you will have a wonderful time running the course, out in the sunshine.

Jump Rope for Heart

This Friday 25 September all students will participate in Jump Off activities to support the Heart foundations ‘Jump Rope for Heart'. All students have been practicing their skipping this term. I cannot wait to hear who our stage finalists will be. Happy jumping Hammondville!

Kindergarten 2021 Online Zoom information session

Tonight at 7pm, we will be running our parent information session for our new Kindergarten students who will be starting in 2021. Due to COVID restrictions we have had to be creative in the way we deliver information to our new families. For more details on how to register for the Zoom webinar please visit the Kindergarten Orientation 2021 Facebook group, via our Hammondville Public School Facebook page.

Kindergarten Enrolments

It is that time of the year when we begin planning for Kindergarten orientation. Due to COVID-19 our orientation programs will be slightly different this year. Information on how this may look will come home to those families involved once plans have been finalised. If you have a child or have friends who have a child who is ready to come to school in 2021, I encourage you to enrol them as soon as possible. This will allow you to be well-informed about upcoming Kindergarten 2021 information as well as assisting us as a school, in our planning for 2021.

Superstars

My favourite time of the week! Congratulations to all students who saw me last week for outstanding behaviour, work samples or effort. I thoroughly enjoy listening to you all talk about your work, how you feel about your achievements and what you want your next success to be. Keep it up Hammondville!

Late Arrival/ Early Departure

All students who are late to school must come via the office to receive a late pass, which is then to be handed to their teacher.

If you are picking up your child early from school you must visit the office first to receive an early departure pass, which you then give to your child’s teacher.

PBL News Week 10

We have had a great Term of explicitly teaching, learning and demonstrating our 3 Whole School PBL Expectations of Being a Safe, Respectful Learner”. Students enjoyed a PBL whole school reward this term with a movie and popcorn. Students also received canteen vouchers in our Hero Token rewards drawn each week.

Our students have been focusing on PBL Lessons since week 6 this term that are specific to the needs of their cohort. Students have had the opportunity to re-learn the school behaviour management rules across the school and demonstrate their understanding of how to adhere by these expectations in a positive manner.

Keep working hard at being Safe, Respectful Learners for the remainder of this week and during the school holidays.

In Term 4, we have some exciting PBL changes happening such as new look “Hero Tokens”, that will specifically be given to students who demonstrate either being safe, being respectful or being a learner. These hero tokens are not only for the playground or classroom, but for all areas across the school and can be given by any member of staff who notices a student demonstrating these expectations.

Mrs Peroni did our K-2 PBL draw over the speakers on Friday. Their prize will be a canteen voucher. Our K-2 PBL winners for Week 10 were:

K Blue - Fletcher B, K Green - Sophie S, K Red - Leo T, K Yellow - Cruden N, 1/2 Gold - Walid A, 1/2 Silver - Ethan N, 1/2 Bronze - Toby B, 1/2 Copper - Chapman C, 1/2 Titanium - Connor B, 1/2 Platinum - Lacey R.

We look forward to 3-6’s Hero Token draw this Friday.

We would appreciate it if parents took some time to speak to their children about the meaning of, our 3 Whole School Expectations and discuss the importance of following these expectations at all times.

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday and we look forward to seeing all students in Term 4.

The PBL team

Debating Win

The debating team had a great win last week with all team members stepping up to the plate with confidence and great arguments. I don't think there was a moment of doubt that we had this one in the bag from the first words we spoke. Tia and Kryshtof started strong and Sienna brought home the win in no uncertain terms. Moriah supported the speakers with great ideas and rebuttals and I think all adults and students watching were glad they were not debating the mighty Hammondville Hawks! Well done debaters.

Ms O'Connor

Jollybops Science Incursion

Last week on Tuesday, Stage 3 experienced an amazing science incursion by Jollybops Science. Rusty the Robot and The Professor showed us different types of solids, liquids and gases, and their different effects on one another. Year 5 and year 6 learned many chemical reactions during unique and extraordinary experiments.

“I found it interesting how they had all these different ingredients and placed them together to make amazing experiments.” - Emily Hartland

“I liked how they crushed up the tennis ball when it was put in the liquid nitrogen.” - Justin Brown

“It was very entertaining and I liked the humour of it and how all of the experiments were explained clearly.” - Moriah Prasad

“I liked the experiments, especially the elephant toothpaste because it was foamy.” - Holly Salzmann

“I really liked the balloon explosions and how fire appeared in the air, as well as learning.” - Emerson Smith

“The comedy made it a fun, educational experience for me and my classmates." - Simone Williamson

“They made education fun and clear for me, because after all the experiments they would explain how it happened.” - Cooper Jenkins

“I really liked the elephant toothpaste and the balloon explosion experiment. Rusty the Robot was also really funny!” - William Hogan

K-2 Cross Country

We have made the decision to run our K-2 Cross Country this week on Thursday 24 September. Our teachers will be taking the children out for some extra practice runs before then.

Please make sure your child wears their sports uniform and runners on this day and brings a bottle of water.

Due to current COVID restrictions and a limited grass area at present, this will be a little different than previous years. There will be no parents or carers onsite and the children will run in separate stage groups. We will run the Stage 1 and Kindergarten (in that order), with girls running before boys. The emphasis will be on fun and each child will receive a participation ribbon from their teacher for completing the course.

We know you will miss seeing your child run this year, but we will post lots of photos on Dojo and Facebook for you to view.

Looking forward to seeing many smiling faces run across the finish line on Thursday,

Mrs Enright
