PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Another busy term at Kearns Public School! Students have engaged in a variety of learning experiences and extra-curricular activities. They continue to develop their academic skills, as well as build their resilience, and develop positive wellbeing. This has been achieved by our committed and dedicated staff who make it their mission to ensure every student is known, valued, and cared for.
I would like to thank our parents and carers who have completed the enrolment process for their children who will begin their learning journey at Kearns Public School in 2022. Early enrolment enables our Early Stage One team to plan successful transition to school programs and enables families to engage in school routines. Enrolment information packs can be collected from our administration office or can be posted upon request. Please contact the school for further information.
Finally, my thanks are extended to our staff and P&C for their continued and remarkable work throughout this term, and I wish all our students a safe and restful school holiday break.
Ms Phillips
KINDERGARTEN 2022 ENROLMENT
The Department of Education has released a new enrolment procedure, meaning that families can now enrol their child at any time. Once enrolled, it is my understanding that your child will then qualify for Active Kids and Creative Kids vouchers. Please note that when you complete the online enrolment application, you will receive an email stating that the school will call you to book an appointment for you to come in with your required paperwork. Please ignore this email, it is automatically generated by the system. Once you have all of your documentation, simply drop in and we will complete the process with you.

STARTING SCHOOL TRANSITION
Identifying signs can be a fun and educational game to play with children.
Identifying and understanding signs assists with children’s early literacy, problem-solving and road safety awareness.
Incorporate signs into a game of I-spy whilst travelling, point them out as you walk to the local shops or park, and talk about their meaning with your child.
There are a variety of ways in which we can support our children's developing literacy skills if they are showing an interest in writing/drawing.
While it is encouraged for children to try writing the letters of the alphabet, children are not expected to be able to write their own names before starting school. The most important thing families can do to nurture the development of their writing skills is to provide children with a writing or drawing space within the home. This space will allow for your children to engage with various writing materials, and practice holding tools such as pencils, textas, crayons, and chalk. This assists with hand-eye coordination and hand muscle strength, and also provides an opportunity to be creative and express themselves.
If your child is able (or has an interest in) writing their own name, that's great! However, if not, don't despair. Recognising their name is a more important skill, as they will rely on identifying their name on their belongings, desk, and school resources once they enter the classroom.

START DATE FOR TERM 3
Just a friendly reminder that students are expected to return to school on Tuesday,13 July 2021. Please remember that Monday, 12 July is a school development day, a pupil free day.
ATTENDANCE
Strong school attendance is imperative for success. Every minute and day away from school add up to missed learning opportunities.
Education for your child is important and regular attendance is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase career and life options. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier, and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
If for any reason your child does not attend school, it is important to notify the office as soon as possible. This can be done by phoning the school office or via the skoolbag app. However, if an explanation has not been received within two days the school may contact you to discuss the absence as per our attendance procedures and in compliance with the Department of Education attendance policy.
PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE
Students are really catching the reading bug! We already have some students who have finished the Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC). When Stage 2 and 3 students finish reading 20 books from the Premier's Reading Challenge list, they log their books via the Student Portal. All students have been shown how to do this and can do it from home or school. The competition closes in August, so ask your child how they are going and help them log their books. K-2 are completing the PRC in class with their teacher.
STAY AT HOME ORDERS
With so many people staying home right now, we’re facing daily challenges on how to juggle our lives, work, health, connections with friends and family, and more. Below are some fun ideas to try while at home.
1. Create positive memories for your children to talk about in the future. Focus on connection, relationships, fun, and gratitude.
2. Create a morning routine that works for your family by adding fun activities like yoga or a dance party.
3. Teach your children important life skills like making their beds, cooking, fixing something around the house, sweeping the floor.
4. Start a ‘looking forward to’ jar. Every time someone wishes for something, write it down and place it in the jar to do after the restrictions end.
5. Exercise daily. Create a PE or exercise video to share with friends. Design bike paths or walking routes to take each day.
6. Go for a trip at home. Select your favourite destination and recreate it in your home. Make plane tickets, cook meals from your destination, set up an area of your house inspired by your dream destination.
FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM
We are all proud to be a part of the Kearns Public School community and as such expect that each of our students will wear their uniform with great pride. As the weather becomes cooler I understand that additional clothing may need to be worn. Parents and carers are reminded that only school jumpers are to be worn to school and long colourful socks or colourful jumpers are not permitted. We are always willing to discreetly support families with school uniforms where necessary. Families requiring support are encouraged to contact the school for further information. Please note that all children who are representing our school, such as attending an excursion or sporting event, are expected to wear their full school uniform.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART KICKS OFF TERM 3
Our SRC initiative for Term 3 is going to be participating in the Jump Rope for Heart skipping program.
Jump Rope for Heart helps your students get the exercise they need and raise money to save Aussie hearts. Being active is one of the most important ways that children can improve their health and wellbeing.
Sitting less and being active for 60 minutes or more each day has plenty of health benefits for primary-aged children. Research suggests that active children are more likely to become active and healthy adults, with a lower risk of developing preventable diseases, including heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. It is a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs.
Our school has registered to participate in this program for 7 weeks beginning on the 23rd of July and ending on the 10th of September.
Parents, it is important that you register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising, simply follow the link below to get started. www.jumprope.org.au/parents
Register and create your own secure webpage at:
jumprope.org.au/parents
Students will be skipping during lunch and recess breaks throughout the term, during this time you can share their online fundraising page with family and friends to help raise money for this great cause.
We will hold our school Jump Off Day on 10 September, this will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills.
Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!
