Holy Trinity Primary Granville

Term 2 Week 8 - 11th June 2021

From the Leadership Team

Philip Mahony | Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Next Tuesday is our Staff Development Day, with the teachers working on the new Religious Education Curriculum "Live Life to the Full". This is a pupil free day, so the children return on Wednesday. The School Athletics Carnival is being held at Tiger West next Friday 18th June. All the children are to come to school in their Sports Uniform ready to catch the bus and bring their lunch and plenty of water in a small bag.

HOW HARMFUL IS SOCIAL MEDIA TO MENTAL HEALTH?

How harmful is social media to teenagers' mental health? According to one recent research study, social media is no more harmful than television was for young people in the 1990s.

The study looked at more than 430,000 young people aged 10 to 15  in the UK and US. It found no evidence  that any link between mental ill health and technology had grown worse over that time.

The research examined TV viewing, social media engagement and the use of digital devices such as smartphones before comparing them with feelings of depression, suicidal tendencies and behavioural problems. It aimed to  investigate growing concerns that technology is becoming  more prevalent in young people's lives and more harmful to their mental health.

Other studies, however,  have suggested a rise in teenage depression. A report by University College London in 2019 found that adolescents were more likely to feel depressed and to self-harm, and less likely to get a full night's sleep, the ten years previously.

The study also found there was no no notable difference in impact between boys and girls. Some may assume, or have anecdotal evidence, that social media or smartphones result in poor mental health, but this is not necessarily the case. While some individual may be more affected than others, on average research shows the relationship is weak.

Instead there are other factors that appear to be more strongly related to poor mental health. Sleep, bullying and cyberbullying, and conflict between parents have much greater impact.

In the meantime, the wise parent keeps a close eye on the amount of time spent social media and the material being accessed. When young people know their parents are interested and watchful they may be influenced to make good choices.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY - Tuesday 15th June - No School

Please Note: On Tuesday 15th June students do not come to school, only staff will be at school.

Jason Fisher | Assistant Principal

Arriving on time to school

It is very important that children arrive at school on time (9.00am for a 9.10 start). When children arrive late it is very disruptive to the class because they usually walk into the room and want to socialise. The teacher then has to repeat the instructions to get the late student ready for learning. This can happen several times if there are several students late.

The children who are late can also feel lost because the class has already started.

Last week when we had photo’s we had to delay the class photos due to so many children arriving late. Please try and get the children to school on time as it is beneficial for all.

Corner shop in the morning

It has been reported that some children are walking over to the corner shop after they are dropped off in the morning (before the gate is open). This is dangerous as the traffic around the school is quite heavy in the morning. Children from Holy Trinity should not be going to the corner shop by themselves in the morning or after school. Last week there was a child (from the local Public School) who got hit by a car. Luckily he was OK but it could have been a lot worse. Thank you for supporting us with this matter.

Feast of the Most Sacred Heart

Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This celebration falls on the Second Friday after Pentecost Sunday. It is one of the most well known devotions in the Catholic faith, honouring Jesus Christ’s heart as a representation of His divine love for humanity.

We pray for; the light of Jesus to surround and guide us.

The eternal love of Jesus, to guide and protect us.

The joy of Jesus, to uplift and renew us.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, to forgive our sins and to be with us always.

Amen
