Melrose Park Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 5

From the Principal

School Photo Day

Next week, Tuesday 2 March, our school photos for the year will be taken.

All students were given an envelope to place an order. All students will have their photo taken regardless of whether a photo order is placed.

Envelopes for sibling photos were sent home with the eldest child last Friday. Sibling photos will be taken after class and individual photos have been taken.

Successful Students

The colour for Student Success in 2021 is red.

Students receive Success Cards from their teacher for demonstrating the school expectations of being a respectful responsible learner.

Students bring their cards home to you and keep them safe until they collect 10 small cards. Once they have 10 cards, they bring them back to school  to receive a large Kookaburra Card.

Once a student receives three large Kookaburra Cards, they will be acknowledged as an outstanding successful student and will be pinned with a red Success Star.

Student Invoice 2021

In the coming days the Semester 1 Student Invoice and Permission Requests will be sent home to all families.

Included in this invoice are whole school activities such as Swimming and Athletics Carnvials, the Life Education incursion, individual class excursions and sporting commitments.  These are the activities that have been organised for Term 1 and Term 2.

At Melrose Park PS the school organises the workbooks, text books for spelling and mathematics, software subscriptions, student diaries and literacy packs for each student,  thus saving parents time and energy to go out and purchase them. We call these items the Student Resource Pack.

If you need help with the payment of this invoice please contact the office to arrange a payment plan.  Activities need to be paid prior to the activity occurring.

One item that did not appear last year was the annual voluntary school contribution request. The funds raised are targeted towards the learning programs for all students and the inclusions of educational projects that are not funded by the Department of Education.  Whilst the government pays the salaries and utilities of a school, the annual voluntary contribution payment from parents allows schools to provide extra programs, books and equipment necessary to access the latest in learning. This year our focus is on improvements to technology.

We thank you for your continued support as we work together to provide quality education experiences for every child.

Parent engagement in learning

During the course of this week, parents have the opportunity to speak to their child's teacher about the learning journey of their child.  Students will lead the discussion about their learning  taking ownership for their learning journey.  The student can provide  information to clarify what they have learnt, what are the next steps in their learning, and what progress they are making towards this.

The three way interview is commonly used in schools across Australia and is based on research and evidence.

What does the research say .....

Professor John Hattie identifies "students self-reporting as the most significant indicator linked to raised student achievement".

Dylan William says "the process of students reflecting on their learning through effective questioning that promotes the articulation of student thinking, is integral to classroom and assessment practices that enhance student learning".

Friday is sports day

Chess Club

With thanks to the Sydney Academy of Chess and teachers, this company has kindly offered free chess lessons for Melrose Park PS students every Monday during lunch time for the year.

Interested students came along to try and see what the game of chess was all about.  The commitment needed from students is to sign up for a term of learning and game play. It does not matter if they have never played before.

We look forward to  learning to play and hosting some interschool competitions in our hall during this coming year.

Connecting with the community

Last Thursday, players from the West Tigers visited  Yr 3 -6 to present the NRL League Stars Inspire Health and Wellbeing program. The focus was on how teamwork relies heavily on resilience, respect, support and inclusion. Students were challenged to think about who supports them on a daily basis and how they can support others. There were a few fun activities and lots of participation. A highlight was a passing game which relied on the team working together with good verbal communication. Some students were fortunate enough to receive NRL merchandise for their  active participation.
