Issue 18: Thursday, 28th October 2021

FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

We have had a very smooth but busy start to Term 4 and again I would like to thank every member of our staff for their work to enable this.

COVID 19 UPDATE

A gentle reminder to everyone that we are re-implementing ongoing COVID-19 safety measures, and are operating under the Phase 5 Guidelines that include:

·         good hygiene practices should be promoted and maintained;

·         physical distancing of 1.5 metres between adults should be maintained, where possible;

·         maintain ventilation where possible by opening windows, doors and using air-conditioning; and

·         visitors, parents and students should be encouraged not to attend school if they are unwell.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS

Our children will be participating in the KSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th November.  Our HPE team are currently working with the children in preparation for this event and we wish all participants the best as they represent our school.

IN-TERM SWIMMING

In-term Swimming commenced this week for Group 1.  Group 2 children will begin their lessons on Monday, 15th November.  Any enquiries regarding these sessions can be directed to class teachers or our reception.

EARLY ARRIVALS / LATE LEAVERS

We have a number of children who are arriving very early at school and not attending before school care.  This is a supervision issue for us and we ask that students do not arrive at school before 8.00am unless there is a specific reason.

FROM THE DEPUTIES DESK

IN TERM SWIMMING

We have had a successful start to swimming lessons despite the cold, wet weather. Please remember:

  • Your child needs something warm to travel to and from the pool, especially while the weather is cold.
  • All items need to be labelled clearly.
  • Swimming lessons can make your child hungrier than normal. You may wish to pack an additional item in their lunchbox.
  • Kwinana Recquatic has a No Photo policy. If you go along to watch your child’s lessons, please do not take photos.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS

Permission notes have been distributed for those students who have been selected to represent Bertram Primary School at the KSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival. For students in Group 1 In Term Swimming, there is a clash on the Thursday and Friday in the second week. It is your choice whether they participate in swimming lessons or compete in the Interschool Athletics Carnival.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION

The Year 6 Graduation Ceremony will be held at Kennedy Baptist College on Monday, December 13th.  There is no charge for this event, however families are asked to indicate the number of tickets they require to assist with catering and organisation.  At this stage there is no limit on the number of tickets families can request, however all this could change in response to Covid-19 guidelines.

It is expected all students will travel to Kennedy Baptist College by bus, however parents may choose to sign them out at the conclusion of the ceremony and bring them back to school. Seats are available for families to travel to and from the Graduation Ceremony but must be booked in advance.

STORY DOGS

When children read to a dog, the outcomes are amazing! It is a non-judgemental setting, the children's focus improves, their literacy skills increase and their confidence soars. The accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its magic and helps children relax, open up, try harder and have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog. Woof!

Thank you to everyone who supported our Story Dog fundraiser last week, and a special congratulations to KK1, DD1 and KO2 who raised the most money and earned a visit from Story Dog Bella.

If you would like more information about Story Dogs please chat to Ms Healy in KK5 or Mrs Triplett.

UNEXPLAINED ABSENCES

If your child has Unexplained Absences, you will receive a note this week. Please take a few moments to provide a reason for these absences and return the note to their LA teacher or the front office.

PARENTING TIPS

Screen time for school children: part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.  Screen time can be part of a healthy lifestyle for children when it’s balanced with other activities that are good for your child’s development, like physical play, reading and socialising. Getting the right balance also includes making sure screen time doesn’t interfere with sleep.

Our tips can help you encourage your child to use screens in a balanced and healthy way.

1. Make rules about screen use

You can help your child find the balance between screen use and other activities by working with your child on some family rules or a family media plan.

Your family’s rules might cover:

·         where your child can use screens – for example, only in family rooms or not in the car

·         when your child can use screens – for example, mealtimes are free of TV, computers and phones, or no screen time before school or until chores are finished

·         how your child can use screens – for example, for making animations or checking a netball shooting technique, but not for playing Candy Crush

·         how you handle screen time for children of different ages – for example, there might be some games that your older child can play only when their younger sibling is out or has gone to bed.

It’s OK if your rules include time limits to help your child balance screen time with other things like physical activity. For example, it might help to know that Australian physical activity guidelines say school-age children should have at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day, like running and jumping.

2. Aim for short screen time sessions

Getting up and moving around is important for your child’s energy levels, development, sleep, and overall health and wellbeing. If your child is having screen time, it’s a good idea to encourage your child to take a break at least every 30 minutes and use screens in short bursts.

·         You can do this by encouraging your child to:

·         use a timer to set breaks

·         do something active when the timer ends, like play outside

·         make use of natural breaks in screen time – for example, encourage your child to do a victory dance when they finish a level in a game.

3. Get your child moving, especially outside

It’s a good idea to encourage your child to play outside several times a day.

Outdoor play doesn’t have to be a big deal. For example, at this age, children enjoy:

·         building and creating with equipment, furniture or other things they find outside

·         playing tiggy, chasey or tag

·         climbing trees.

Active play and physical activity for school-age children can happen indoors as well as outdoors. It can be simple things like dancing, doing star jumps, or throwing and catching balls.

4. Avoid screen time before bed

·         School-age children need 9-11 hours sleep a night.

·         Using screens before bed can affect how quickly your child falls asleep. If your child avoids mobile phones, tablets, computer screens or TV in the hour before bed, your child is likely to get to sleep more quickly.

·         Read more about school-age sleep.

·          Keep screens out of bedrooms at night

·         If you keep mobile phones and other devices out of your child’s bedroom at night, your child won’t be able to stay up late playing games or messaging friends. This can also stop your child being disturbed in the night by messages or notifications.
