Cross County Success

Primary students recently participated in the 2021 Cross Country event. This was the first time the event had been held in two years, due to COVID-19 restrictions, and the students really enjoyed themselves. Thank you to Miss Wilson and the team for organising the event.

Soccer Nets

The soccer nets have been set up and students are enjoying playing soccer on both sites during the break times. Thank you to Mr. Quinn for taking the time to attach the nets for the students.

What works, best practices for parents and carers-

High expectations

Students learn best when teachers have high expectations. Having high expectations means that teachers work hard to gain students’ interest, encourage them to learn new things, provide help when they need it, are clear and consistent about how they want students to behave and learn, and vary the way they teach to meet students’ needs.

Check in with your child

  • For primary school students: Did you try something new today? What was it? How did you go? How do you feel when you’re learning something new?

Wellbeing

Students learn best when they have a high level of wellbeing. Student wellbeing is a broad term that includes good mental, physical and emotional health, feeling supported in learning, building healthy relationships and having a strong sense of meaning and purpose. Teachers can support students’ wellbeing by creating a safe environment, helping students to feel that they belong, valuing their opinions and perspectives, encouraging them to be interested in learning, and helping them to manage their emotions and develop positive relationships with teachers and other students.

Check in with your child

  • For primary and secondary school students: How do you feel about school at the moment? Are there things that you find hard or challenging? Do you know what to do or who you can speak to if you’re having a bad day or have a problem? Does someone look out for you at school?

Library News

Donation

Cooerwull Public School has been lucky enough to receive a truly wonderful donation from Dymocks Children’s Fund and Dymocks Book Store. We have received $13,000 worth of new high-quality books for both of our libraries. We were able to receive this grant as our school qualified as a bush fire affected area and due to some of our families losing a great deal in the fires, Dymocks Children’s Fund have kindly donated these new books for our students and wider school community to enjoy.

We are extremely grateful for the generosity and kindness of Dymock’s Children’s Fund to allow both of our libraries to have this amazing new collection of books. The students will enjoy reading the beautiful new books.

Thank you to Mrs Bodnar and Ms Leffley who have been busy accessioning and covering the books so that they can be on the shelves quickly for the students.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 21st successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

By facilitating NSS we aim to:

  • promote the value of reading and literacy,
  • promote the value and fun of books,
  • promote an Australian writer and publisher,
  • promote storytime activities in libraries and communities around the country,

and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.

What do we look for in the National Simultaneous Storytime book?

Each year, interested publishers send in possible titles. From a practical perspective, the publisher has to be able and willing to provide copyright release for use of the illustrations, book projection, translation into other languages and performance. The publisher also needs to commit to a special print run of several thousand copies. This narrows down the options. The criteria for choosing from the remaining books include: a positive storyline; appeal to a modern and diverse audience; suitability for read-aloud (language and length); how well the book lends itself to craft and other activities.

This years selection is “Give Me some Space” by Philip Bunting. All classes will be involved in reading, listening to and participating in activities based on this story on Wednesday 19th May.
