Scotts Head Public School Newsletter

Term 2 | Week 10 | 22 June 2021

Principals Column

Welcome all families to Week 10 and the end to a wonderful Term 2.

What a fantastic day for all students who competed at our Athletics Carnival on Friday. Thank you to all families who came along to support our athletes on the day. Thanks to all the bakers who donated delicious snacks for the hungry racers and all the parents who helped out in the canteen on the day. A huge thanks to the staff for their tireless effort to keep the carnival flowing. Congratulations to a victorious Oxley House.

Great news! The Newcastle Stand-up Paddleboard Association, who hold their annual SUP Games in Scotts Head, have generously contributed $2,000 to Scotts Head Public School. They are a not-for-profit organisation whose donation will be used for our vital WAVES and Surf Awareness swimming programs. We value this kind connection with Newcastle SUP and thank the members for supporting our local school which will benefit all our students.

More excellent news! We have been successful in receiving the grant funding for an outdoor COLA to cover the basketball court. This will create an excellent all-weather outdoor space, big enough for all our students and their families. Site inspections have been carried out and the project will be completed before 30 June 2022. This new all-weather area will be invaluable for our school and community for numerous future events and functions and a big step forward for our village.

Well done to all the students who have been completing the QuickSmart and Intensive Reading programs this semester. These students have made progress with their learning journey, persevering when learning gets tough and turning up the next day. We celebrated all the determination and effort these students continuously bring last Wednesday with a commitment to learning picnic down at the park. Keep up the great work!

Half yearly reports will go home to all students at the end of this week. We look forward to working together in a collaborative partnership with students and families in semester 2 where students continue to connect, succeed, thrive and learn. The remainder of the year will continue to be consistent with myself remaining as Relieving Principal, Lyndsey Caldecott as Assistant Principal and Jess Sant staying as the Year 1/2 teacher.

ARRRRRRRRR Friday is finally close where all students are asked to dress up as pirates, there will be activities organised by the SRC from 12:00-1:30pm. The SRC are asking for gold coin donations with all money going towards brain cancer research.

Everyone have a safe and happy winter holidays and I look forward to a jam packed second semester at Scotts Head Public School - “We’re Dynamite!”.

Spotlight on Year 3/4

We have had a great term in the Year 3/4 Class. The students have been making tremendous improvement in their learning and we are so proud of them.

In Numeracy we have been completing daily mental activities to build our understanding of basic facts and how to apply them to problems.

In English we have been learning about intertextuality and finding lots of hidden messages in books authors have written. We have experimented with using these in our own writing which has been fun!

As part of Reconciliation Week we created some artwork to represent our thinking about what reconciliation is and how we can make a difference in the future.

We've also learnt how to reduce waste by exploring the ways products are made then exported around the world. The school received 960 boxes of seedlings from Woolworths so we brainstormed ways to use all of the parts of the boxes to reduce waste. We sorted all of the seedlings into groups so that we can use these to plant in our school.

We wanted to congratulate all of the Year 3/4 students on their efforts in the Public Speaking competition. Their speeches were excellent and it was great to see an improvement in confidence and skills.

We can't wait to see what this awesome Year 3/4 Class continues to surprise us with in Term 3 and 4.

District Public Speaking

We had four students represent our school at the District Public Speaking at West Kempsey Public School.

There were six schools in attendance with two representatives from stage 2 and stage 3.

We are so proud of their efforts and would like to congratulate Wolfe on winning the stage 3 District competition and he will now proceed to the next level to represent the school.

The adjudicator mentioned that the quality of our students’ speeches was outstanding.

Well done to Lior, Riley, Tarrin and Wolfe.

Stage 2 Indonesian Films

Students in 3/4 and 4/5 have put together some bilingual videos with road safety messages. This collaborative project involved communication, creativity and IT skills (plus a good dose of humour in some cases!) To watch these short films (subtitled in both Indonesian and English) click on the link below to access all the films in Google Drive. A selection of the best films will also be sent to our sister school in Indonesia for feedback. Selamat menonton! Enjoy watching!

2021 Athletics Carnival!

COVID-19 and our School

With the cold and flu season upon us, we would like to remind parents and carers that in accordance with advice from NSW Health, students should not attend school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

Please advise the school of your child’s absence on the first day they are away from school and advise of any symptoms they may be experiencing. You can do this by phone, email or via the Skoolbag app.

Students who are unwell with flu-like symptoms are strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.

Please provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be symptom-free before being permitted to return to school. You can simply email a screenshot of the text message you receive to the school: scottshead-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all visitors to the school, that they must sign the school sign-in sheet where they acknowledge that they will comply with the COVID-19 requirements for visitors, contractors and service providers each time they visit. Visitors must also check in using the Service NSW QR code.
