As part of the introduction to the School Wide positive Behaviour Support program, we are holding a competition for students to design a mascot that best represents our school and our school values. The winning entry will receive a new Nhill College winter jacket (valued at $60). Entries can either be drawn, or designed electronically using a computer. Entries should also include a brief description of why you think your mascot should be adopted by the school. Please submit your entries to Miss Tink or Miss Jones by 3.30pm on Monday 25th March. After shortlisting, a student vote will be held next week. The winning entry - and our new mascot - will be announced at a whole school assembly on Monday 1st April. Please see the attached poster for further details.
Parent Teacher Interviews will take place during the last week of term, with F-6 interviews to be held on Monday 1st and Wednesday 3rd April, and 7-12 interviews will occur on Tuesday 2nd April. Parents have been able to make bookings for these interviews via Compass since last Friday. To help inform discussions at these interviews, Term 1 Reports will be generated for parents to view in Compass on Friday 29th March. Parents are also encouraged to use Compass to access the Learning Task feature that staff are using to provide additional information about student progress.
At the secondary assembly the weekly awards were announced where form groups are rotated each week and teachers get the opportunity to nominate students who are displaying positive habits in the classroom. All nominees are read out and two students are randomly drawn to win a milkshake voucher from the canteen. This week’s winners were chosen from Year 8. Teachers had 242 nominated candidates to go into the draw. Congratulations to all Year 8’s! The winners of the milkshakes were Lexi and Jack.

This year Nhill College is going to be celebrating Harmony Day on the 17th of May. This day is marked by people coming together and participating in local activities. It is about community participation, inclusiveness, celebrating diversity, respect and belonging. To celebrate this day we are joining up with our neighbouring school, Kaniva College, to come together for some sports and a BBQ. If students are interested in attending they can sign up for Volleyball, Super 8s Cricket, Ultimate Frisbee or Basketball. There will also be an option to sign up as a volunteer for the day if students wish to still be involved but not do any sports. Signup sheets will be going up in the coming weeks.
The 4/5/6 Classes joined together to talk about diversity. Students drew pictures to represent what they believe Harmony Day represents. The mural can be viewed outside of the Lowan building.
Just a reminder that all donations from Funky Sock Friday throughout Term 1 will continue to support our Nhill College Relay for Life team.
Nhill College’s VCE Physical Education class again entered a team into Horsham & Districts Relay for Life event, “a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services.” This year’s event was back at Dock Lake, Horsham beginning at 5.45pm on Friday 15th of March and concluding at midday, Saturday 16th of March. Twelve students from Years 11 &12 along with 3 staff members (and 3 of their own children) participated in the relay, passing their pink cowboy hat-team baton continuously around the track for 18+ hours. For the third consecutive year, the team came home with the shield for the most laps completed at the event with a whopping total of 615 laps, approximately 203 kms!
Students reported that it was an eye-opening experience that they will never forget and made them grateful for the life that they live. They were extremely keen and motivated to meet the challenges of the event with many foregoing their rest or sleep breaks to ensure that the team was represented on the track outside of their own rostered times. They were determined to reach team goals and encouraged each other throughout the night and even more so come the daylight hours of the next day when bodies and minds were tired and weary. The team has raised $2625 for the Cancer Council in the hope to help find a cure for cancer. The school community have also been participating in a ‘Funky Sock Friday’ on each Friday of Term 1 where students make a silver coin donation to wear ‘funky’ socks for the day and have raised an additional $164.20 towards the team’s tally.
Many thanks to Mr Peter Hedt for his organisation again of this event, supervising staff members Mrs Amanda Cole, Mrs Carmen Trenery and Mrs Antoinette Toet and the Year 9 girls for cooking munchies for the team.
Team participants – Jessi Effrett, Josh Lees, Dylan Cole, Adam Zimmermann, Solly Marshall, Dominic Van der Linden, Sharma Delaney, Chelsea Merrett, Ellie Murden, Brooke Nossack, Olivia Dart, Lucy Bone, Amanda Cole, Carmen Trenery, Janine Grover, Antoinette Toet, Alissa Trenery, Jessi Toet, Marnie Toet.
Donations to go towards cancer research and the Nhill College VCE PE team can still be made for another 4 weeks at www.relayforlife.org.au. Search for the ‘Nhill College VCE PE’ under ‘Donate’ and ‘Team’ if you would like your donation to go towards the team’s tally.
The secondary year levels have taken on the Classroom Door Challenge. Students are required to decorate a door to reflect one or more of the school values. Doors have started to sprout this week, with several already completed and a few in the making. The challenge is due on Monday. The judges will have a hard time choosing which year level door will win a picnic with the well-being team!! Good luck everyone. An excellent initiative from the Wellbeing Team.
Regular attendance at school is extremely important to the social and academic development of all children. It is a Department requirement that parents contact the school each day their child is absent. Any unauthorised absences currently trigger an SMS via Compass at 9.45am each morning to notify parents that their child is not at school. If a parent receives such an SMS, it is requested that they contact the school as soon as possible to provide a reason for their child’s absence. This can be done by entering an explanation directly onto Compass via the app installed on your phone, or by calling the College on 53912111. (Please note that the Skoolbag app is no longer being used by the school to communicate messages.) In an effort to further reduce the rate of unauthorised absences being recorded at Nhill College, office staff will follow up with a phone call if a response to the SMS has not been received by 10.45am on the day of each absence.

If your child has any of the above medical conditions it is a requirement that you provide the school with an updated Management Plan each year. Management plans need to be signed by the child's medical practitioner or specialist and a recent photo of the child attached to the plan before being provided to the school.
We would appreciate parents assistance in this area so we can follow your childs action plan if to ensure the most up to date treatment is provided should the need arise.
Please find below a link to choose for access to the above form/s.

A list of latest model computers available from Nhill Bi-Rite and Wimmera Office Equipment has been included in this week’s newsletter for the consideration of families interested in a BYOD. These lists contain a range of devices that will be able to support student learning – at home and at school – over the next few years. A reminder that all students have free access to Microsoft Office, as well as some Adobe programs through their school subscription. For families considering a BYOD, it is worth noting that electronic resources are being used more and more frequently in classes, with the College subsidising Edrolo subscriptions for all VCE students, while Maths Pathways and Education Perfect resources are also being used more extensively across Years 7-10 this year. If you have any questions related to the College’s BYOD program, feel free to contact Mr Shrive. The BYOD product lists can be downloaded from the link below, as well as being available from the College website. Printed copies can be obtained from Mr Shrive on request.

From 2019 Nhill College will no longer be using the SkoolBag app. This means all notifications and absent notes will happen within Compass. We encourage parents to logon to Compass to approve any absences your child may have, or to lodge an absence in advance if the dates and times are known. The following is a reminder from the Compass FAQ Sheet that went home with all students last year. The FAQ Sheet can also be found on our website.
How do I submit an absence note?
If using a computer, go to https://nhillcollege-vic.compass.education/ then view the student’s profile, select “Attendance” and then go to “Notes/Approvals”. Click on “Add Attendance Note” to submit a note via Compass.
If you are using the app, go to the student’s profile, “Approvals” tab, and then click the plus button to add a note. You can submit notes ahead of time if you know your child will be absent in the future.
From 2019 parents will be able to complete bus notes on our website at http://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/. This will not require the app to access. Alternatively, parents will be able to ring the College or email nhill.co@edumail.vic.gov.au

Hindmarsh Shire Council and West Wimmera Health Services are working together to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week in 2019. To be held from 16 to 24 March 2019, the theme for this year is ‘Proud to Belong - Your Story, Your Generation’.
As a way of celebrating multiculturalism and diversity, we extend an invitation to members of the community to share your story on multicultural heritage and identity.
This program will be delivered in a similar method to the highly successful and well received ‘Faces of Hindmarsh’ project.
Cultural Diversity Week is a fantastic way to celebrate the everyday diversity of Victorians and reflect on what gives us all a sense of belonging in our multicultural community. At least 29 different nationalities currently reside in Hindmarsh Shire, within Victoria almost half of Victorians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas.
If you, or someone you know would like to share their story please contact Michelle Farinha, Community Development Officer at community@hindmarsh.vic.gov.au or 5391 4444 prior to Sunday 3 March 2019.
