Principal's Message

We’ve distributed the newsletter a little earlier than usual this week, due to the athletics carnival tomorrow.

Finishing with a bang!

It’s been a very hectic term for all teachers and school staff and we find ourselves, once again at the end of another term, not entirely sure where the time went. As always, our students continue to be awesome, setting a high standard of behaviour, engaging with their classwork to the best of their ability and making coming to school so much fun.

The teachers and I are so privileged to work at Lambton with such great students and families. I hope that it is not a stretch to say that we are hoping to finish the term with a bang.

There are few things to look forward to this week: Athletics Carnival, Parent-Teacher-Interviews, the school rebranding launch, out of uniform Friday and the Love Lambton events happening in the town. I hope that for all concerned, it will be a really enjoyable week.

NAIDOC Week 2021

NAIDOC Week occurs nationwide between 4-11 July which falls in the school holiday period. It is a critically important event on our nation’s calendar and one that we look forward to celebrating in school every year.

This year’s theme is ‘Heal Country’ something that is very relevant and greatly needed in Australia – healing. Our school will be celebrating NAIDOC Week in the first week back of Term 3. Further on in today’s newsletter the Aboriginal Education Team have given an overview of the activities planned for the week. There will be several opportunities for families to be involved including a special NAIDOC Assembly on Thursday 15 July. Can I also encourage you to look out for the events occurring locally during the school holidays to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Some of them have school holiday activities for children. Here’s a few starting points:

·         Newcastle City Library

·         Newcastle Museum

·         Newcastle Art Gallery

·         Awabakal Organisation

I hope to see many of you at one of the various events happening this week and wishing all of our students, teachers and families a happy holiday.

Warm Regards,

David Holland

Students of the Week

Out of Uniform this Friday

Please remember to choose appropriate clothing for the weather and wear enclosed shoes.  Please note there is no gold coin donation required.

Launch of new school logo and rebranding

We hope you can join us as we share the journey the visual identity committee have been on rebranding and developing our new school logo. The new school logo is somewhat different to our existing school crest and will be revealed to our teaching staff for the first time also at this event so we hope you are able to be a part of this exciting launch. Come along and enjoy a complimentary coffee, a little supper and also enjoy performances from our school band and choir.

The event is planned with parents and carers in mind. If you are unable to arrange alternate care for your children, there will be supervision provided by school staff in the library for school-aged children. Students can be signed in from 5:30pm onwards and signed out at the conclusion of the launch around 7:00pm. If you have younger children, you are welcome to bring them as we would not want you to miss the launch, however out of respect for other families attending, please come armed with a few strategies up your sleeve should they become a little unsettled during the presentations.

We hope you are able to join us!

Parent-Teacher Interviews - Wednesday 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Parent-teacher interviews are an opportunity for you to meet your child's teacher/s. By asking questions and gathering more detail about the information provided on the student report card, you have an opportunity to become more involved in your child's learning and provide support where needed.

Here are tips for getting the most out of parent-teacher interviews:

 Before the interview:

·     revisit the student report card and determine what information you need before the interview to support your child

·     ask your child if there are any areas they would like followed up (for example, where they feel they need extra help or have concerns) and share this information with your child's teacher during the interview

·     write a list of specific questions you wish to ask your child's teacher and take notes during the interview so you can share the comments with your child

Common questions may include:

·     Is there anything about my child's needs that I should know?

·     Does my child ask questions, participate in class discussions and other activities?

·     Is my child's progress satisfactory?

·     What activities does my child seem to enjoy the most at school?

·     How is my child fitting in with other children?

·     Is there anything I can be doing to help my child at home?

·     Do you have any concerns about my child?

It is also a good idea to list anything that might be happening at home that may be helpful for your child's teacher to know.

After the interview

It’s important to discuss the meeting with your child and really congratulate them on their strengths. If the teacher made suggestions of things you could do at home, discuss these with your child and commit to following through with them.

Walk away with an agreed plan

If the teacher raises issues about your child’s learning, development or behaviour, your goal will be to understand the plan to manage that during the school day and how you can help at home. Ask the teacher what sort of strategies they have in mind and how you can help.

Plan to communicate

The parent-teacher interview is not the only time you can discuss your child with the teacher, but many parents and carers find it’s their only opportunity to visit the school. Ask the teacher how you can best communicate with each other in the future.

Education/Book Week 2021

Our combined Education and Book Week celebration will take place at Lambton Public School on Tuesday 27th July.

Education Week is a time to celebrate the quality teaching and learning occurring every day in our school. As well, it is a time to acknowledge the wonderful support provided by our school administrative and support staff who work in our offices, classrooms, library and school grounds.

The 2021 theme for Education Week is “Celebrate Lifelong Learners”

Book week acknowledges and pays respect to the excellent children’s literature by Australian authors and illustrators and published last year.

The 2021 Book Week theme is “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”

Activities planned for Education/Book Week this year are:

  • Book Fair
  • Family Lunch
  • Open Classrooms
  • Author Visit
  • Reading Exchange with Buddy Classes
  • Book Character Parade

More information about the above activities will be in the newsletter next term.

Book Character Parade

The highly anticipated Book Character Parade will be a part of our combined Education/Book Week celebrations on Tuesday 27th July.

This year’s Book Week theme is “Old Worlds, New Worlds, other Worlds”.

We know that students will be eager to start organising their outfits soon. Could you please remind them that they are to dress up as their favourite book character or in keeping with the Book Week theme of “Old Worlds, New Worlds, other Worlds”.

Please ensure that students have enclosed shoes and covered shoulders and that weapons do not to come to school as part of their costume.

Children who prefer not to dress up are required to wear their school uniform.

Dress Up Box – For Book Week

We are putting together a box of dress up clothes like hats, wigs, scarfs, capes etc for when the school has Book Week and children forget, or are unable to come as a book character.

Any donations would be appreciated. Please leave at the office.

NAIDOC Week 2021

LPS will be celebrating NAIDOC week in the first week of Term 3. We are looking forward to creating a deeper understanding of the NAIDOC theme – Heal Country! We wish to “embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders...”  “Country that is more than a place and inherent to our identity. Country that we speak about like a person, sustaining our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally.” (From the NAIDOC website.)

Hunter Water will be presenting the book, “Where’s Our Water?” at our assembly on Thursday afternoon which is being led by our Stage 3 Aboriginal students. We hope to have one of our students playing his didge and Mr Holland reading a local Aboriginal dreaming story at our assembly each morning.

Parents and carers are welcome at these assemblies. Throughout the week, teachers will be showing students the Awabakal Language website which can teach us how to count and name some body parts in Awabakal language. There will be a colouring-in competition with prizes for each stage. We will play some traditional games, plant some native bushes, taste a variety of local sausages (eg crocodile, kangaroo, emu) and have an out of uniform day in the colours of the Aboriginal (red, yellow, black) and Torres Strait Island (blue, green, white) flags on Friday 16th July. We would also like to invite parents and carers to watch the traditional games on Friday. Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 will play in the morning session, Stage 2 in the middle session and Stage 3 in the afternoon session. We will let you know the time of the sessions early next term.

We are all very much looking forward to NAIDOC week at LPS and in the community from 4th to 11th July.

Memorable Olympic Moments – Hayley Lewis

Age: 47

Place of Birth: QLD

Olympic History: Barcelona 1992; Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000

Events: Women’s 200m butterfly, Women’s 400m Freestyle, Women’s 400m individual medley, Women’s 800m freestyle.

Medals: 1 x silver, 1 x bronze

Hayley Lewis was one of the most popular Australian swimmers of her generation. A triple Olympian, she won two medals in Barcelona: silver in the women’s 800m freestyle and bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle. This success came two years after she became a household name when, as a 15-year-old, she won a record five gold medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Lewis returned to the Olympics in 1996 but a disrupted preparation prevented her from matching her medals performances. After becoming a mum, she came out of retirement to qualify for the 800m freestyle at Sydney 2000, placing 13th. She retired with two Olympic medals, seven Commonwealth Games gold medals and a 1991 world title. She has also had success as an open water swimmer.
