Speers Point Public School Newsletter

Wednesday 15 December 2021, Term 4 Week 11

Principal's Message

How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it's afternoon. December here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon? – Dr Seuss

How can the same year feel so long, and yet so short at the same time? The concept of time being elastic, stretching and compacting, is one I often talk about. If 2021 was a rubber band then it certainly stretched and condensed in places (not without a snap-back along the way).

Through it all, we have felt immensely supported by our community, especially when we’ve had to put in hard restrictions, make changes or drop events. Regardless, you understood and rallied with us – making the hard choices that much easier.

We are incredibly proud of the progress of our students this year, their achievements and their growth – academically, socially and emotionally. It is a very special team of staff at Speers Point who have all worked extraordinarily hard this year to provide for their students. I could not be more proud of our students and our staff.

We see off an amazing Year 6 cohort on Thursday, ready for Year 7 2022. Having now been with Speers Point for 10 years (the decade of Payne) it’s a special moment to see a Year 6 group transition on, having welcomed them into the school as Kinder in that elastic band of time that felt like not too long ago at all.

So from all of us here at Speers Point we wish you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable (sun soaked) holidays. Amazingly today, I’ve already had a email from a chain store advertising “back to school” specials, which means Term 1 2022 can’t be too far away!

Year 6 Clap-Out

One tradition we can continue this year is our Year 6 Clap-Out. On the last school day. Thursday 16th December our graduating Year 6 students will officially walk from our gates for the last time as Speers Point students.

The clap-out will be held down on Bell St entrance, with Year 6 parents and carers welcomed in to the garden area at the sandstone blocks (please wear a mask, even though it is after the 15th). Year 6 students will be able to come down through a tunnel of their peers outside the hall, down the zig-zag pathway and ring the traditional bell as they pass through.

We’ll be aiming to start the ceremony at 2.45pm. Don’t forget the tissues.

Graduating Staff and Appointments

I am repeating previous news but it’s worth mentioning it twice.

While some of us are still in Di-nial that Mrs Di Wood has officially retired (as opposed the denial) we have heard that she is already off holidaying off somewhere wonderful, we’d like to know more but she is no longer taking our calls.

As Mrs Reid retired last year (I see a trend) it left a SLSO vacancy in our support unit. We were all very excited the Mrs Sheridan Hitchcock has been appointed permanently to that position.

Mrs Culjak has been very moved by the number of farewell messages from community has she takes on her new position next year as Assistant Principal Curriculum & Instruction at Belmont Public School and Fassifern Public School.

Last week the students had the chance to meet our new teacher for 2022, Mr Jason Bruce. Mr Bruce was able to spend the day with us, familiarising himself with the school and the students ahead of his Speers Point career.

Semester 2 Reports

Our Semester 2 reports have been issued this week. Following the advice from the Department, our normal format for reports has been changed to reflect the extensive home learning period. The focus was shifted onto the observable or evidenced engagement with learning both at school and at home.

The reports also detail the student’s growth in English and Maths, along with focus areas for future growth. In Term 1 next year we will invite parents to join us for Student-Parent-Teacher conferences to help inform learning goals for the 2022 school year. These directions will help shape these learning goals.

Final word for 2021

From a Decade of Payne, it’s truly a special thing to see our school grow. I’m biased, as I should be, to say this is a very special school, and a great place to be. Every single year just keeps getting better. 2022 is still a mystery. We don’t know what the world will be around us, but I deeply look forward to continuing to make our school a safe, happy and thriving environment for our students.

Wherever you may journey over the holidays, even if it is from the lounge to the fridge - please have some fun and enjoy your time! Years 1 to 6 start Tuesday 1st February. We’ll see you then!

Tomorrow morning, Thursday 16 December, is the last opportunity to purchase books from the Book Fair.

Parents can make an online payment at www.scholastic.com.au/payment (be sure to choose Book Fairs payment, not Book Club) and your child can collect the books once presenting the order and the 8 digit receipt number.  Make sure it is clearly specified which book you have purchased for your child!

You may send in money with your child to purchase from the Book Fair in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name and class.

Mrs Hopton is happy to provide book suggestions!

Parents and Citizens Update

P&C 2021

We had our final meeting for 2021 on Monday night and upon reflection, we had such a successful year – against all odds, you could say. The 2020 & 2021 Committees worked extremely hard to be innovative & ‘covid-savvy’ regarding all aspects of our scope. We introduced online ordering for Canteen, App payments for fundraising, such as raffles, cookie dough, sausage sizzles & Mother’s Day vouchers, we purchased a Square™ so we could use Tap n Go at any events and started a ‘contact-free’ Return & Earn program. All-in-all this enabled us to have one of the best fundraising years in P&C history!

Thank you goes out to our Canteen Volunteers:
